Questionnaire data about criminal victimization experiences were collected from 2,259 Sacramento-area lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (N = 1,170 women, 1,089 men). In nearly 2,000 intercourses 14 different types of condoms were tested by 80 heterosexual and seven homosexual volunteer couples. Information obtained from clinical experiences of the University of Minnesota Youth and AIDS Project (YAP), a primary AIDS prevention program for gay and bisexual males ages 14-21, is described. More than 300 YAP clients have been interviewed regarding sexual behavior, suicide attempts, drug use, and experiences in disclosing their homosexuality to peers and parents during their high school years. A retrospective chart review of 127 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) was undertaken to determine the rate of requests for psychiatric consultation. Thirty-six patients (28.3%) had received psychiatric consultations. This is similar to the rate of consultations seen in other studies. Patients who were not intravenous (iv) drug abusers were more likely to be seen for mood disturbances; iv drug users were more likely to be seen for behavior disturbances. The implications of these findings for future demands on consultation-liaison services for AIDS patients are discussed.

We reviewed published and unpublished studies on seroprevalence of HIV antibody in persons attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in the United States from 1985 through 1987. We identified 23 studies from 16 states; nine studies determined risk factors for HIV. Overall, 899 (4.2%) of the 21,352 clinic attendees were seropositive; the seroprevalence rate was higher for men (5.9%) than for women (1.7%). Most studies of the spread of HIV infection have centred on homosexuals and intravenous drug users.
