Nephrin is a 180-200-kDa transmembrane protein of the immunoglobulin superfamily. In the kidney, nephrin localizes to the slit diaphragm (SD) between interdigitating podocyte foot processes and mutations in the nephrin gene cause congenital nephrotic syndrome. In addition to this rare genetic disorder, recent reports indicate that nephrin is more generally involved in the pathogenesis of glomerular disease. A monoclonal antibody (MAb) capable of detecting the gliadin in wheat flour has been developed. By immunoblot, the monoclonal antibody recognized three bands in the membranes after electrophoresis in an SDS PAGE of the alcohol-soluble proteins of wheat, and only one band in the alcohol extract of the oat flour. ELISA technique can be applied using this monoclonal antibody in the detection of gliadin and avenin in samples from wheat or triticale. The characterization of the antibody shows that it is an IgM class. Sensitivity by ELISA to the gliadin was 80 ng/ml.

We have generated a panel of IgG monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) directed against Borrelia burgdorferi strain B31 antigens, using a method whereby mice were primed with organisms naturally inoculated by Ixodes scapularis nymphal ticks. Western blot analysis showed that these MAbs recognized several B. burgdorferi B31 antigens, including the complement inhibitor factor H-binding proteins ErpA/I/N and ErpC. The molecular pathogenesis of schistosomal liver fibrosis has been studied in a murine model of Schistosoma mansoni. A novel fibroblast growth factor, fibrosin, was identified as a product of a subpopulation of CD4+ lymphocytes resident in the hepatic egg granulomas. The disialoganglioside GD3 is expressed on the surface of soft tissue sarcoma, malignant melanoma, and other malignant cells and is, therefore, a potential target for therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Intravenously administered R24, a murine IgG3 monoclonal antibody to GD3, induces inflammation and tumor regression at sites of metastatic malignant melanoma. R24 5 mg/m2 was given intravenously every other day for six doses to 10 patients with pulmonary metastases from a primary soft tissue sarcoma of the extremity for whom thoracotomy was planned.
