Treatment of nicotine dependence.

Drug and nondrug interventions used in treating nicotine dependence are reviewed. Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in t … l, follow-up visits to review progress, self-help approaches, group counseling, filtration devices, hypnosis, and acupuncture. The efficacy of these approaches ranges from substantial to almost nil. The only pharmacologic agent with FDA-approved labeling for use in smoking-cessation therapy is nicotine. When used in conjunction with appropriate nonpharmaco …

Improving Outpatient Psychotherapy for Adults With Major Depressive and Anxiety Disorders Using Web-Based High-Frequency Monitoring and Feedback in Autosystemic Hypnotherapy: Protocol for a Two-Arm ABAB Crossed-Therapist Randomized Clinical Implementation Trial.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, routine outcome monitoring has been increasingly complemented by routine process monitoring in psychotherapy and other health care settings. Various approaches to therapy feedback exist, differing in assessment frequency, integration into the therapeutic process, and degree of personalization. In this study, we will use a procedure of high-frequency assessment through daily self-ratings, a standard process questionnaire, alongside a personalized questionnaire derived from case formulation, and frequent feedback interviews using visual diagrams to mirror the ongoing

Treatment of pediatric abdominal pain: what is the evidence?

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal pain disorders (APDs), including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional abdominal pain - not otherwise specified (FAP), are highly prevalent in children and significantly impact quality of life. This review highlights advances addressing the need for standardized, evidence-based management in this population. AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the first evidence-based treatment guidelines for pediatric IBS and FAP, developed jointly by the European and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. The recommendations wer

[CLINICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CORRELATIONS IN FIBROMYALGIA PATIENTS].

The features of clinical symptoms, neurotic disorders and the level of subjective control were studied in patients with fibromyalgia. The analysis of relationship between the level of subjective control and neurotic symptoms (asthenia, depression, anxiety, hypochondria) depending the severity of main clinical manifestations of the disease was carried out. It was found that high intensity of fatigue, muscle pain, stiffness, insomnia, and an increase in the number of diagnostic tender points contribute to the formation of inverse correlation between the level of subjective control and neurotic d

The wounded self: new approach to understanding and treating anxiety disorders.

This article synthesizes the concept of "wounded self" in the understanding and psychological treatment of anxiety disorders. The focal point of this concept is the notion of self-wounds or early unresolved emotional injuries. According to this conceptualization, anxiety represents an unconscious fear of unbearable insult to the wounded self, which is protected by maladaptive conscious strategies such as avoidance, cognitive distortions, or emotional constriction. This perspective provides a theoretical basis for blending elements of psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and experiential thera

Psychosocial treatments in pain management of sickle cell disease.

The principal symptom of sickle cell disease (SCD) is pain. Many studies have been conducted on pain management strategies for this illness. There is recognition that psychosocial factors influence clinical disease outcomes; therefore, more attention is being provided to behavioral interventions that address psychosocial problems. This review examines the psychosocial interventions that have been researched for children and adults with SCD, the limitations of these studies, and barriers to implementing the treatments. The intervention receiving the most empirical support was cognitive-behavior

Hypnotizability and outcome in brief psychotherapy.

The relationship between hypnotizability and clinical improvement following brief psychotherapy was investigated. Prior to treatment 32 patients were assessed for hypnotizability utilizing an objective standardized measure of hypnotizability. Measures of psychopathology were obtained at the conclusion of ten sessions and six months post-treatment. A positive relationship was found between outcome and hypnotizability. This was most pronounced at the conclusion of ten sessions. Use of hypnotic techniques as a therapeutic adjunct did not necessarily lead to greater therapeutic effects. Different

Effect of chronic exposure to cadmium on hepatic drug metabolism.

In an attempt to examine the chronic effect of low levels of cadmium on hepatic drug-metabolizing enzyme system, an experiment was carried out in which growing male rats were given 0, 5, 10, and 20 ppm of cadmium in drinking water for a period of 8 weeks. An ip administration of a hypnotic dose of pentobarbital to the cadmium-treated and the control rats 24 hr following the termination of the experiment exhibited that there was no significant difference in the drug metabolism in control and any of the treated groups. Next, liver microsomes were isolated from animals in all groups to study thei

Association between pyramidal neurone spiking in the medial prefrontal cortex and the sedative potency of volatile anaesthetics in mice.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying volatile anaesthetic-induced unconsciousness remain unclear. Glutamatergic pyramidal neurones and fast-spiking interneurones in cerebral cortex circuits play distinct roles in cortical network dynamics under volatile anaesthesia. We investigated the roles of medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pyramidal and fast-spiking interneurones in volatile anaesthetic-induced hypnosis. METHODS: The electrophysiological properties of pyramidal and fast-spiking parvalbumin (PV+) neurones were explored by in vivo multichannel recordings and in vitro patch-clamp electrophys…
