Hypomelanosis of Ito (HOI) is a multisystem neurocutaneous disorder. In the described cases, cutaneous manifestations (unilateral or bilateral streaks and swirls of hypomelanosis with regular and confluent borders) and extracutaneous abnormalities are often associated. Extracutaneous abnormalities involve the musculoskeletal system (scoliosis, vertebral anomalies, cranial-facial malformations) and other organs, as well as the central nervous system (CNS). The most significant anomalies of the CNS are psychomotor retardation and cognitive deficit. Autism, epilepsy, language disorders, cerebral

Hair pigmentation and graying are important topics for the understanding of the physiology of aging; the differentiation of stem cells; and the mechanisms underlying disease processes such as progeroid syndromes, vitiligo, and hypothyroidism. Although hair graying, or canities, is a common process occurring in people as they age, an unknown percentage of individuals experience premature graying from familial inheritance or pathologic conditions. We review the physiology of hair pigmentation and the mechanism underlying physiologic graying, and we explore the etiology of pathologic causes of pr

Hereditary leukonychia (porcelain nails or white nails) is a rare nail disorder with an unknown genetic basis. To identify variants in a gene underlying this phenotype, we identified four families of Pakistani origin showing features of hereditary leukonychia. All 20 nails of each affected individual were chalky and white in appearance, consistent with total leukonychia, with no other cutaneous, appendageal, or systemic findings. By using Affymetrix 10K chip, we established linkage to chromosome 3p21.3-p22 with a LOD score (Z) of 5.1. We identified pathogenic mutations in PLCD1 in all four fam

A 10-year-old boy had multiple papules after surgery on a primary lesion on his left ear. The papules were pink and showed a linear arrangement around the helix. Histopathological examination of two separate lesions showed proliferation of epithelioid cells in the dermis and some of them formed nests. No melanin was found in the epithelioid cells, and immunohistochemistry staining with S100, HMB45 and Melan-A were positive in the neoplasm cells. According to the clinical and histopathological characteristics, it was diagnosed as hypopigmented Spitz nevi with linear arrangement after trauma.

We hereby report a 2-year-old boy who presented with a peculiar combination of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented skin lesions along the lines of Blaschko, sharply demarcated at the midline, both on the anterior and posterior trunk. Although combinations of hyperpigmented and hypopigmented skin lesions distributed along the lines of Blaschko have been described, the combination of skin lesion comprised hypomelanosis of Ito and whorled hypermelanosis distributed in the extremely unusual manner described in this patient has not been reported previously.

Waardenburg syndrome (WS) is a rare disease characterized by sensorineural deafness in association with pigmentary anomalies and defects of neural-crest-derived tissues. Depending on additional symptoms, WS is classified into four types, WS1, WS2, WS3 and WS4. WS1 and WS3 are attributed to mutations in PAX3, whereas WS2 is heterogeneous, being caused by mutations in the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor gene in some but not all affected families. WS4 is attributed to mutations in the endothelin-3 or the endothelin-B receptor genes and SOX10 gene. WS1 is an auditory-pigmentary diso

Chemical peeling remains a valuable tool for the cosmetic surgeon to treat photoaging skin. Choices available include superficial, medium, and deep chemical peeling agents along with preparatory cosmoceutical agents to prep the skin and maintain rejuvenation. This article will prepare the cosmetic surgeon to include the latest agents in his practice and correctly choose which treatment is best for patients with individual problems of photoaging of the face and body, acne scars, and pigmentary problems. These modalities will be compared with other treatment modalities, such as laser and dermabr

Other than transient hypopigmentation, no side effects occurred. In one case there is still no evidence of recurrence 6 years after a trial treatment was conducted. In the same patient, clinical success was histologically confirmed.

BACKGROUND: Hypopigmented macules have been described infrequently as a presenting form of mycosis fungoides (MF).
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to clarify general characteristics of a hypopigmented MF variant.
METHODS: Seven new cases were investigated with the use of descriptive epidemiology techniques. Demographic parameters, histopathology, and treatment outcomes were analyzed. These data were combined with those from prior reports to develop a broad composite view of this disease process.
RESULTS: The median ages in our series were 36 years for disease onset and 39 years at biopsy

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic cutaneous manifestation of lupus that may occur independently or precede systemic disease. Vu … d continuation of immunosuppressive therapy with clinical improvement and residual postinflammatory hypopigmentation. This case highlights the importance of considering lupus-related disease in the differential diagnosis of atypical vulvar lesions and underscores the role of biopsy in establishing an accurate diagnosis.

We report a case of a 29-year-old woman with subtle partial erythematous, partial hyperpigmented streaks along the Blaschko's lines on the right side of the body since early childhood. Primary DNA results of the skin and blood assay diagnosed focal dermal hypoplasia in mosaic form. The postzygotic mutation in the PORCN gene was only detectable in the affected skin and not in the blood assay. This article illustrates that clinically very discrete hypopigmentation and poikiloderma along Blaschko lines should raise awareness for robust diagnostic analysis in order to recognize this variable multi…
