Dysfunctional decision-making in pathological gambling: pattern specificity and the role of impulsivity.

Dysfunctional decision-making in individuals with pathological gambling (PGs) may result from dominating reward-driven processes, indicated … ling Task (CGT) to assess decision-making. The delay discounting paradigm (DDP) as well as the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (measuring urgency, premeditation, perseverance and sensation seeking) were administered as multidimensional measures of impulsivity. Results revealed that (1) PGs exhibited higher risk seeking and an immediate reward focus in the CGT and, in …

CSF testosterone: relationship to aggression, impulsivity, and venturesomeness in adult males with personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Studies of various species suggest that testosterone, assayed in various compartments, is correlated with aggression and possibly related behaviors. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between cerebrospinal fluid testosterone (CSF TEST) and measures of aggression, impulsivity, and venturesomeness in male personality disordered subjects and test the hypothesis that CSF TEST would correlate directly with each measure in this group. METHODS: Lumbar CSF for morning basal levels of testosterone were obtained from 31 male subjects with personality disorder. Aggress

[Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Clinical and treatment aspects].

Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a complex disorder. The onset of the disease is in childhood. The most important symptoms of ADHD are hyperactive, impulsive and inattention symptoms. In addition, children with this syndrome often have difficulties with other aspects of their learning, emotional modulation, organization, motivation, memory and other functions of the brain's management system. Drug medications, behavioral treatment and behavioral interventions at school are the most important aspects of treatment for ADHD syndrome.

The Role of Sleep and the Effects of Sleep Loss on Cognitive, Affective, and Behavioral Processes.

Sleep is essential for various cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes, including attention, memory, executive function, emotional regulation, and interpersonal interactions. Sleep disruptions undermine these functions, resulting in measurable impairments in daily activities, occupational performance, and public safety. Adequate sleep supports sustained vigilance and concentration, whereas sleep deprivation is associated with attentional lapses, diminished cognitive control, and impaired sensory processing. Memory consolidation, which depends on both non-rapid eye movement (NREM) and ra

Intronic Variant in CNTNAP2 Gene in a Boy With Remarkable Conduct Disorder, Minor Facial Features, Mild Intellectual Disability, and Seizures.

Introduction: Mutations in the contactin-associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) gene (MIM#604569) encoding for CASPR2, a cell adhesion protein of the neurexin family, are known to be associated with autism, intellectual disability, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. A set of intronic deletions of CNTNAP2 gene has also been suggested to have a causative role in individuals with a wide phenotypic spectrum, including Pitt-Hopkins syndrome, cortical dysplasia-focal epilepsy syndrome, Tourette syndrome, language dysfunction, and abnormal behavioral manifestations. Case presentation: A 10-years-old

Dyskinesias and impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease: From pathogenesis to potential therapeutic approaches.

Dopaminergic treatment in Parkinson's disease (PD) reduces the severity of motor symptoms of the disease. However, its chronic use is associated with disabling motor and behavioral side effects, among which levodopa-induced dyskinesias (LID) and impulse control disorders (ICD) are the most common. The underlying mechanisms and pathological substrate of these dopaminergic complications are not fully understood. Recently, the refinement of imaging techniques and the study of the genetics and molecular bases of LID and ICD indicate that, although different, they could share some features. In addi

White problem gamblers discount delayed rewards less steeply than their African American and Hispanic counterparts.

Impulsivity is a core process underlying addictive behaviors, including nonpharmacological addictive behaviors such as problem gambling. Although considerable attention has been given to the investigation of delay discounting within the context of addiction-related behaviors, relatively little research has examined the relationship between discounting and individual variables, such as race/ethnicity. The purpose of this study was to compare discounting rates in the three most prevalent racial/ethnic groups in the United States: Whites, African Americans, and Hispanics. The study was conducted

Self-reported negative attentional bias is associated with smartphone addiction among male flight cadets: chain mediation by impulsivity and anxiety.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread use of smartphones, smartphone addiction has become a prominent mental health issue Negative attentional bias, a stable cognitive trait, is closely linked to addictive behaviors. Drawing on cognitive resource theory and emotional regulation theory, self-reported negative attentional bias may be linked to increased impulsivity via cognitive resource depletion and heightened anxiety through amplified negative perceptions, with these associations potentially forming a chain pathway related to smartphone addiction. However, the specific mechanism remains unclear. M

Prevalence of Distress Associated With Difficulty Controlling Sexual Urges, Feelings, and Behaviors in the United States.

IMPORTANCE: The veracity, nomenclature, and conceptualizations of sex addiction, out-of-control sexual behavior, hypersexual behavior, and impulsive or compulsive sexual behavior are widely debated. Despite such variation in conceptualization, all models concur on the prominent feature: failing to control one's sexual feelings and behaviors in a way that causes substantial distress and/or impairment in functioning. However, the prevalence of the issue in the United States is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of distress and impairment associated with difficulty controlling sexual f

Mitochondrial protein associated neurodegeneration - case report.

Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a group of genetic disorders with a progressive extrapyramidal syndrome and excessive iron deposition in the brain, particularly in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra. We present the case of a 31-year-old woman with mitochondrial protein associated neurodegeneration (MPAN). MPAN is a new identified subtype of NBIA, caused by mutations in C19orf12 gene. The typical features are speech and gait disturbances, dystonia, parkinsonism and pyramidal signs. Common are psychiatric symptoms such as impulsive or compulsive behavior, depressio

FOOD ADDICTION AS A PROXY FOR ANOREXIA NERVOSA SEVERITY: NEW DATA BASED ON THE YALE FOOD ADDICTION SCALE 2.0.

The contribution of an addictive process to anorexia nervosa (AN) is an area of growing interest. Yet, little is known about how the food addiction concept (FA) may be of interest in understanding AN. This study investigates prevalence of FA diagnostic and its association with markers of severity in individuals with AN. We conducted a retrospective study in a sample of 73 patients with AN. We assessed FA with the Yale Food Addiction Scale 2.0, depressive and anxiety disorders, impulsivity (Beck Depression Inventory, STAI, BIS-11) and eating behavior (BITE, EDE-Q). Prevalence of FA in our sampl

Cognitive aspects of hyperactivity and overactivity in preadolescents with tourette syndrome.

Attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD) is a common comorbidity in children with Tourette syndrome (TS). However, motor restlessness and high levels of sensorimotor activation or "overactivity" may be a feature of TS rather than a distinct ADHD comorbidity. The link between overactivity and ADHD in TS has yet to be established and in particular between adult and preadolescent manifestations. The current study furthers this understanding of ADHD features in TS by investigating the relationship between cognitive and behavioral aspects of ADHD and TS. The style of planning (STOP) ove
