[Chlamydia infections and pelviscopic findings].

Contact infections by chlamydia trachomatis have been observed more frequently in the last years, may be by better isolation methods. 1985 in all pelviscopies a cervical swab and cul-de-sac secretion have been examined using immunofluorescent test for chlamydia. In non selected 80 patients a positive cervical test could be found in 11 cases (13.8 per cent). In cul-de-sac secretions only 3 cases (3.8 per cent) in result was positive. We saw wide spread adhesions near the adnexa, which could be the reason of sterility, in 3 chlamydia positive cases and in 6 chlamydia negative cases. Results of c…

Synergistic aerobic and anaerobic infections.

Encapsulation affects the virulence and survival of anaerobic bacteria and their protection from phagocytosis. More encapsulated Bacteroides strains and anaerobic and facultative gram-positive cocci are isolated from patients with clinical infections than from healthy people. The pathogenicity of Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Clostridium, and cocci isolates was demonstrated by their ability to induce subcutaneous abscesses in mice. Encapsulated Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, and cocci isolates generally induced abscesses, whereas nonencapsulated organisms did not. When strains that had fewer than 1…

[Urogenital and anal papillomavirus infections].

Recently virologists and clinicians have focused attention on infections with human papillomaviruses (HPV). This is due to the ubiquity, the increasing frequency and the possible association of these viruses with the development of squamous cell carcinomas of the skin and of the mucous membranes of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary and anorectal tracts. HPV represent a very heterogeneous group of DNA tumor viruses. By means of molecular-biological techniques, more than 40 HPV types have been recognized. In the urogenital and anal tract, papillomaviruses have been associated with…

Infections in sickle cell disease.

Bacterial infections are considered a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients, particularly children, with sickle cell disease. Infections including pneumonia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, pyelonephritis and general sepsis are more prevalent in patients with these genetic abnormalities than in normal individuals. Generally, infections are more prevalent in children than in older patients. The most common cause of severe infections in hemoglobinopathies include Diplococcus, Staphylococcus, Pneumococcus, Salmonella and Streptococcus. Several investigations have been conducted to determi…

Computed tomography of cervical infections.

Computed tomography of 31 patients with infections of the face and neck was reviewed and correlated with the clinical and surgical results. Computed tomography was found to be valuable for (a) distinguishing cellulitis from abscess, (b) defining the precise location and extent of complex infections, (c) demonstrating secondary complications, and (d) occasionally suggesting the etiology of infection. Based on this review, we concluded that CT provides important diagnostic information that aids clinical assessment and guides medical and surgical management of cervical infections. The anatomic re…

[LAV virus infections in children].

The clinical signs and immunological abnormalities in ten babies with lymphadenopathy associated virus infections (LAV) are described. We have made this diagnosis based on the association of specific immunological abnormalities, serological tests or the positive isolation of the virus. In one very severe case, whose mother died of AIDS, the serology and attempts to isolate the virus were both negative. Excluding the two post-transfusion cases, the ethnic and familial history always suggested the diagnosis. The clinical characteristics were very close to those in adults, being hepatosplenomegal…

Triggering infections in reactive arthritis.

Certain microbes like yersinia, salmonella, shigella, campylobacter, chlamydia, and possibly gonococcus can trigger reactive arthritis especially in patients of the HLA-B27 type. In the present study we have used serological and culture methods to identify the probable triggering infection in 50 consecutive HLA-B27 positive patients diagnosed as having reactive arthritis. The two most common triggering agents thus identified were Yersinia enterocolitica (12 patients) and Chlamydia trachomatis (11 patients). In addition six patients had high antistreptolysin O titres and two high teichoic acid

Viral infections in atopic dermatitis.

In a study of almost 1000 patients with past or present atopic dermatitis (AD) it was found that histories of recurrent (greater than 5 episodes/year) cold sores and upper respiratory infections, as well as histories of zoster were significantly more common in AD patients than in non-atopic controls. Serological studies revealed that AD patients have clearly elevated titers of antibodies against Epstein-Barr virus. These findings suggest that the increased susceptibility to viral infections in AD is due to immune dysfunction rather than to cutaneous alterations which are associated with the di…
