Early childhood insomnia phenotypes and temperament: a theoretical review with clinical implications for precision assessment and treatment.

PURPOSE: This theoretical review examines the clinical heterogeneity of early childhood insomnia and proposes a phenotype-based framework that integrates temperament into assessment and treatment planning in infants and preschool children (approximately 0-5 years). We focus on three clinically relevant presentations: (1) motor restlessness with fragmented sleep, (2) prolonged early-morning awakenings, and (3) sleep-maintenance insomnia with repeated awakenings frequently amplified by somatic triggers such as allergic symptoms. METHODS: We conducted a targeted PubMed/MEDLINE search for English

Win-Concurrent Sensory Cues Can Promote Riskier Choice.

Reward-related stimuli can potently influence behavior; for example, exposure to drug-paired cues can trigger drug use and relapse in people with addictions. Psychological mechanisms that generate such outcomes likely include cue-induced cravings and attentional biases. Recent animal data suggest another candidate mechanism: reward-paired cues can enhance risky decision making, yet whether this translates to humans is unknown. Here, we examined whether sensory reward-paired cues alter decision making under uncertainty and risk, as measured respectively by the Iowa Gambling Task and a two-choic

Using Google Trends to Predict Dengue Outbreaks in Pakistan: A Time-Series and Causality Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dengue fever is a significant public health issue in Pakistan. Seasonal outbreaks lead to considerable illness and economic strain. Traditional surveillance systems, like the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) system, depend mainly on passive reporting. They often identify outbreaks only after transmission has already worsened. Digital data sources, such as Google Trends, might provide early signs of increasing disease activity by reflecting changes in public information-seeking behavior. OBJECTIVE: To determine if Google search activity for dengue-related terms c

Knowledge, attitudes, and practices on anthrax in selected game management areas in Zambia.

In this study, we investigated anthrax, a zoonotic disease, at the human-wildlife-livestock interface in Zambia, focusing on Simalaha Conservancy, Blue Lagoon, and Lochinvar National Parks. These areas represent key points where illegal wildlife trade and anthrax risk coexist. Although anthrax remains endemic in Zambia, there is limited data on community knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) related to anthrax transmission and the role of wildlife trade value chains in its spread and maintenance. Therefore, we examined how these community KAPs influence anthrax transmission through the il

Cannabidiol and brain function: current knowledge and future perspectives.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in Cannabis sativa, commonly known as cannabis or hemp. Although currently available CBD products do not meet the safety standards of most food safety authorities to be approved as a dietary supplement or food additive, CBD has been gaining widespread attention in recent years due to its various potential health benefits. While primarily known for its therapeutic effects in managing epileptic seizures, psychosis, anxiety, (neuropathic) pain, and inflammation, CBD's influence on brain function has also piqued the inte

Obesity is associated with altered mid-insula functional connectivity to limbic regions underlying appetitive responses to foods.

Obesity is fundamentally a disorder of energy balance. In obese individuals, more energy is consumed than is expended, leading to excessive weight gain through the accumulation of adipose tissue. Complications arising from obesity, including cardiovascular disease, elevated peripheral inflammation, and the development of Type II diabetes, make obesity one of the leading preventable causes of morbidity and mortality. Thus, it is of paramount importance to both individual and public health that we understand the neural circuitry underlying the behavioral regulation of energy balance. To this end

A Peer Support Specialist-Delivered Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program for Women in Substance Use Treatment: Protocol for a Single-Arm Trial.

BACKGROUND: Women in substance use treatment are disproportionately affected by violence. Both a history of violence and substance use place women at risk for cumulative exposure to violence and adverse outcomes, including mental and physical health problems. Interventions are urgently needed to reduce these health disparities by preventing initial and repeated exposure to sexual and intimate partner violence among women with substance use disorders (SUDs). The Healthy Relationships and Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) program adapts evidence-based strategies for this population and i

Measuring the Burden of Infodemics: Summary of the Methods and Results of the Fifth WHO Infodemic Management Conference.

BACKGROUND: An infodemic is excess information, including false or misleading information, that spreads in digital and physical environments during a public health emergency. The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an unprecedented global infodemic that has led to confusion about the benefits of medical and public health interventions, with substantial impact on risk-taking and health-seeking behaviors, eroding trust in health authorities and compromising the effectiveness of public health responses and policies. Standardized measures are needed to quantify the harmful impacts of the inf

Identification of child maltreatment using prospective and self-report methodologies: a comparison of maltreatment incidence and relation to later psychopathology.

OBJECTIVES: One of the greatest methodological problems in the study of childhood maltreatment is the discrepancy in methods by which cases of child maltreatment are identified. The current study compared incidents of maltreatment identified prospectively, retrospectively, or through a combination of both methods. METHOD: Within a cohort of 170 participants followed from birth to age 19, incidents of maltreatment which occurred prior to age 17.5 were identified via prospective case review and interviewer ratings of retrospective self-reports. Multi-informant measures of behavior problems were

High- and Low-Calorie Food Cues, Visual Attention, and Subclinical Eating Pathology in University Students Assessed by Eye Tracking.

Background/Objectives: Eating disorders are increasingly conceptualized as information-processing disorders characterized by attentional biases toward food-related stimuli. However, whether such biases are already detectable in subclinical, non-treatment-seeking populations remains unclear. This study examined whether subclinical eating pathology, assessed with the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), is associated with distinct patterns of visual attention toward high- and low-calorie food images in university students. Methods: In this cross-sectional observational study featuring an experimen
