Gastric and oesophageal afferent inputs to vagal efferent fibres were investigated in Urethane anaesthetized ferrets. Mechanical, chemical, and pharmacological stimuli were tested and efferent activity recorded from single cervical vagal fibres. Fibres showed either no basal discharge or low frequency, irregular patterns of resting discharge; only those which showed > 50% excitation or inhibition of basal activity with both gastric distension and oesophageal balloon distension were studied further. These responses were rapid and maintained only for the duration of the stimuli. 18/32 efferent f

Transient vagal bradycardia occurring during coronary arteriography (CA) immediately following intracoronary injection of ionic contrast medium is believed to be a component of the von Bezold-Jarisch reflex (BJ). Data obtained from experimental animals using buspirone (BSP) and other 5-HT1A receptor ligands suggest that these serotonergic receptors modulate the excitability of cardiac vagal motoneurones (CVM). This is a preliminary investigation of the possible effects of BSP in altering the bradycardia of patients submitted to CA for diagnostic purposes. Patients were divided into two age- an

The effect of angiotensin II (Ang II) infusion on the doses of ouabain required to induce ventricular arrhythmias and death was investigated in anesthetized dogs. Tritiated ouabain was infused alone i.v. (1 microgram/kg per min) to establish the control toxic doses and the level of ouabain in the heart at death. When Ang II and ouabain were co-infused i.v. the doses of ouabain needed to induce arrhythmias and death were significantly reduced. Spinal transections performed at C-1 prior to drug infusions prevented the effect of Ang II to enhance the toxicity of ouabain. Thus, the action of Ang I

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord infarction is a rare but serious neurologic complication of spinal anesthesia. Direct vessel injury, intra-arterial anesthetic injection, and anesthetic-induced local hypotension are potential mechanisms of infarction during this procedure. The proximity of the artery of Adamkiewicz to the spinal levels used for spinal anesthesia may also play a role. This case of unilateral anterior spinal artery syndrome highlights the potential for an atypical pattern of injury and deficits due to the complexity of the spinal cord's anterior circulation.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Octreotide is suggested to harden the pancreas, thus facilitating the construction of a pancreatic anastomosis and lowering the risk of postoperative fistula. We tested the hypothesis that intra-arterial application of octreotide in the gastroduodenal artery during pancreatectomy may increase pancreatic hardness.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A single-center, prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial with parallel assignment was conducted. Patients planned for a pancreatoduodenectomy or a total pancreatectomy, who had a palpatory and durometer proven (<40 Shore uni

Radiolabeled microsphere techniques were used to measure renal blood flow (RBF) in rabbit kidneys with 14- to 16-day-old experimentally induced renal tumors. VX-2 carcinoma cells (25 microliters) harvested from carrier animal intramuscular tumors were injected supraselectively into an intralobar artery using fluoroscopically guided transcatheter techniques. Within 2 to 3 weeks, all animals developed localized 10 to 25 mm diameter renal tumors. Renal blood flow was calculated after left ventricular injection of 113Sn-labeled 15 mu diameter microspheres. Blood flow (ml/minute) in tumor-bearing k

BACKGROUND: Intracarotid drug delivery in rodents is important for investigating neurological disorders and evaluating intra-arterial therapies. However, existing carotid catheterization tools are limited by large catheter size, complicated preparation, catheter instability, vascular injury, and catheter-related mortality, particularly in mice.
NEW METHOD: We developed a simple, cost-effective carotid artery catheterization device for rats and mice. The device consists of ultra-fine polypropylene tubing, a 34 G needle, tissue-biocompatible adhesive, and a 1-mL syringe, and is compatible with

Ischemic spinal cord injury remains a major complication of both open and endovascular repairs of extensive lesions of the thoracic or thoracoabdominal aorta. Patients undergoing endovascular treatment cannot benefit from direct revascularization of the Adamkiewicz artery (AA). Primary revascularization of the intercostal artery (ICA) giving rise to the AA using the internal mammary artery (IMA) could ensure uninterrupted flow in the AA even if the origin of the feeding ICA was obstructed. The purpose of this study was to assess the anatomical feasibility of revascularization of the ICA giving

Transcranial color-coded duplex sonography (TCCD), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), and computed tomography angiography (CTA) are novel noninvasive or minimally invasive techniques for the study of the intracranial circulation. TCCD is relatively inexpensive and permits bedside examination. It improves the accuracy and reliability of conventional transcranial Doppler studies. The main limitation of TCCD are the ultrasonic windows. They restrict the area of insonation to the major cerebral arteries and the proximal part of its branches, lower the spatial resolution, and may prevent transte

L-carvone is a natural monoterpene found in spearmint and other foods that can be administered intravenously to euthanize rats. We hypothesized intravenous L-carvone rapidly alters consciousness and produces death in sheep, resulting in tissue L-carvone concentrations that are commonly found in foods. Jugular catheters were placed in five adult Hampshire-Suffolk ewes, and a carotid arterial catheter was inadvertently placed in a sixth ewe. Animals were restrained in a seated position and instrumented with surface electroencephalographic (EEG) and electromyographic electrodes and a two-lead ele

A large number of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) will have large and/or multiple inoperable tumours, precluding percutaneous ablation, such as percutaneous ethanol, acetic acid or hot saline injection, and radiofrequency ablation. Similarly, if the tumour is not accessible percutaneously or the tumour is subcapsular or subdiaphragmatic, percutaneous therapy is ruled out. Many patients will also have associated portal vein thrombosis, making them unsuitable for chemoembolisation, depending upon the level and severity of thrombosis. Such patients can be offered internal radioisotop

BACKGROUND: The no/slow reflow phenomenon during primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) causes the destruction of the coronary microcirculation and further myocardial damage. Some studies have shown that intracoronary nitroprusside infusion is a safe and effective method for managing the no/slow reflow phenomenon. However, it is uncertain whether the injection of nitroprusside at a specific time point during PPCI can most effectively prevent no-reflow. In this study, we investigated the effect of the timing of an intracoronary nitroprusside injection on flow recovery during PPCI in

Awareness of deficits is often impaired following disruption of the right hemisphere. Intracarotid anesthetic procedures (IAPs) represent a unique method by which we can assess functioning of each hemisphere in isolation. We used this technique to explore deficits of awareness of specific functions-motor ability, naming, and comprehension-in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Some patients were injected with amobarbital, whereas others were injected with etomidate. We found that injection into the right hemisphere, or epileptogenic focus in the right hemisphere following injection in the le

We examined an aqueous extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyces extracts (HSE) by close-arterial injection on micturition thresholds (MTs) and on uterine contractions (rate and amplitude). Five doses of HSE were examined (1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg) in 3 groups of rats: controls, after bladder inflammation, and after bilateral hypogastric neurectomy. In some rats, uterine contractions were induced by injection of oxytocin (OT) and the effect of HSE was compared with that of nifedipine. HSE increased MTs in a dose-dependent manner in all groups. Neither atropine (0.1 mg/kg) nor propranolol (0.4

Giant tumors of the chest are rare. These tumors comprise a spectrum of disease from benign lesions to highly aggressive malignant tumors with cells of origin in the pleura, pulmonary parenchyma, blood vessels, thymus, and connective tissues. We report four cases of giant tumors of the thorax treated with preoperative arterial embolization followed by complete surgical resection. Their diagnostic and treatment courses, imaging, and pathology are described.

PURPOSE: Despite detailed knowledge of the effects of X-ray contrast media on cardiac function, no studies have examined the effect of contrast media injections on the subsequent tolerance to ischemia in the heart.
METHODS: Isolated perfused rat hearts were exposed to repetitive injections of iohexol, iodixanol, or ioxaglate before 30 min of global ischemia and 120 min of reperfusion. These groups were compared with control (no pretreatment) and ischemic preconditioning known to reduce infarct size. Physiologic variables and infarct size were measured

OBJECTIVE: This single-center, prospective, randomized, double-blind phase IV study in parallel-group design was carried out to investigate whether either of two different x-ray contrast media (iomeprol 350 or iopentol 350) injected into the axillary artery has any influence on cutaneous microcirculation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The investigation was carried out on two groups of patients (n = 10 in each group) who had to undergo a diagnostic heart catheter angiography. The confirmatory response variable for the study was the mean capillary erythrocyte velocity (mm/sec). Blood flow through the ip

A simple two-compartment model was used to study the effects of water exchange on the signal produced by an inversion recovery prepared rapid gradient-echo sequence during the first passage of a low dose of an intravascular contrast agent. Water exchange at intermediate rates of exchange (1-10 Hz) between the vascular and extravascular spaces caused the form of the signal changes during the first pass to be dependent on both the fractional sizes of the vascular and extravascular compartments and on the exchange rate. Unless the effects of exchange are minimized by using a very short inversion

Injection anaesthesia is commonly used in laboratory mice; however, a disadvantage is that post-anaesthesia recovery phases are long. Here, we investigated the potential for shortening the recovery phase after injection anaesthesia with fentanyl-midazolam-medetomidine by antagonization with naloxone-flumazenil-atipamezole. In order to monitor side-effects, the depth of anaesthesia, heart rate (HR), core body temperature (BT) and concentration of blood gases, as well as reflex responses, were assessed during a 50 min anaesthesia. Mice were allowed to recover from the anaesthesia in their home c
