UNLABELLED: Previous studies suggest that Paneth cells are involved in NEC development. Defensin alpha 6 (DEFA6) and guanylate cyclase activator 2A (GUCA2A) are selective protein markers of Paneth cells. In sacral anoplasty, it is frequently found that an outer layer of the rectal wall, which resembles the structure of the taenia bands of the colon, limits the elasticity of the rectum making it different from the small intestine, hence preventing the rectal stump from being advanced to reach the perineum. Situs inversus in association with duodenal atresia is very rare. A high index of suspicion coupled with appropriate evaluation is necessary for diagnosis and operative planning. We report a case of a 5-day-old who presented with duodenal atresia associated with polysplenia and situs inversus with a review of the medical literature.

Results of reconstruction of gastroschisis are presented. 27 consecutive patients operated upon during 1971 - 1980 are reviewed: 8 patients with primary closure, 19 patients reconstructed with a staged procedure (silon-pouch). It is concluded that both methods can be used, with low mortality: 1 patient in each group. The use of silon-pouch resulted, however, in a longer period of total parenteral nutrition (46 vs 18 days) and hospital care (8 vs 43 days).

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prognostic criteria of early fetal megacystis.
DESIGN: A prospective, transvaginal ultrasound, cross-sectional study at 11-15 weeks of gestation at a tertiary referral fetal medicine unit.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Sixteen pregnancies out of a total of 5240 were identified with early fetal megacystis. Fetal biometry, morphology, amniotic fluid, bladder size and volume were also evaluated.
