[Ameboma of the large intestine and rectum].

Amoeboma was diagnosed in three patients: a Bengal seaman aged 40 and two Dutch citizens who had lived in the tropics, a man aged 41 and a woman aged 56. The first-mentioned patient had a rectal tumour easily inspected by sigmoidoscopy; a biopsy sample contained Entamoeba histolytica. The faeces contained no cysts. The two other patients had coecal amoebomas. They had been operated elsewhere on suspicion of appendicitis and had been treated with metronidazole, which had failed to eliminate the amoebae. The faeces still contained cysts. One patient had trophozoites in a biopsy sample. The serum

Intestinal obstruction complicating pregnancy.

Intestinal obstruction is a rare but serious complication of pregnancy with significant maternal and fetal mortality. The reported incidence of intestinal obstruction complicating pregnancy varies widely, from 1 in 66,431 to 1 in 1,500 deliveries. A retrospective review of 66 cases of intestinal obstruction complicating pregnancy and the puerperium, including 2 cases from our institution, revealed that the most common causes of mechanical obstruction were adhesions (58%), volvulus (24%), and intussusception (5%). Seventy-seven percent of the patients with obstruction due to adhesions had under

Chronic intestinal lymphocytic microphlebitis.

The authors report two cases of a peculiar microphlebitis of the intestines, similar to that described by Saraga and Costa quite recently [5]. The patients had undergone hemicolectomy because of evolving ileus caused by cecal polyps or lipohyperplasia, respectively. Pseudomembranous-ulcerative inflammation of the cecum and variously intense lymphocytic infiltrates of numerous small submucosal veins and venules of the intestines were found in both cases. Thrombosis occurred very rarely in the affected vessels, although sometimes it was found in deeper and larger veins. Arteries, lymphatics, mes…

[Intestinal dysmotility-pseudo-obstruction].

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction is defined as a syndrome related to any process which affects intestinal regulation and propulsion. Its origin may be muscular, neurogenic or hormonal, excluding Hirschsprung's disease or any known mechanical obstruction. Between 1989 and 1991, 11 patients with intestinal pseudo-obstruction were studied at our centre, and included nine hyperganglionisms B, and two hypoganglionisms) and two visceral myopathies (Berdon's syndrome). Diagnosis was established in all cases by histologic study. The techniques of haematoxylin-eosin, acetylcholinesterase, enolase,

Intestinal trichobezoar with perforation in a child.

A 4-year-old girl presented with a history and examination results suggestive of peritonitis. Exploration of abdomen was done with suspicion of enteric perforation, which showed long ileal trichobezoar with perforation of .5-cm diameter. The stomach was devoid to any fragment of bezoar. There was no history of hair eating and nervous habits.

Small intestinal cytochromes P450.

Small intestinal cytochromes P450 (P450) provide the principal, initial source of biotransformation of ingested xenobiotics. The consequences of such biotransformation are detoxification by facilitating excretion, or toxification by bioactivation. P450s occur at highest concentrations in the duodenum, near the pylorus, and at decreasing concentrations distally--being lowest in the ileum. Highest concentrations occur from midvillus to villous tip, with little or none occurring in the crypts of Lieberkuehn. Microsomal P4503A, 2C8-10, and 2D6 forms have been identified in human small intestine, a

[Intestinal permeability disorders in children].

The intestinal mucosa has a certain degree of "porosity", which allows some molecules and macromolecules that are not subject to active transport, to cross the intestinal wall and enter the blood circulation. This permeability of the intestinal mucosa, which depends mostly on the size of the molecule and the state of the mucosa, can be studied with the assistance of protein macromolecules in an allergy-immunological investigation, or with inert markers, so permitting evaluation of the state of integrity of the small intestine. The markers used are polyethylene glycols (PEG) of various molecula

[Preventive operations in intestinal abnormalities].

In intestinal anomalies, preventive surgical procedures include gastrostomies and enterostomies as well as some special operations such as ligature of the cardia and associated appendectomies. General indications for enterostomies are seen in life-threatening circumstances, i.e. prematurity, surfactant deficiency, major associated malformations and complications. Preventive surgical procedures are necessary in certain cases of esophageal atresia, complicated small bowel atresia, meconium ileus, anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, neuronal intestinal dysplasia and necrotizing enteroc

[A fatal case of intestinal balantidiasis].

A fatal case of a 63-year-old pig-raising country woman with an eight-day course of nausea, vomiting, dysentery with intestinal bleeding the latter being the direct cause of death. The autopsy showed ulcerative colitis due to B. coli, which was easily observed on histological examination of the large bowel.

Surgery of the bovine small intestine.

Cattle require surgery for small-intestinal problems less frequently than they do for abomasal, forestomach, or large-intestinal problems. Close attention to local vascular anatomy is critical to success when intestinal resection is required. Cows with signs of severe abdominal pain may make rapid recoveries following prompt surgical treatment. This article discusses relevant anatomy of the small intestine and the diagnosis and treatment of intussusception, volvulus, obstruction by incarceration or entrapment, and duodenal obstruction.

Surgery of the bovine large intestine.

Cecal dilatation and volvulus are common entities in dairy cattle, whereas cecal torsion is not often encountered. These diseases have been related to excessive volatile fatty acid production. Obstruction of the remainder of the large colon may be simple or strangulating in nature. These obstructions are relatively rare. Clinical signs, surgical management, and surgical complications of diseases of the cecum and large intestine are discussed.

[Gallstone-induced intestinal obstruction].

Six patients with gallstone ileus were under observation. The diagnosis was not established before the operation. Surgery was undertaken for acute ileus without identification of the cause. Stones in the intestinal lumen were an unexpected operative finding. The operation of choice was a minimal intervention for the restoration of intestinal continuity (enterolithotomy, resection of the intestine whenever necessary). Five patients recovered, one died.

Symptoms and transmission of intestinal cryptosporidiosis.

Cryptosporidium spp are a cause of diarrhoea in toddlers. Symptoms and routes of transmission were investigated in a prospective case-control study in the city and surroundings of Basel, Switzerland. Twenty one (4.6%) out of 455 children with diarrhoea who attended paediatric and general practices from June to September 1988 were positive for cryptosporidium. The mothers of each case, of two controls with diarrhoea of another origin, and of two healthy controls were interviewed with a standardised questionnaire. In comparison with controls with diarrhoea of another origin, respiratory symptoms

[The differential diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis].

Differential diagnosis of intestinal amebiasis (106 patients), acute Flexner's dysentery (105 patients) and nonspecific ulcerative colitis (31 patients) based on the clinical data and rectoromanoscopic findings is described. Rapidly and gradually progressing in the first 7 days intestinal amebiasis is characterized by a gradual onset, normal t0 with mounting general weakness, celiectasia, diarrhea with hyaloid mucus, focal catarrh-hemorrhagic changes and appearance of individual oval transversal ulcers on the colon mucosa.
