Identification of ultra-rare genetic variants in pediatric acute onset neuropsychiatric syndrome (PANS) by exome and whole genome sequencing.

Abrupt onset of severe neuropsychiatric symptoms including obsessive-compulsive disorder, tics, anxiety, mood swings, irritability, and restricted eating is described in children with Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). Symptom onset is often temporally associated with infections, suggesting an underlying autoimmune/autoinflammatory etiology, although direct evidence is often lacking. The pathological mechanisms are likely heterogeneous, but we hypothesize convergence on one or more biological pathways. Consequently, we conducted whole exome sequencing (WES) on a U.S. cohor

Clinical withdrawal symptom profile of synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists and comparison of effects with high potency cannabis.

Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) may be used as an alternative to natural cannabis; however, they may carry a greater risk of problematic use and withdrawal. This study aimed to characterise the withdrawal symptom profile of SCRAs and compare their profile of effect with high-potency herbal cannabis. Global Drug Survey data (2015 and 2016) were used to access a clinically relevant sample of people reporting use of SCRAs >10 times in the past 12-months, a previous SCRA quit attempt, and lifetime use of high-potency herbal cannabis. Participants completed an 11-item SCRA withdrawa

Aggressiveness, violence, homicidality, homicide, and Lyme disease.

BACKGROUND: No study has previously analyzed aggressiveness, homicide, and Lyme disease (LD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective LD chart reviews analyzed aggressiveness, compared 50 homicidal with 50 non-homicidal patients, and analyzed homicides. RESULTS: Most aggression with LD was impulsive, sometimes provoked by intrusive symptoms, sensory stimulation or frustration and was invariably bizarre and senseless. About 9.6% of LD patients were homicidal with the average diagnosis delay of 9 years. Postinfection findings associated with homicidality that separated from the non-homicidal grou

A pooled MADRS/IDS cross-correlation analysis: clinician and patient self-report assessment of improvement in core depressive symptoms with adjunctive aripiprazole.

BACKGROUND: These analyses aimed to examine the pattern of improvement in depression symptoms with adjunctive aripiprazole. METHODS: Data were pooled (724 subjects: n = 356 placebo, n = 368 aripiprazole) from 2 double-blind, 6-week aripiprazole studies. Pearson correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between changes on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) line items and selected Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) line items using last observation carried forward. The magnitude of change was expressed as a between-group effect size (ES). RESULTS: At end point,

New-Onset Manic-Spectrum Symptoms Temporally Associated With Co-amoxiclav Exposure: A Case Report.

Antibiotics have been associated with a range of neuropsychiatric adverse effects, including manic-spectrum symptoms. However, such side effects are uncommon, and the mechanisms underlying these presentations remain uncertain.  A 62-year-old female with no previous psychiatric history developed manic-spectrum symptoms shortly after receiving co-amoxiclav for a suspected dental infection. Approximately two days after initiation of treatment, she developed marked anxiety, reduced sleep, irritability, restlessness, racing thoughts, increased speech, an elevated mood, and paranoid ideas. Symptoms

Bidirectional temporal relationships between emotional state and eating across eating disorders: a network approach.

OBJECTIVE: Several models of eating disorders (EDs) suggest that emotions and eating influence each other in a vicious cycle, producing part of the observed symptoms. However, no research tested whether such cycles exist across EDs. We therefore explored networks of prospective relationships between negative and positive emotions and eating-related behaviors (hunger, food craving, calorie intake, and binges) across EDs and healthy controls (HCs). METHOD: These variables were assessed six times a day for eight days in women with restrictive (AN-R, N = 29) and binge-purge (AN-BP, N = 26) Anorex

Internet Use Scale for Emotional Distress Avoidance in Adolescents (IU-EDA): Development, Psychometric Validation, and Predictive Validity of Problematic Internet Use.

This study introduces and validates the Internet Use Scale for Emotional Distress Avoidance in Adolescents (IU-EDA), designed to assess the tendency to use the Internet as a coping strategy for negative emotional states. A total of 764 adolescents (51.8% boys; aged 11-17, mean age: 13.32 years) from ten Spanish municipalities participated across two samples. The IU-EDA was developed following theoretical models of Problematic Internet Use (PIU) and use to avoid emotional distress in adolescents. Items were developed from literature and validated via the Delphi technique. Analyses included desc

Long COVID in Children and Adolescents: Mechanisms, Symptoms, and Long-Term Impact on Health-A Comprehensive Review.

Long COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), is increasingly recognized as a condition affecting not only adults but also children and adolescents. While children often experience milder acute COVID-19 symptoms compared to adults, some develop persistent physical, psychological, and neurological symptoms lasting for weeks or months after initial infection. The most commonly reported symptoms include debilitating fatigue, respiratory issues, headaches, muscle pain, gastrointestinal disturbances, and cognitive difficulties, which significantly impact daily activi

Network analysis of depression-anxiety symptoms and their association with sexualized substance use among Chinese men who have sex with men: A multi-center study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high comorbidity of depression and anxiety among men who have sex with men (MSM), the dynamic interplay between specific symptoms and their association with high-risk behaviors remains poorly understood. This study employed network analysis to examine symptom interactions and their relationship with Sexualized Substance Use (SSU) among Chinese MSM. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2403 MSM across six metropolitan regions in China (October 2023-March 2024). Participants completed validated Chinese versions of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) an

The application of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques to reduce anger and violence proneness: Results of a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Since the 1990s, there has been a rise in the number of publications assessing the effects of applying non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) to treat patients with drug-resistant depression. This involves applying magnetic fields or electrical currents to the surface of the skull to influence the superficial neurons in the cerebral cortex. Due to the evidence regarding symptom reduction in these types of patients, such as irritability or hostility, there was a rise in the use of this technique to reduce negative mood, including anger state. This decrease in anger state could also help reduce o

MCC950 Attenuates Microglial NLRP3-Mediated Chronic Neuroinflammation and Memory Impairment in a Rat Model of Repeated Low-Level Blast Exposure.

Blast-induced traumatic brain injury is typically regarded as a signature medical concern for military personnel who are exposed to explosive devices in active combat zones. However, soldiers as well as law enforcement personnel may be repeatedly exposed to low-level blasts during training sessions with heavy weaponries as part of combat readiness. Service personnel who sustain neurotrauma from repeated low-level blast (rLLB) exposure do not display overt pathological symptoms immediately but rather develop mild symptoms including cognitive impairments, attention deficits, mood changes, irrita

A prospective study of transdiagnostic psychiatric symptoms associated with burnout and functional difficulties in COVID-19 frontline healthcare workers.

OBJECTIVE: Frontline healthcare workers (FHCWs) responding to the COVID-19 pandemic develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) symptoms. Such symptoms are associated with burnout, occupational and relational difficulties. In the current study, we examined the prospective association between acute transdiagnostic COVID-19-related PTSD, MDD, and GAD symptoms at pandemic outset, and burnout and functional difficulties several months later in FHCWs in New York City. METHODS: Wave 1 symptoms of COVID-19-related PTSD, MDD, an

[Premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder].

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is one of the most common problems for women of reproductive age. The physical, mental and behavioural symptoms recur during the luteal phase of the cycle in daily life and cause a deterioration in the quality of life, affecting the patient's social, work and family relationships. Symptoms typically disappear spontaneously within a few days after the onset of menstruation. The onset and severity of PMS are determined by the cyclical functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis and the combined presence of other physiological (e.g., chronobiological and cir
