BACKGROUND: Meckel-Gruber syndrome (MKS) is a lethal rare inherited autosomal recessive disease. The syndrome is characterized by multiple congenital anomalies including polycystic kidneys, occipital encephalocele and polydactyly. The presence of two out of these anomalies is sufficient for a definitive diagnosis. At least 11 genes have been reported to-date to underlie MKS.
METHODS: In the current study we have retrospectively analyzed all the families at the Ha'Emek Medical Center in which the diagnosis of MKS was determined.

We have extended our previous 10-year follow-up study of MMT retention for another 5 years and added data on survival of all patients ever admitted to our MMT clinic (6/1993 to 6/2007). Data were calculated from admission to MMT until leaving, death, or study closure (6/2008). Ninety-four of a total of 613 patients (4711.6 person-years [py]) died. Cancer was the primary cause of death for those who remained in treatment, and overdose for those who left MMT. This study compares rates of health counseling for women in the United States and Israel and identifies factors affecting counseling rates, based on a weighted sample of 2,257 US and 848 Israeli women. In both countries, fewer than half of the women reported speaking with a physician about any of a set of preventive counseling topics (e.g., smoking, diet, exercise) during the year preceding the survey. A survey of the drug susceptibilities of gonococcal isolates from 100 consecutive patients attending clinics in the Tel Aviv area of Israel during the period from February to September 2000 has shown a 61% rate of ciprofloxacin resistance (MICs, > or =1 microg/ml); 51 isolates were highly resistant (MICs, > or =4 microg/ml). Forty-three children with nonrhabdomyosarcomatous soft tissue sarcomas (NRSTS) were treated at the Northern Israel Oncology Center in Haifa, Israel, from 1971 to 1996. In this 1 year cross-sectional study of personnel being discharged from compulsory military service, an available database of health-related information was used to examine the association of meningococcal carriage with socio-demographic factors.
