Burn Injuries Associated with At-Home Hair Braiding.

Hair braiding that incorporates synthetic extensions has increased in popularity across all age groups. As part of the styling process, the ends of the braid are commonly dipped in scalding water; an increasing number of patients have presented to our center after containers of recently boiled water are accidentally tipped over and spilled onto patients. A retrospective chart review was performed of all patients who sustained burn injuries related to at-home hair braiding presenting to an ABA-verified burn center between January 1, 2006 and July 31, 2020. A total of 41 patients presented over

Musculoskeletal screening as a predictor of seasonal injury in elite Olympic class sailors.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate seasonal injury incidence and musculoskeletal screening as a predictor of injury in elite Olympic class sailors. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: A 12-month analysis of injury surveillance data was performed for elite Australian sailors (age=16-30 years, N=22). Pre-season musculoskeletal screening (incorporating mobility, stability and neural tests) and seasonal injury data were analysed for predictive relationships, and associations between potential predictor variables and injury status. RESULTS: Injuries requiring medical attention occurred at a rate

Atypical tibial tuberosity fracture in an adolescent.

Avulsion fractures of the tibial tuberosity are typically sustained by adolescent males during sporting activities. Tibial tuberosity avulsions with simultaneous proximal tibial epiphyseal fractures are rare injuries. We present an unusual case of Ogden type IIIA avulsion fracture of tibial tuberosity with a Salter Harris type IV posterior fracture of proximal tibial epiphysis in a 13-year-old boy. We believe that the patient sustained the tibial tuberosity avulsion during the take-off phase of a jump while playing basketball due to sudden violent contraction of the quadriceps as the knee was

Degloving Injury of the Lower Extremity: Report of Two Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our article is to highlight the importance of the immediate treatment of lower extremity degloving injuries, in order to prevent complications. CASES PRESENTATION: Here we present two cases of degloving injury of the lower extremity, both resulting from motorway accidents. The first one concerned a 65-year-old man suffering from multiple limb fractures and a degloving injury of the right thigh, which was immediately treated with extensive debridement and primary full-thickness skin graft re-approximation. The second case involved a 63-year-old woman who presented with ce

Treatment of a paediatric patient with a distal lower extremity traumatic wound using a dermal regeneration template and NPWT.

Degloving injuries are common in trauma and represent a spectrum of complex wounds, the management of which may be highly challenging especially in the paediatric population. In severe injuries leading to wounds reaching tendon and bone, vascularity is compromised precluding traditional wound management, and sometimes necessitating amputation. This report highlights the use of a dermal regeneration template combined with vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) in the treatment of complex traumatic degloving wounds. Here, we present a case of a five-year-old boy who sustained a high-energy shear injury t

Congenital Insensitivity to Pain with Anhidrosis (HSAN Type IV), Extremely Rare Syndrome that Can Be Easily Missed by Bone and Joint Surgeons: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis is an extremely rare disorder in which injuries can often be missed by patient, parents and even by orthopedic surgeon. Pain and tenderness, on which a trauma team so much depends to make a clinical diagnosis and to decide whether to go for radiological evaluation can be misleading in this rare syndrome. So complete clinical examination still forms the corner stone to avoid misdiagnosis and pick up the rare disorders. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 5 year old girl child, who was brought to us as a case of one and a half month old n

A case of foot drop as an expression of brain metastases?

Foot drop can be defined as a significant weakness in ankle and toe dorsiflexion. Injury to the dorsiflexors or to any point along the neural pathways that supply these muscles can result in a foot drop. Injury to the peroneal nerve is usually the major precipitant. Other causes vary from trauma to surgical nerve injury, as well as leg compartment syndromes or dorsiflexor injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, stroke, neuropathies, drug toxicities, spinal stenosis, L5 sciaticas, systemic diseases such as connective tissue diseases, vasculidities, or diabetes. This report focuses on a patient pre

Team physician #4. Avulsion fracture of the distal tibial epiphysis in skeletally immature athletes (juvenile Tillaux fracture).

Adolescent athletic injuries are special in that they differ from those of the skeletally mature athlete in several respects. The physis is weaker than the ligaments, so that the typical mechanism of injury, which might be expected to result in a syndesmosis sprain of the ankle in adults with subsequent tearing of the ligaments, frequently causes an epiphyseal avulsion in children. The potential for leg length discrepancy and growth aberrations exists only if a significant amount of growth remains in the unfused epiphysis. The juvenile Tillaux fracture of the anterolateral distal tibial epiphy

Rugby league ball carrier injuries: The relative importance of tackle characteristics during the European Super League.

Rugby league carries a high injury incidence with 61% of injuries occurring at tackles. The ball carrier has a higher injury incidence than the defender, therefore understanding mechanisms occurring during injurious tackles are important. Given the dynamic, open nature of tackling, characteristics influencing tackle outcome likely encompass complex networks of dependencies. This study aims to identify important classifying characteristics of the tackle related to ball carrier injurious and non-injurious events in rugby league and identify the characteristics capability to correctly classify th

Is the Frequency of a Targeted Neuromuscular Training Program a Factor in Modifying Knee Joint Loading During Typical Netball Landing Tasks?

BACKGROUND: Unplanned sidestep cutting and forward single-leg jump-landing contribute to non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in netball. Neuromuscular training programs (NMTPs) have shown promising results in reducing injury risk in certain populations when compliance is high. Compliance is easier to achieve when NMTPs are effective yet require minimal time for completion. HYPOTHESIS: Once- and thrice-weekly intervention groups would be equally effective in reducing knee abduction and internal rotation moments during forward single-leg jump landing and unplanned sidestep cut

Effect of deep oscillation as a recovery method after fatiguing soccer training: A randomized cross-over study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: In soccer the recovery time between matches is often not long enough for complete restoration. Insufficient recovery can result in reduced performance and a higher risk of injuries. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of Deep Oscillation (DO) as a recovery method. METHODS: In a randomized crossover study including 8 male soccer players (22 ± 3.3 years) the following parameters were evaluated directly before and 48 h after a fatiguing soccer-specific exercise: Maximum isokinetic strength of the leg and hip extensors and flexors (Con-Trex® Leg Press, Ph

Injury, illness, and mental health problems during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Our study aimed to describe the patterns and characteristics of injuries and illnesses incurred during the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 (FWWC2023). Team medical personnel recorded all injuries, illnesses, and mental health problems requiring medical attention, plus match, and training exposure into a centralised FIFA database using recent consensus-based methodology. Of the 32 teams at FWWC2023, 26 teams participated in the study, including 536 of 742 players. A total of 161 medical-attention injuries (incidence rate (IR): 14.2 per 1000 h [95% CI: 12.1 to 16.6]) and 59 time-loss injuries (IR: 5

Association between frontal plane knee control and lower extremity injuries: a prospective study on young team sport athletes.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Poor frontal plane knee control can manifest as increased dynamic knee valgus during athletic tasks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between frontal plane knee control and the risk of acute lower extremity injuries. In addition, we wanted to study if the single-leg squat (SLS) test can be used as a screening tool to identify athletes with an increased injury risk. METHODS: A total of 306 basketball and floorball players participated in the baseline SLS test and a 12-month injury registration follow-up. Acute lower extremity time-loss injuries were

The relationship between postural stability and dancer's past and future lower-limb injuries.

In an effort to address dance-related injuries, screening programs are typically employed to assess injury susceptibility. The aim of this study was to explore for potential links between postural stability and dancers' previous lower-limb injuries and susceptibility to future lower-limb injuries. Eighty-five contemporary dance students were recruited at a UK dance conservatoire. Information concerning previous injuries was collected by self-report survey. The participants completed two balance tasks, one static and one dynamic, performed on a RS Scan Footscan pressure pad to calculate postura

Epidemiology of lower extremity injuries among U.S. high school athletes.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the health benefits of organized sports, high school athletes are at risk for lower extremity sports-related injuries (LESRIs). The authors documented the epidemiology of LESRIs among U.S. high school athletes. METHODS: Via two-stage sampling, 100 U.S. high schools were randomly selected. During the 2005 school year, LESRIs in nine sports were reported: boys' baseball, football, and wrestling; girls' softball and volleyball; and boys' and girls' basketball and soccer. The authors calculated rates as the ratio of LESRIs to the number of athlete exposures. National estimates
