[Use of nasolabial flap for mouth floor reconstruction].

SUBJECT: Oral cavity cancers represent 30% of the cephalic extremity tumors. Their resection requires in the majority of the cases a reconstruction by soft tissue. The reconstruction must be simple by bringing some reliable, hairless, thin, resistant tissue to radiation therapy, with a limited morbidity and an acceptable scar ransom. PURPOSE: The purpose of our study is to define the place and the limits of nasolabial flap in the reconstruction of the anterior floor of the mouth after tumoral resection compared to the other surgical and microsurgical techniques. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retro

Head and Neck Cancer Incidence, Mortality, and Disability-Adjusted Life Years From 1990 to 2021-A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the global burden of head and neck cancers, analyzing incidence, mortality, and DALYs from 1990 to 2021, across age groups and regions with varying SDI levels. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database (1990-2021) was utilized to examine incidence, mortality, and DALYs for head and neck cancers. Regional disease trends were analyzed using age-standardized rates (ASR), estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), Joinpoint regression, and the Age-Period-Cohort model. A global map depicted disease burden across 204 countries and t

Expression of Rb, pRb2/p130, p53, and p16 proteins in malignant melanoma of oral mucosa.

We previously reported that pRb2/p130 gene, one of the Rb family members, was immunohistochemically abundantly expressed in well-differentiated oral squamous cell carcinomas, whereas in undifferentiated ones the expression was low. Oral malignant melanoma is extremely rare, however the prognosis is poor because it tends to locally invade tissue or metastasize and its biological behavior appears to be different from cutaneous malignant melanoma. The present study dealt with the expression of pRb2/p130, Rb, p53, and p16 in 13 cases of malignant melanoma of oral mucosa as revealed by immunohistoc

Versatility and Reliability of Islanded Pedicled Nasolabial Flap in Head and Neck Cancer Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction of head and neck cancer ablative defects is challenging. A modification of the nasolabial flap (islanded pedicled nasolabial flap [ipNLF]) is an easy and reliable option for reconstruction of small- to medium-sized defects of the head and neck, especially in resource-constrained and high-volume centers. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We present the retrospective analysis of 27 consecutive patients reconstructed with ipNLF at two high-volume cancer centers, Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Varanasi, India; and Army Hospital Research and Referral, New Delhi, India. The functio

A Rare Case of Hydrocystoma of the Labial Commissure: Histopathology and Clinical Picture.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocystomas (HCs) are rare, benign, skin adnexal cystic tumors that may be either eccrine or apocrine. BACKGROUND DATA: Apocrine-HCs are cystic lesions that arise from the apocrine secretory coil, whereas eccrine-HCs are retention cysts of the eccrine duct. The commonest site is around the eyes, on the ears, scalp, chest, shoulders, or feet; HCs of the oral cavity are very rare. METHODS: The case is reported of a 36-year-old man with a nodular lesion that was 7 × 5 mm in size on the labial commissure. The lesion was treated in direct contact with a diode laser that was 980 nm in

A Huge Fetal Sacrococcygeal Teratoma with a Vascular Disruption Sequence.

Fetal sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCTs) occur in one to two per 20 000 pregnancies that cause high-output cardiac failure. High-output cardiac failure leads to polyhydramnios, hydrops, intrauterine fetal demise and preterm birth. Vascular disruption defects refer to those involving the interruption or destruction of some part of the fetal vasculature. We present a rare case of huge SCT causing multiple fetal disruption defects like cleft lip and palate and limb anomalies besides hydrops.

Pericallosal lipoma associated with Pai syndrome: prenatal imaging findings.

Pai syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the association of a midline pericallosal lipoma, median cleft (palate or lip) and cutaneous polyps of the face. Only seven cases have been reported in the medical literature and we are not aware of any previously reported prenatally detected cases. In this article, we present the prenatal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging findings of a syndromic pericallosal lipoma with associated anomalies that led to the prenatal diagnosis of Pai syndrome. We underline the impact on parental counseling following prenatal detection of pericallosal lipo

Use of the radial forearm flap for deep, central, midfacial defects.

Six cases that required soft-tissue replacement in the central midface are presented. The greatest number of flaps were used for large defects in patients with cleft palates who had undergone multiple previous operations. Several were for palatal defects attributable to cocaine abuse, and one was used for lining in a nasal reconstruction. There were no flap losses and, on the basis of these experiences, it is concluded that this is an excellent method for providing soft tissue in these difficult situations.

Factors related to advanced stage oral squamous cell carcinoma in southern Thailand.

A critical factor that indicates a poor prognosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is advanced stage disease. This study, therefore, aimed to identify the factors related to advanced stage (TNM staging III, IV) OSCC in Thailand. There were 161 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and lip (ICD-9 140, 141, 143-5), included in the study. Sixty-two per cent of the patients presented with advanced stage disease. Information on demographic characteristics, risk habits, health-seeking behaviour prior to health care professional (HCP) consultation, tumour characteristics and

Incidence trends and projections of lip and oral cavity cancer in China 1990-2021: an age-period-cohort and decomposition analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the historical trends, underlying causes, and future projections of lip and oral cavity cancer (LOCC) incidence in China. METHODS: Annual cases and age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) for LOCC in China from 1990 to 2021 were extracted from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 study. Age-Period-Cohort (APC) models were employed to assess the effects of age, period, and cohort. Bayesian APC models were applied to project future incidence trends, and decomposition analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing incidence. RESULT: From 1990 to 2021, the ca

Cosmetic and Functional Outcomes of Second Intention Healing for Mohs Defects of the Lips.

BACKGROUND: The lips are a common location for skin cancer and thus for Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS). There are few studies looking at second intention healing of Mohs defects of the lips, and none have used a scar assessment scale. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the acceptability of second intention healing of the vermilion lips following MMS using a patient questionnaire and the Patient and Observer Assessment Scale (POSAS). METHODS: Eligible patients were found through chart review. A patient questionnaire and the patient scale of the POSAS were performed over the phone. For patients who were

Tumor location predicts survival in cutaneous head and neck melanoma.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies documented poorer outcomes in patients with cutaneous head and neck melanoma (CHNM) relative to those with melanoma at other sites. We evaluated survival differences attributable to tumor location in patients with CHNM. METHODS: We queried the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for patients undergoing surgery for CHNM from 1988 to 2006, excluding patients without biopsy-proven diagnoses, those diagnosed at autopsy, and patients with distant metastases. Using the Kaplan-Meier method, we assessed patient, tumor, and treatment-specific factors o
