An 8-year follow-up of a juvenile ossifying fibroma in the left mandible of a 4-year-old boy is presented. The case demonstrated initial lack of radiological evidence of demarcation and subsequent eccentric enlargement, selective tooth displacement and a multilocular appearance in areas of active growth. An aneurysmal bone cyst and a decrease in the bone content was present in the excision specimen.

A case of vitamin D resistant hypophosphatemic osteomalacia associated with osteosarcoma of the mandible is presented. The patient complained of lumbar, knee and foot pain and muscle weakness of two years' duration. Serum phosphorous was 1.0-1.6 mg/dl, tubular reabsorption of phosphorus was 47 to 58%, TmPO4/GFR was o.7-1.2 mg/dl. Aminoaciduria was noted. Bone biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of osteomalacia. He partially responded to the treatment with 1 alpha()H) D3 and sodium phosphate. After removal of sarcoma of the mandible, symptoms remitted and pertinent laboratory data became normal exce

Partial mandibulectomy done for en bloc resection of oral or oropharyngeal cancer often produces a characteristic deviation of the chin toward the resected side. This results in esthetic, masticatory, and speech disabilities. The Joe Hall Morris biphase external pin fixation appliance was used in 20 patients, with excellent results in preventing such complications. In 12 to 14 weeks it maintained excellent stability of the remaining mandibular segments, which prevented muscle and scar contracture. None of the patients required bone grafting or other reconstructive surgery. The appliances also

A case report with simultaneous occurrence of neurofibromatosis, incomplete branchial arch syndromes, a branchial cleft cyst and a pseudocyst in connection with a vascular hamartoma anterior to the right ear of a 38-year-old woman is presented. A possible common pathogenesis of the vascular hamartoma and the incomplete branchial arch syndromes as well as that of the neurofibromatosis is suggested. The pseudocyst is interpreted as a branchial cleft cyst showing inflammatory changes due to a pharyngitis shortly before the preauricular tumor appeared.

Odontogenic myxoma (OM) is a benign tumor originating from odontogenic ectomesenchyme. While this tumor displays imaging variability, the sunburst appearance is uncommon and can resemble malignant lesions. In this report, we present two cases of OM exhibiting an imaging sunburst appearance, besides a literature review. A 35-year-old woman and a 21-year-old woman presented with mandibular swelling. Imaging exams revealed extensive radiolucent/hypodense images, with the presence of a sunburst periosteal reaction. The main diagnostic hypothesis for both cases was osteosarcoma. Incisional biopsies

BACKGROUND: Osteosarcoma of the jaws is a rare primary malignant tumor of bone. The clinical, radiological and histopathological features of a case associated with cemento-osseous dysplasia is presented.
CASE REPORT: A 57-year-old mixed-race female presented with a large, progressive, swelling of the right mandible. Radiographic examination revealed two associated lesions. Partially defined irregular radiopacities were noted in the left mandible, extending from the premolar to the molar region. The lesion had a cotton-wool appearance and resembled a fibro-osseous lesion; i.e. cemento-osseous

PURPOSE: Segmental mandibulectomy (SM) is a morbid procedure, often indicated in the treatment of oral cavity pathology; however, the effect on quality of life resulting from resection of specific mandibular subsites has not previously been investigated. This study's primary aim was to evaluate differences in Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among patients who underwent segmental mandibulectomy with condylectomy (SMc+) or not (SMc-), and secondarily among patients who underwent SM with symphyseal resection (SMs+) or not (SMs-).
METHODS: A single-centre cross-sectional study was performe

PURPOSE: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible represents a severe, debilitating complication of radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer (HNC). At present, no normal tissue complication probability (NTCP) models for risk of ORN exist. The aim of this study was to develop a multivariable clinical/dose-based NTCP model for the prediction of ORN any grade (ORNI-IV) and grade IV (ORNIV) after RT (±chemotherapy) in patients with HNC.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Included patients with HNC were treated with (chemo-)RT between 2005 and 2015. Mandible bone radiation dose-volume parameters and cl

RATIONALE: Currently, digital surgical techniques have been widely used in the precise treatment of mandibular resection and reconstruction with fibula flaps. Utilizing these innovative techniques in surgical planning and hardware fabrication before surgery has shown to provide great help. However, it is difficult for even experienced surgeons to place the preformed reconstruction plate in the same position as its preoperative design, causing surgical results to differ from preoperative planning. This study aims to solve these acknowledged challenges by creating newly designed equipment.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) is a fibro-osseous lesion or non-odontogenic tumour that affects craniofacial bones. These lesions are included in the spectrum of fibro-osseous lesions arising from periodontal ligament cells, which can deposit combination of cementum and bone surrounded by fibrous tissue. It clinically, macroscopically and radiologically resembles complex composite odontome and can be differentiated only on the basis of histopathology. They usually occur solitarily as a painless and expansile spherical or ovoid jawbone mass that may displace the roots of adjacent teeth. They p

Primary intraosseous squamous cell carcinoma (PIOSCC) is a rare lesion that almost exclusively occurs in the jaws. Most PIOSCCs originate from epithelial lining of odontogenic cysts, especially from radicular, residual, and dentigerous cysts. A few cases have been shown to arise from keratocystic odontogenic tumors (KCOTs). This is a report of a case of PIOSCC that arose from an untreated keratocystic odontogenic tumor within a period of less than 2 years of first diagnosis. Upon malignant transformation, the tumor changed from a cystic to a solid pattern and acquired an infiltrative growth pa

Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) of the mandible is a potentially catastrophic complication of external beam radiation therapy for head and neck malignancies. A 55-year-old man treated with chemoradiation for base-of-tongue cancer presented with a necrotic left mandibular body and underwent left mandibulectomy with right free fibula osteocutaneous flap reconstruction. Two and a half years later, he presented with right mandibular body ORN and underwent a second mandibular resection and subsequent reconstruction with a left fibula osteocutaneous free flap fixed in the midline to the previously placed c

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus on the appropriate management of solitary plasmacytoma (SP) of the jaw. The aim of the present investigation was to provide scientific evidence for the optimal management of this disease through a systematic literature review.
METHODS: The included articles are published in English from 1948 to March 2011 and describe the population affected by SP of the jaw with site, clinical and radiographic features, special findings, initial diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up.
RESULTS: Fifty cases of SP of the jaw were identified. It typically presents as a sing

Benign cementoblastoma (BC) is a relatively rare odontogenic neoplasm characterized by the formation of a mass of cementum-like tissue connected to the root of a tooth. Clinically, BC has a slow and constant growth pattern, frequently accompanied by pain, and it promotes volume expansion on both the vestibular and lingual surfaces. Radiographically, it appears attached to the apical or lateral portion of the root of a tooth root as a densely radiopaque, well-circumscribed mass surrounded by a thick and uniform radiolucent halo. Treatment usually consists of surgical tooth extraction along with

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastoma is a locally aggressive odontogenic tumour of the mandible and maxilla that, if neglected, can cause severe facial disfigurement and functional impairment. A thorough understanding of its clinicopathological behaviour is essential to avoid recurrence associated with inadequately treated disease. Currently, wide resection and immediate reconstruction is the treatment of choice in most cases of mandibular ameloblastoma. We present our experience in the management of this disease and review the current status of the literature.
METHOD: Retrospective review of all patien
