Autogenous bone grafts are commonly used for reconstruction of the deficient maxillary alveolar ridge. Mandibular ramus, symphysis, extraction sites, and retromolar sites are the most common sources for harvesting autogenous bone grafts from intraoral regions. Several authors have used computerized tomography (CT) to evaluate the dimensional change of bone graft, but there are limited reports evaluating donor sites for autogenous bone. In this report, 2 patients were treated with autogenous bone graft from the mandibular symphysis. Postoperative CT scans were used to evaluate the radiographic

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between incisor inclination, Collum angle, and alveolar bone thickness is crucial for accurate orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. This study is one of the first to assess the Collum angle and buccal and lingual bone plate thickness of maxillary and mandibular central incisors with tooth inclination on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 112 CBCT scans of the maxilla and 112 CBCT scans of the mandible were three-dimensionally reconstructed using Ez3D-I version 4.1 software. The Co

This retrospective, cross-sectional study analyzed clinical CT scans from 367 Indian subjects (199 healthy; 168 with TMJ ankylosis) from a tertiary hospital to compare mandibular morphometric parameters between Indian subjects with healthy and ankylosed temporomandibular joints (TMJs) of differing age groups and sex. Furthermore, the study compared mandibular morphometry of the Indian population with that of other countries. Key mandibular parameters, including ramus length and condyle width, were measured from 3D reconstructions. Two-sample z-tests and paired t-tests were used (p < 0.05). Ram

BACKGROUND: Brown tumor is a rare skeletal manifestation of secondary hyperparathyroidism. Although diagnosis of the disease is increasingly seen in early stages due to improved screening techniques, some patients still present in a progressed disease stage. The treatment depends on tumor mass and varies from a conservative approach with supportive parathyroidectomy to extensive surgical resection with subsequent reconstruction.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of extensive mandibular brown tumor in a patient with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus, chronic kidney disease, and secon

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes of total subcondylar excision of mandibular condylar osteochondroma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Two adult patients presented with progressive facial asymmetry, jaw deviation, and limited mouth opening. Computed tomogram (CT) showed a large osseous tumor arising from the right condyle occupying the subtemporal space in these patients. Complete surgical excision was performed without condyle reconstruction. The pathology report indicated osteochondroma. Patients were followed for an average of 5 years.
RESULTS: Long-term evaluation showed restoration of dento-occlusal

Four mandibular screw-plate locking systems were studied in sheep. Three to four centimetres angular continuity resections of the mandible were performed and the defects bridged with pre-bent angular reconstruction plates fixed with four screws in the body part and three in the ramus. Each type was used four times. Clinical and radiological examinations were carried out 1 and 2 months later. All sheep were able to eat and ruminate normally throughout the postoperative period. Radiology revealed that 6/16 plates and 5/112 screws fractured during the follow-up period. In one type, no fracture oc

We describe a procedure for "chain-link" combined tissue transfer connecting the vascular pedicle of a deep circumflex iliac flap with that of a forearm flap after wide resection of the mandible. Combination of these flaps facilitated the reconstruction of the defect in both intra- and extraoral soft tissue and the mandibular bone. This method is useful when cervical recipient blood vessels are limited due to the wide resection of the primary tumor and radical neck dissection.

Central giant cell lesion (CGCL) is a benign intraosseous lesion that usually accompany the gnathic bones in the anterior region, mostly crossing the midline. Its clinical features involve cortical expansion, tooth displacement, and root resorption. Pain may occur in 20% of cases. Histopathological characteristics are like other pathological entities, being necessary discarding them. In this case, a 53-year-old female presented an expansive legion in the anterior mandible with tooth displacement and pain. After incisional biopsy, the result was CGCL. Surgical planning involved manufacturing a

Tumors of the central mandible requiring marginal mandibulectomy and floor of mouth resection require reconstruction for cosmetic and functional purposes. Numerous reconstructive techniques have been described for small-moderate sized defects of the central mandible/anterior floor of mouth. Robust local flaps have been well described; however second stage procedures are required for pedicle division. The split mentalis muscle flap is a simple, quick and low morbidity option for central mandibular defects and has been demonstrated effectively with the use of a split skin graft. We provide a mod

Restoring normal skeletal anatomy in patients with complex trauma to the mandible can be difficult, the difficulty often increasing with an edentulous mandible. This study describes a case of a displaced edentulous bilateral mandibular fracture, which was preoperatively planned with the in-house haptic-assisted surgery planning system (HASP). A model of the virtually restored mandible was 3D-printed at the hospital and a reconstruction plate was outlined beforehand with the printed mandible as a template and served as a guide during surgery. This case suggests HASP as a valuable preoperative t

In conventional reconstruction of the facial skeleton, bone grafts are usually harvested from distant sites such as the ilium or ribs. Because of the morbidity associated with the use of these sites, the calvarium was studied as an alternate donor site. Twenty-three patients underwent bone grafting using autogenous calvarial bone. Reconstructive procedures included alveolar cleft grafts, Le Fort I osteotomies, midface onlay grafts, and grafting of a mandibular continuity defect. Intraoperative and postoperative morbidity associated with the bone donor site was minimal, and there was good incor

Temporomandibular joint replacement (TJR) with alloplastic prosthesis has shown promising long-term results in end stage joint disorders. We present a case of young woman with painful ankylosis that where reconstructed with TJR, due to a complex mandibular fracture with dislocation of the left condyle into the middle cranial fossa two years earlier. At the age of 18 the subject underwent a total joint replacement with custom-made alloplastic TMJ prosthesis. To determine the bone response and remodeling activity around the prosthesis, a F18 PET/CT-scan was used. No sign of increased remodeling

Reconstruction of complex defects involving the maxilla or mandible often requires transfer of free vascularized tissue. In the conventional approach, a flap is transferred to provide vital tissue, and subsequent shaping and debulking are required. The authors present their experience with prefabrication of vascularized fibular flaps. Since 1999, 48 prefabricated flaps have been used to reconstruct 28 maxillary and 20 mandibular defects. The technique involves two surgical steps (prefabrication and flap transfer) and requires accurate planning, done with a solid model of the skull. Correct pos

Surgical treatment of extensive carcinoma of the tongue requires reconsideration at the present time: firstly, because the efficacy of other therapeutic measures is rapidly suppressed by the size of the tumors, and there is not theoretical reason for excluding extensive surgery, and secondly, because esthetic and functional sequelae of these bloody treatments have been totally modified by the introduction of new reconstructive techniques. Based on a series of 16 cases treated during a one-year period, the conditions for surgery of vast malignant tongue tumors (T3, T4, N indifferent) are analyz

Iharkutosuchus makadii is a basal eusuchian crocodylian with multicusped teeth discovered from the Upper Cretaceous of Hungary. Skull and dentition morphology indicates an active food processing for this crocodylian. First among crocodylians, a combination of different analyses, including cranial adductor muscle reconstruction, tooth wear pattern, and enamel microstructure studies, is applied here to support this hypothesis. Data provide unambiguous evidence for significant dental occlusion that was a result of a unique, transverse mandibular movement. Reconstruction of the jaw adductors demon
