An unusual presentation of synovial chondromatosis of the knee in a 10-year-old girl.

Synovial chondromatosis commonly occurs in the anterior compartment of the knee joint, predominantly in middle-aged men. It is relatively unusual in female children and is rarely encountered in the synovium beneath the meniscus. The present report describes a rare case of synovial chondromatosis that developed in the synovium just inferior to both menisci of the right knee in a 10-year-old girl. At this unusual age and location, there is a greater probability of missed diagnosis, due to the lack of definite informative incidence, and difficulty in finding the lesions during arthroscopic examin…

An unusual meniscal ganglion cyst that triggered recurrent hemarthrosis of the knee.

A 58-year-old woman suffered spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis of the knee. In the clinical course, pigmented villonodular synovitis was mostly suspected, but in arthroscopic surgery the lateral meniscus appeared to be upturned and stuck into the lateral pouch with the meniscal ganglion cyst. It was suggested that meniscal tear with meniscal ganglion cyst was related with recurrent hemarthrosis. Generally, both the meniscal ganglion cysts and spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis are highly rare conditions. In this case, we speculated that a negligible power could induce the meniscal tear with r…

Increased Posterior Tibial Slope Is Associated With Increased Risk of Meniscal Root Tears: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: While increased posterior tibial slope (PTS) is an established risk factor for anterior cruciate ligament tears, the association between tibial slope and meniscal posterior root tears is not well-defined. PURPOSE: To summarize the available literature evaluating the association between PTS and meniscus root injuries compared with patients without root tears. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: A literature search was performed using the Scopus, PubMed, and Embase databases. In Situ Loading and Time-Resolved Synchrotron-Based Phase Contrast Tomography for the Mechanical Investigation of Connective Knee Tissues: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Articular cartilage and meniscus transfer and distribute mechanical loads in the knee joint. Degeneration of these connective tissues occurs during the progression of knee osteoarthritis, which affects their composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. A deeper understanding of disease progression can be obtained by studying them simultaneously. Time-resolved synchrotron-based X-ray phase-contrast tomography (SR-PhC-µCT) allows to capture the tissue dynamics. This proof-of-concept study presents a rheometer setup for simultaneous in situ unconfined compression and SR-PhC-µCT of conn…

Effects of intra-articular administration of autologous bone marrow aspirate on healing of full-thickness meniscal tear: an experimental study on sheep.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell and bone marrow elements on the healing of meniscal tears. METHODS: This study was performed on twelve, 2-year-old male Tahirova sheep. In each subject, one knee was used for experiment purposes and the other knee was used as a control. After creating a longitudinal full-thickness tear in the red-white zone of the medial meniscus, aspirated autologous bone marrow material was injected into the tear site in the experiment group. The control group received no intervention for secondary heal…

Meniscal ossicle: a case report.

Meniscal ossicle is a cortical or cancellous tissue with central viable marrow surrounded by meniscal cartilage. We present a case of medial meniscal ossicle at its posterior horn. A 21-year-old male military recruit visited our clinic due to left knee discomfort. He had not undergone any notable injury on the knee, but complained of intermittent catching or giving way without locking. Simple radiographs showed a small round bony fragment at posteromedial side of knee joint. The magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intra-substance lesion of meniscus, whose signal is identical to bone. On art…

Common pitfalls in magnetic resonance imaging of the knee.

Magnetic resonance examinations of 200 knees were studied retrospectively to determine the frequency with which normal ligamentous and tendinous structures mimicked pathological changes in the meniscus or elsewhere in the knee. Although the course of the transverse geniculate ligament simulated a tear of the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus on forty-four (22 per cent) of the sagittal magnetic-resonance scans, no tear of the lateral meniscus was found in the nine patients in this group who had an arthroscopic examination. The normal anatomy of the meniscofemoral ligament varies greatly. Th…

Meniscal root injury and spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee: an observation.

We describe injuries to the posterior root of the medial meniscus in patients with spontaneous osteonecrosis of the medial compartment of the knee. We identified 30 consecutive patients with spontaneous osteonecrosis of the medial femoral condyle. The radiographs and MR imaging were reviewed. We found tears of the posterior root of the medial meniscus in 24 patients (80%). Of these, 15 were complete and nine were partial. Complete tears were associated with > 3 mm of meniscal extrusion. Neither the presence of a root tear nor the volume of the osteonecrotic lesion were associated with age, bod…

Localized pigmented villonodular synovitis in the knee associated with locking symptoms.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) occurs in the knee more frequently than other joints. Most cases involve diffuse PVNS while the localized type is relatively rare. This report describes a patient who had PVNS and a lateral meniscus injury which induced locking symptoms in the knee. A closed reduction of the meniscus tear was performed under local anesthesia. However, complete extension of the knee was not achieved and the locking symptoms persisted. MRI examination showed a neoplastic lesion measuring approximately 2 x 2 cm in the intercondylar space together with a lateral meniscus tea…

Large lateral meniscal ganglion cyst extending into the intercondylar fossa of the knee.

We report the case of a 31-year-old, otherwise healthy man with a large intra-articular meniscal ganglion cyst (27.7 x 13.5 mm) originating from the dorsal horn of the lateral meniscus. Clinically, the patient presented with knee pain in a squatting position. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large intra-articular cyst in the posterior compartment. At arthroscopic surgery, the ganglion cyst was found in the intercondylar space posteriorly to the posterior cruciate ligament. After removal of the ganglion cyst, a horizontal tear in the dorsal horn of the lateral meniscus was revealed and tre…

[Significance of acute arthroscopy for the verification of fresh isolated cruciate ligament rupture].

Arthroscopy for diagnosis in isolated rupture of the cruciate ligaments of the knee. Arthroscopy of the knee was performed in the years 1981 through 1983 in 1107 patients, arthroscopic meniscectomy in 340 patients. In acute traumatic haemarthrosis of the knee 74 "isolated" ruptures of the cruciate ligaments were found. The exact disclosure of these 74 cases gave a real isolated rupture of the anterior cruciate in 28.4%, an isolated rupture combined with meniscus tears and connected with flake fracture each in 20.3%. In 17.5% the exact diagnosis was a disruption of the anterior cruciate togethe…

Two Uncommon Complications Related to Suture Knots After Meniscal All-Inside Suture Repair: A Case Report.

CASE: A 17-year-old male patient suffered a radial lateral meniscus tear and underwent an arthroscopic all-inside suture repair. After 7 months, the patient experienced catching. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography revealed an intra-articular loose body without calcification, which was removed surgically. The excised specimen was histopathologically confirmed to be a necrotic meniscus fragment with a suture knot. In addition, cartilage damage because of suspected impingement by a residual suture knot was observed. After removing the loose body and knot, the patient's symptoms we…
