Differentiation of Cerebral Neoplasms with Vessel Size Imaging (VSI).

PURPOSE: Cerebral neoplasms of various histological origins may show comparable appearances on conventional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Vessel size imaging (VSI) is an MRI technique that enables noninvasive assessment of microvasculature by providing quantitative estimates of microvessel size and density. In this study, we evaluated the potential of VSI to differentiate between brain tumor types based on their microvascular morphology. METHODS: Using a clinical 3T MRI scanner, VSI was performed on 25 patients with cerebral neoplasms, 10 with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), 8 with primary

Neuroprotective Effect of Ginkgo Biloba Extract Against Hypoxic Retinal Ganglion Cell Degeneration In Vitro and In Vivo.

Hypoxia-induced oxidative stress and disturbed microvascular circulation are both associated with pathogenesis of glaucoma. Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has been reported to have positive pharmacological effects on oxidative stress and impaired vascular circulation. This study aimed to investigate the neuroprotective effect of GBE against hypoxic injury to retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) both in vitro and in vivo. The rat RGC line was used, and oxidative stress was induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in vitro. EGb 761, a standardized GBE, or vehicle was applied to RGCs. Hypoxic optic nerve injury

Changes in the sublingual microcirculation and endothelial adhesion molecules during the course of severe meningococcal disease treated in the paediatric intensive care unit.

PURPOSE: The sublingual microcirculation can be visualised in real time using sidestream dark-field (SDF) imaging. Endothelial activation mediated through adhesion molecules may alter flow patterns in the microcirculation. We studied sublingual microcirculatory disturbances in children with meningococcal disease (MCD) and simultaneously measured plasma levels of adhesion molecules. METHOD: Twenty children admitted to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) with MCD were studied. Forty healthy children were controls. The sublingual microcirculation was assessed at admission and at timed inte

Normal cutaneous microcirculation in gaiter zone (ulcer-susceptible skin) versus nearby regions in healthy young adults.

Skin just proximal to the medial malleolus ('gaiter' zone) is the usual site for venous ulceration in later life, whereas shin and dorsum of the foot are generally unaffected. We studied the microcirculation of these regions in 6 healthy young adults to see whether any premorbid, constitutional differences in microvascular physiology or anatomy exist between local leg sites even in normal subjects. Capillary density was assessed by capillaroscopy (native and fluorescein) and local flow by laser Doppler fluxmetry, in supine and upright positions and during reactive hyperaemia. Supine capillary
