Seasonal occurrence of Leptotrombidium deliense (Acari: Trombiculidae) attached to sentinel rodents in an orchard near Bangkok, Thailand.

Leptotrombidium deliense Walch that attached to sentinel laboratory mice and the roof rat, Rattus rattus (L.), placed in an orchard habitat near Bangkok, Thailand, were studied between April 1993 and April 1995. A single L. deliense larva was attached to only 1 of 51 laboratory mice placed in the study area between April and September 1993. Overall, 89/202 (44.1%) R. rattus had 1 or more L. deliense larvae attached, and Orientia tsutsugamushi (Hayashi), the etiologic agent for scrub typhus, was isolated from liver/spleen samples of 2/202 (1.0%) rats placed in an endemic area for a single night

Efficacy of topically administered ivermectin against chorioptic and sarcoptic mange of cattle.

The efficacy of topically administered ivermectin against Chorioptes bovis and Sarcoptes scabiei var bovis on cattle was evaluated in five studies involving a total of 68 cattle. Treatment with ivermectin solution at a dose rate of 500 micrograms/kg bodyweight topically once was fully effective against C bovis and S scabiei when applied to healthy skin. Efficacy against S scabiei was impaired when the formulation was applied over areas of severe lesions caused by this parasite, presumably due to reduced absorption of ivermectin.

Ivermectin 1% cream for rosacea.

The etiology of papulopustular rosacea (PPR) is not well understood yet appears to involve both the innate and adaptive immune response in addition to possible infestation with Demodex mites. Current treatments for PPR consist mainly of antibiotics. Ivermectin cream 1%, a new topical treatment for PPR, possesses both anti-inflammatory and anti-parasitic properties. After 12 weeks of treatment, subjects treated with ivermectin cream 1% had significantly greater reductions in PPR symptoms and enhanced diseaserelated quality of life improvements compared to subjects who received vehicle. Furtherm

Cell typing of the scabetic lesion and its clinical correlation.

Scabies is a pruritic dermatosis due to infestation by a mite that stimulates both humoral and cellular immune responses causing cutaneous lesions as well as pruritus. Changes in immune response pattern with treatment are associated with improvement in symptoms and clinical cure. In this study, we analysed the cellular infiltrate types and patterns in lesions of Scabies. Treated patients were divided into 2 groups as those with and without pruritus. In the pre-treatment cases, there was a high incidence of T3, T4, T6 and T8 infiltration in the lesions, with T4 greater than T8. Following treatm

Bites, rashes, and itches. How to identify and treat them.

Skin rashes are commonly seen by the primary care physician. The chief cause of contact dermatitis is the plant genus Toxicodendron, but topical medications such as anesthetics, antibiotics, and preservatives also cause this condition. Commonly seen superficial fungal infections include candidiasis and several types of tinea. Microscopic identification of the organism on a potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation establishes the definitive diagnosis. In addition to occurring in its usual sites, the herpes simplex virus can cause recurrent disease on glabrous skin areas. A positive Tzanck test est

Scabies: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a skin infestation whose incidence is apparently rising. METHODS: This review is based on pertinent articles retrieved by a selective search of PubMed on diagnosis and treatment strategies. RESULTS: Thread-like papules (burrows), new, intense pruritus, and dermatitis guide the suspected diagnosis which is confirmed by the microscopic or dermatoscopic demonstration of scabies mites. The first line therapy is topical application of permethrin, in accordance with the current recommendations for its use. Other treatment options include systemic ivermectin and topical crota

Clinical efficacy of orally administered fluralaner for treatment of scabies in six free-ranging raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

BACKGROUND: Sarcoptic mange in free-ranging raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) caused by Sarcoptes scabiei is a widespread zoonotic disease that causes severe skin lesions with significant morbidity and mortality. Fluralaner is a member of the isoxazoline chemical class and is an acaricide and insecticide widely used in flea, tick and mite infections of dogs (Canis lupus familiaris). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of orally administered fluralaner in free-ranging raccoon dogs naturally infected with sarcoptic mange. ANIMALS: Six raccoon dogs rescued at the Seoul Wildlife C

Human otoacariasis.

Accidental entry of insects and other arthropods is a common aetiology of aural foreign bodies (FB) presenting to accident and emergency departments. A retrospective study revealed that the FB in almost half (148) of 348 cases of aural FB investigated at the Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital was an arthropod. The most common arthropod encountered was the cockroach, followed by a cattle tick. The high prevalence of tick infestation of the human ear canal (i.e. human otoacariasis) currently appears to be unique to the Malaysian state of Kelantan. The presentation of patients with intra-aural ti

Scabies, Bedbug, and Body Lice Infestations: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Scabies, bedbug, and body lice infestations are caused by organisms that live on or in the skin, on clothing, or in the environment and commonly cause pruritus and rash. In 2021, approximately 622 million incident cases of scabies occurred globally. Data on bedbug infestations are limited. Body lice prevalence ranges from 4.1% to 35% among persons experiencing homelessness worldwide. OBSERVATIONS: Scabies is caused by mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that burrow into the epidermis. Transmission primarily occurs from prolonged skin-to-skin contact with an individual who has an infestation

Demodicosis and Thyroid Autoimmunity: Unravelling the Connection.

Demodex mites are commensal ectoparasites in human pilosebaceous units that become pathogenic at high levels, causing demodicosis, which may be primary or secondary to immunosuppression. Thyroid hormones, with skin receptors, impact immune functions and epidermal inflammation. We hypothesised that skin features like xerosis and papular lesions, common in demodicosis, may also appear in autoimmune thyroid diseases, with immune dysregulation increasing Demodex colonisation. We recruited 201 patients with demodicosis or rosacea at Kayseri City Education and Research Hospital. Thyroid hormones (TS

Is there a correlation between canine adult-onset demodicosis and other diseases?

Demodicosis is frequently seen in small animal practice. In older dogs, it is often associated with immunosuppression and immunosuppressive diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate a larger number of dogs with adult-onset demodicosis (AOD) at the veterinary teaching hospitals of the University of Sydney/Australia and the University of Munich/Germany. Breed predispositions were compared with the two control populations. Of more than 20 000 dogs and 15 000 in each respective hospital population, 54 dogs in Munich and 68 dogs in Sydney were diagnosed with AOD at a mean age of 8 years. Bree

PCR analysis for Wolbachia in human and canine Demodex mites.

In many skin diseases such as Demodex folliculitis, rosacea- or steroid-induced rosacea Demodex mites are present in abundance and are at least partially held responsible for causing these disorders. Although it is known that these diseases respond well to tetracyclines, it is unclear if this is due to the antiinflammatory effects of the antibiotics or to an antibacterial effect on so far unknown bacteria within the Demodex mites. As in filariasis, where the response to doxycycline can be explained by the presence of Wolbachia within the filarial nematodes, this study was performed to see whet

Synthesis and acaricidal activity against Varroa destructor of α- and γ-costic acid dimers.

α-Costic acid is a natural sesquiterpene possessing diverse biological activities. Among these, the most promising property for practical application is its acaricidal activity against Varroa destructor, considered the most important and dangerous parasite of the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.). Infestations of V. destructor can decimate bee populations in just a few years, resulting in substantial environmental and economic losses. This study reports the synthesis of α- and γ-costic acid diesters with ethylene glycol and evaluates their acaricidal efficacy against V. destructor in comparison wit
