Spatiotemporal distribution of insecticide resistance in Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles subpictus in Sri Lanka.

The malaria situation in Sri Lanka worsened during the 1990s with the emergence and spread of resistance to the drugs and insecticides used for control. Chloroquine resistance has increased rapidly over this period, but adverse changes in malaria transmission are more closely associated with insecticide use rather than drug resistance. Insecticide susceptibility tests were routinely carried out in key anopheline vectors across the country for more than a decade. These sentinel data were combined with data collected by other research programmes and used to map the spatial and temporal trends of

Control of filarial infections: not the beginning of the end, but more research is needed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Infections with the filarial nematodes affect more than 150 million people mainly in the tropics. The very successful efforts to control filarial infections, however, have to be sustained by new tools that require long-term commitment to research. This review, focusing on reports from 2002 and 2003, highlights recent advances in research on immunology, understanding of pathogenesis and drug development in lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis research with potential relevance to the generation of new tools for control. RECENT FINDINGS: Dramatic improvement has been achiev

Role of wastewater irrigation in mosquito breeding in south Punjab, Pakistan.

Mosquito breeding within the wastewater irrigation system around the town of Haroonabad in the southern Punjab, Pakistan, was studied from July to September 2000 as part of a wider study of the costs and benefits of wastewater use in agriculture. The objective of this study was to assess the vector-borne human disease risks associated with mosquito species utilizing wastewater for breeding. Mosquito larvae were collected on a fortnightly basis from components of the wastewater disposal system and irrigated sites. In total, 133 samples were collected, about equally divided between agricultural

Operational feasibility of malaria control by burning neem oil in kerosene lamp in Beel Akbarpur village, District Ghaziabad, India.

A field trial in Beel Akbarpur village, Dadri PHC, District Ghaziabad (U.P.) was carried out to test the impact of burning neem oil in kerosene lamp from dusk-to-dawn in living rooms on vector populations and incidence of malaria. Results revealed that burning 1% neem oil in kerosene lamps resulted in the deviation of An. culicifacies from living rooms to cattlesheds. This was also reflected when malaria incidence was compared in experimental and control villages. Cases/000 and Pf/000 were 1.03 and 0.0 in experimental village as against 9.6 and 4.3 in control village. Discontinuation of burnin

Aedes albopictus in the United States: rapid spread of a potential disease vector.

Aedes albopictus, the Asian "tiger mosquito," was found in Houston, Texas, in 1985. Aedes albopictus is primarily a forest edge inhabiting species that has readily adapted to the container habitats produced by humans. Although not yet incriminated in the spread of any disease in the Americas, it has been repeatedly implicated in epidemic dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever transmission in Asia. It is a competent laboratory vector of La Crosse, yellow fever and other viruses, and can transovarially transmit at least 15 viruses. In 1986, Ae. albopictus was found in many other Texas counties, and

Non-linear associations between meteorological factors, ambient air pollutants and major mosquito-borne diseases in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Transmission intensity for mosquito-borne diseases are highly heterogenous and multi-factorial. Understanding risk factors associated to disease transmission allow the optimization of vector control. This study sets out to understand and compare the combined anthropogenic and environmental risk factors of four major mosquito-borne diseases, dengue, malaria, chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis in Thailand. METHODS: An integrated analysis of mosquito-borne diseases, meteorological and ambient air pollutants of 76 provinces of Thailand was conducted over 2003-2021. We explored the

Mathematical modeling of the 2023 dengue outbreak in the Centre Region of Burkina Faso: Parameter estimation and assessment of control strategies.

Mathematical models are valuable tools in the fight against infectious diseases such as dengue. However, their use to guide public health strategies in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Burkina Faso, remains limited due to the scarcity of locally calibrated models. Moreover, no study has yet applied the African vulture optimization algorithm (AVOA) for dengue parameters in this context. In this study, we develop a compartmental model to evaluate the impact of control strategies on the 2023 dengue epidemic in the Centre Region of Burkina Faso. The model combines a susceptible-infected (SI) st

Expression of defensin, cecropin, and transferrin in Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) infected with Wuchereria bancrofti (Spirurida: Onchocercidae), and the abnormal development of nematodes in the mosquito.

The temporal expression of defensin, cecropin and transferrin was assessed in Aedes aegypti naturally refractory to Wuchereria bancrofti upon infection with this worm, in parallel to analysis of filarial development in the insect. Compared to controls, transcription of defensin and cecropin was higher in infected mosquitoes as soon as 2h post infection and peaked before 48h. Transferrin transcription was higher in infected mosquitoes at 24h, and at 48h was almost leveled to controls. At 72h and 7 days post infection, levels of all transcripts in infected insects decreased gradually and were si

Genomic profiling of digestion related enzymes in Anopheles aquasalis a major coastal neotropical malaria vector.

Digestive genes are fundamental for the development and survival of mosquitoes and can serve as a target for the development of strategies for mosquito control or vector-borne disease prevention. Genes related to digestion were identified in the genome of the neotropical malaria vector Anopheles aquasalis by similarity. We used reciprocal BLAST with annotated digestion proteins for Anopheles gambiae. Orthology and evolutionary analyses were performed using MEGA with a bootstrapped phylogenetic tree constructed by the neighbor-joining method, and copy number variation was measured by the standa…

Larvicidal activity of the leaf extracts of Spondias mombin Linn. (Anacardiaceae) from various solvents against malarial, dengue and filarial vector mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Aedes aegypti, Anopheles gambiae and Culex quinquefasciatus are vector mosquitoes of dengue, malaria, and filariasis, respectively. Since no vaccine is available to treat these diseases, the control of the main mosquito vectors is essential. As conventional insecticides have limited success, plants may be alternative larvicidal agents, since they contain a rich source of bioactive chemicals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the larvicidal activity of methanol crude extract, hexane, dichloromethane, acetone, ethyl acetate and methanol fractions of Spondias mombin l

Insecticide resistance and malaria transmission: infection rate and oocyst burden in Culex pipiens mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium relictum.

BACKGROUND: The control of most vectors of malaria is threatened by the spread of insecticide resistance. One factor that has been hitherto largely overlooked is the potential effects of insecticide resistance on the ability of mosquitoes to transmit malaria: are insecticide-resistant mosquitoes as good vectors of Plasmodium as susceptible ones? The drastic physiological changes that accompany the evolution of insecticide resistance may indeed alter the ability of vectors to transmit diseases, a possibility that, if confirmed, could have major epidemiological consequences. METHODS: Using a no

MEFAS, a hybrid of artesunate-mefloquine active against asexual stages of Plasmodium vivax in field isolates, inhibits malaria transmission.

Human malaria continues to be a public health problem and an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Malaria control is achieved through both individual protection against mosquito bites and drug treatment, which is hampered by the spread of Plasmodium falciparum resistance to most antimalarials, including artemisinin derivatives. One of the key pharmacological strategies for controlling malaria is to block transmission of the parasites to their mosquito vectors. Following this rational, MEFAS, a synthetic hybrid salt derived from artesunate (AS) and mefloquine has been previo

Ovicidal and adulticidal potential of leaf and seed extract of Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth. (Family: Fabaceae) against Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, and Anopheles stephensi (Diptera: Culicidae).

Several diseases are associated to the mosquito-human interaction. Mosquitoes are the carriers of severe and well-known illnesses such as malaria, arboviral encephalitis, dengue fever, chikungunya fever, West Nile virus, and yellow fever. These diseases produce significant morbidity and mortality in humans and livestock around the world. In the present study, hexane, benzene, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol extracts of leaf and seed of Albizia lebbeck were assayed for their toxicity against three important vector mosquitoes, viz., Culex quinquefasciatus, Aedes aegypti, and Anopheles st

Highly sensitive droplet digital PCR-based diagnostics for the surveillance of malaria vector populations in low transmission and incipient resistance settings.

BACKGROUND: Sensitive monitoring of Plasmodium infective mosquitoes in low malaria transmission settings is of high priority for disease control. Early detection of insecticide resistance at low frequencies is also key for vector monitoring nowadays, when new insecticides are launched to control vector populations. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: An. gambiae mosquitoes with predetermined infection and resistance status were used to produce populations with various malaria infection rates and mutant allelic frequencies (MAFs) of target site insecticide resistance traits. Total RNA and gDNA were i

The toxicity of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors to larvae of the disease vectors Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae.

The control of mosquitoes is threatened by the appearance of insecticide resistance and therefore new control chemicals are urgently required. Here we show that inhibitors of mosquito peptidyl dipeptidase, a peptidase related to mammalian angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), are insecticidal to larvae of the mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae. ACE inhibitors (captopril, fosinopril and fosinoprilat) and two peptides (trypsin-modulating oostatic factor/TMOF and a bradykinin-potentiating peptide, BPP-12b) were all inhibitors of the larval ACE activity of both mosquitoes. Two inhibito

Identification of dengue virus in Aedes mosquitoes and patients' sera from Si Sa Ket Province, Thailand.

Dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS) are the re-emerging infectious diseases caused by dengue (DEN) virus, transmitted by Aedes mosquito. There are more than 100,000 cases of dengue infection and more than 100 deaths annually in Thailand. Virological surveillance for DEN viruses is used as an early warning system to predict outbreaks. The seroprevalence of infection and serotypes of DEN virus in 116 pediatric patients at Si Sa Ket Province, Thailand were analyzed during June to September 2004. At the same period, Aedes mosquitoes were caught from pa
