Soleus, extensor digitorum longus and tibialis anterior muscles of mice voluntarily running in wheels for periods of 5 to 120 days were studied in spaced serial and serial cross-sections. Shortly after the onset of running and during the next 2 weeks, degeneration, necrosis, phagocytosis and regeneration of muscle fibers, satellite cell proliferation and cellular infiltration were found in soleus muscles of mice from all strains investigated (CBA/J, NMRI, C57bl, NIH, SWS and Balb/c). Tibialis anterior but not extensor digitorum longus muscles were also damaged. Predominantly high-oxidative fib

In this article, we report a case of severe median nerve compression in the forearm caused by a large hematoma resulting from an iatrogenic pseudoaneurysm of the radial artery. Two weeks before presenting to our emergency room with neuropathic pain and persistent numbness of the palm, thumb, index, and middle fingers, as well as thumb motor deficits, the patient had undergone wrist denervation at an external outpatient clinic. Duplex ultrasound indicated a large pseudoaneurysm of the radial artery, which was confirmed by computed tomography angiography. The patient underwent emergency surgery,

The aim of this study was to assess intraoperatively the hemodynamic changes in the donor vessel of free latissimus dorsi (LD) flap before and after denervation and to analyze flow changes after flap transfer. Twenty-seven patients underwent LD muscle microvascular reconstruction for lower-limb soft tissue defects. Measurements of blood flow were performed intraoperatively by using a 2- to 5-mm probe ultrasonic transit-time flowmeter around the dissected vessels. Registrations were made in the thoracodorsal artery before and after harvesting the flap, after compressing and cutting the motor ne

Haemodynamic and hormonal effects of two oral isovolaemic, isoosmotic solutions of 0.5 g/kg and 1.0 g/kg glucose were studied in 10 humans with sympathetic denervation due to primary autonomic failure (AF). Measurements were made supine for 60 min, and also after 5 min 45 head-up tilt, before and 60 min after glucose. There was a similar fall in blood pressure (BP) after each dose, after 0.5 g/kg from 160+/-12 / 87+/-6 to 143+/-13 / 76+/-6 mm Hg, P < 0.05 and after 1.0 g/kg from 160+/-13 / 90+/-6 to 136+/-9 / 76+/-5 mm Hg, P < 0.05. Palatal tremor (PT) is a rare disease associated with rhythmic movements of the soft palate. It can be separated into two distinct clinical entities: symptomatic and essential. Most patients with essential PT complain of the rhythmic ear clicks and in some cases tinnitus, but usually have an uneventful medical history. Symptomatic PT patients are often unaware of the palatal movements and have symptoms and signs of brainstem or cerebellar dysfunction. We describe the case of a 25-year-old patient who developed severe essential PT, with very distressing bilateral objective tinnitus, constantly

Patients with juvenile muscular atrophy of distal upper extremity (Hirayama's disease) often show marked weakness of the fingers occurring with exposure to cold. We term this phenomenon cold paresis. We conducted an original test to induce cold paresis (Cold Paresis Inducement Test) in 11 patients of this disease and 10 normal controls. Cold paresis was induced in 9 of 11 patients, but was not induced in the 2 patients who had the disease longer than 20 years and in all normal controls. We examined the electromyogram of abductor digiti minimi during 5 Hz and 20 Hz rate of ulnar nerve stimulati

We report an unusual case of unilateral limb pseudo hypertrophy in a 21-year-old lady who developed progressive enlargement of the right calf followed by thigh in association with chronic leg pain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the affected limb confirmed enlargement of various muscles. Electromyography revealed neurogenic features consistent with S1 radiculopathy. MRI of the lumbosacral spine showed tethered cord with a lipoma infiltrating multiple sacral roots. Our case illustrates that muscular pseudo hypertrophy may follow chronic denervation as a consequence of spinal neural compres

Peripheral nerves are easily damaged, resulting in loss of motor and sensory function. Recovery of motor and sensory function after peripheral nerve injury is suboptimal, even after appropriate surgical repair. This is due to the slow rate of axonal elongation during regeneration and atrophic changes that occur in denervated Schwann cells and target muscle with proximal lesions. One way to solve this problem is to accelerate the rate at which the axons regenerate. In this issue of the JCI, Ma and colleagues show that this can be achieved in mice by overexpression of heat shock protein 27, prov

We report on a 30-year-old patient with isolated, left-sided hypoglossal nerve palsy after uncomplicated, presumably streptococci-induced tonsillitis. Needle electromyography (EMG) of the tongue showed denervation changes in the muscles supplied by the left hypoglossal nerve. Cranial CT and MRI, CSF examination, Doppler sonography, visual evoked potential (VEP), and auditory evoked potential (AEP) showed no abnormalities and, in particular, no signs of the carotid artery dissection or brainstem lesion. The symptoms and signs resolved within a few weeks after penicillin V treatment. We suppose

The case of a patient with epithelioid sarcoma in the right arm is reported. The diagnosis was delayed because of misinterpretation arising from complexity in the MR findings, including a honeycomb pattern in the subcutaneous fat simulating lymphedema, and an intramuscular diffuse high signal intensity on T2-weighted images without a discrete mass lesion. The histological findings revealed that the diffuse muscular abnormality mainly resulted from denervation of the muscles due to perineural invasion by the tumor, and subcutaneous edema from lymphedema secondary to lymphatic tumor spread concu

Bladder neuropathy was diagnosed in 3 patients with systemic vasculitis (temporal arteritis: 1 case; periarteritis nodosa: 2 cases). Clinical characteristics were: dysuria, diminished or abolished bladder sensation leading to indolent bladder retention. Urodynamic investigation showed hypotonic and underactive detrusor, increased detrusor compliance, hyposensitive bladder, and/or overactive urethral closure. Needle electrode examination showed signs of denervation of periurethral muscles; sacral evoked latencies were increased, favouring pudenal nerve alterations. Symptoms and urodynamic abnor

Non-operative management has frequently been adopted for closed injuries of the infraclavicular brachial plexus and its branches in the belief that spontaneous recovery is likely to occur, and surgical exploration is performed only if recovery has not occurred in the expected time. This paper correlates the clinical and electrophysiological features with the operative findings in six patients with such injuries. The axillary nerve was ruptured in all six patients, the musculocutaneous nerve in two and the radial nerve in two. When the muscles supplied by a branch of the plexus were denervated,

We present the case of a woman with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) in whom the usual symptoms were preceded by a rapidly progressive peripheral neuropathy. Few cases of peripheral nerve involvement have been described. For the first time we report an ultrastructural study of an affected peripheral nerve and muscle. In the sural nerve we found an almost complete loss of myelinated fibers. Schwann cells showed an abnormal hyperplasia of their basal membranes and structural signs of denervation. Spindle-shaped banded structures were seen in the cytoplasm of Schwann cells and in the endoneur

Four cases of familial spastic paraplegia with amyotrophy in siblings from a consanguineous married are reported. The routine laboratory examination were normal. The electromiography and muscle biopsy processed by histochemistry showed signs of denervation with reinervation. The motor nerve conduction velocity was decreased in the peroneal nerve in 3 cases. The teased fiber preparation of sural nerves was abnormal in four cases. It was found increased of C, D and G fibers suggesting demyelination with secondary remyelination. The authors believe the abnormalities found could be due the distal

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine the reliability and validity of a new non-invasive ultrasound technique to measure gastrocnemius muscle atrophy after nerve denervation in an animal model.
METHODS: In sixteen rodents an eight mm sciatic nerve gap was created. In the following 8 weeks, each week, two rodents were euthanized and the gastrocnemius muscle was examined using two different ultrasound systems and two investigators. The standardized ultrasound measurement protocol consisted of identifying pre-defined anatomical landmarks: 1) the fibula, 2) the fibular nerve, a

OBJECTIVES: Acute poliomyelitis causes degeneration of anterior horn cells, followed by denervation. Reinnervation and muscle fibre hypertrophy are mechanisms that compensate this loss of neurones. Concentric needle EMG (CNEMG) and macro EMG are two methods to assess the magnitude of initial involvement and the compensatory reinnervation. The aim of this study is to explore the difference between CNEMG and macro EMG describing the status of the motor unit in patients previously affected by polio.
METHODS: Macro and concentric needle EMG investigations were performed in 261 muscles in 121 pati

Procidentia, vaginal vault prolapse and severe cystocele may be associated with potential urinary incontinence, which becomes overt only after surgical repair of the genital prolapse. The normal support of the pelvic organs is provided by the pelvic diaphragm (levator ani and coccygeus muscles). The levator plate is a firm, muscular plate between the coccyx and anus formed by fusion of the levator ani muscles on each side. Recent investigators have indicated that the main mechanism for weakening the pelvic muscles occurs as a result of childbearing, when stretch injury of the pudendal nerve ca
