Ultrasound imaging of pediatric nail psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency ultrasound (US) of the nail in pediatric psoriasis remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: To describe nail US feature … US abnormalities were identified in 46.5% of children. PD activity was present in 37.2%, including nails without clinical changes. Trilaminar loss was observed in 4.7%, and classic Wortsman-type patterns were uncommon. Hair and Nail Pathology in Primary Care.

Hair and nail complaints are common in the primary care clinic. Although not a comprehensive assessment of all conditions, this article addresses the most common hair and nail pathologies seen in primary care clinics. It discusses physiologic explanations for pathology to provide clinicians with a framework for narrowing their differential diagnosis. It also provides guidance for identifying significant pathology that would best be served through referrals to specialist providers.

Nail toxicity associated with anticancer agents.

In recent decades, cancer mortality rates have declined due to development of systemic antineoplastic agents targeting specific cancer pathways. Nail toxicities associated with these therapies are underrecognized by many and contribute significantly to patient morbidity. Nail changes from chemotherapy occur due to toxicity to continuously dividing nail matrix keratinocytes. Preventive measures, including avoiding repeated trauma from manicuring and artificial nails, regular nail trimming, and applying emollients to cuticles are essential in mitigating nail toxicities. Frozen gloves or socks ha…

Differential diagnosis of pigmented nail lesions.

The diagnosis of pigmented nail lesions is a concern for both general practitioners and dermatologists, due to the possibility of indicating nail melanoma. The origin of the dark pigmentation can be either melanocytic or non-melanocytic (fungi, bacteria, or blood), and clinical evaluation alone may not be sufficient for differentiation, requiring additional exams. Onychoscopy provides valuable information prior to biopsy. The causes of nail pigmentation will be described to aid in the differential diagnosis.

Nail disorders as clues to systemic disease.

Disorders of the nail unit can provide important clues to underlying systemic diseases. Onychodystrophy or nail abnormalities include altered nail color, shape, or texture with morphology and growth patterns often related to local anatomic factors such as edema, vascular supply, and neurologic innervation. Associated pain or loss-of-function can also affect daily activities. Because nail changes may be due to a range of systemic diseases, the authors provide a systems-based broad overview of the common nail findings in patients with internal disease.

Nail Supplements: When, How, and Why?

BACKGROUND: The number of supplements for nail health is continuously increasing, and consumers are no longer familial with them, which can create confusion, as they do not always understand what they are consuming, and some will seek advice from their dermatologist, who must have as clear and a precise answer. SUMMARY: Biotin, collagen peptides, solubilized keratin MSM, and choline-stabilized orthosilicic acid have been shown to improve the clinical appearance of nails, strength, and brittleness. There is a lack of regulation from the health authorities concerning dietary supplements. Manufa…

Apocrine Hidrocystoma of the Nail: A Unique Case.

Apocrine hidrocystomas are benign, cystic neoplastic lesions resulting from the apocrine secretory component of the sweat gland. They most commonly occur on the head and neck, with predilection to the periorbital area. Less frequent sites include the axilla, nipple, external auditory canal, foreskin, conjunctiva, lower lip, and fingers, among others. The authors report a unique case of a nail bed hidrocystoma in a 55-year-old woman, a site not previously described.
