OBJECTIVES: Planned neck dissection after chemoradiation (CR) is often advocated in patients with head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) with advanced nodal disease who demonstrate a clinical complete response to CR because identification of residual occult nodal disease is difficult. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of metastasis in the perimarginal nodes (PMNs) (also known as perifacial, preglandular and retroglandual nodes) in head and neck cancer.
METHODS: We recruited 136 patients affected by cancers of the oral cavity, lip, oropharynx, skin and by cáncer of unknown primary (CUP), who were candidates for level IB dissection. INTRODUCTION: Dermoid cysts of the submandibular region are rare. We report an exceptional case with extension to the neck.
OBSERVATION: The patient presented with a voluminous left submandibular cystic tumor with extension to the neck and to floor of the mouth. Ultrasonography and CT scan contributed to the diagnosis and to chose the best surgical approach in case of large cyst. In our case, the tumor was removed using a double cervical and intraoral approach. Histopathological examination confirmed a dermoid cyst.

This study is aimed at updating our institution's experience with definitive radiotherapy (RT) for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. We reviewed 531 patients treated between 1983 and 2012 with definitive RT for squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. Of these, 179 patients were treated with either induction (n = 19) or concomitant (n = 160) chemotherapy. Arterial dissections of head and neck arteries were first identified pathologically in the 1950s, but not until the 1970s and the 1980s did they begin to be widely recognized as a clinical entity. Carotid and vertebral artery dissections account for only 2% of all ischemic strokes, but they account for approximately 20% of thromboembolic strokes in patients younger than 45 years. The cause of supra-aortic dissections can be either spontaneous or traumatic. This article addresses spontaneous cervical and cerebral artery dissections.

BACKGROUND: Cervical lymphadenectomy to remove metastatic disease in level II encompasses lymph nodes associated with the upper third of the internal jugular vein and the adjacent spinal accessory nerve (SAN). Conservative neck dissection (ND) preserves these structures but requires manipulation of the SAN to remove tissue located in the posterosuperior aspect of level II. Limiting the dissection to the nodal group anterior to the SAN may reduce operating time and limit injury to it without compromising the removal of lymph nodes at risk for involvement with cancer.

Madelung-Launois-Bensaude lipomatosis is a rare disease characterized by an enormous accumulation of fat, mainly in the region of the neck. A case is presented to illustrate the course of the disease and its clinical features. Fourty-four patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue have been treated by surgery. Twenty-two out of 44 patients were treated by a glossectomy alone and the remaining 22 by en bloc dissection with a glossectomy and neck dissection. The 5-year cumulative survival rate of these 44 cases was 86.1%, broken down as follows: stage I (20 cases), 100%; stage II (9 cases), 88.9%; stage III (11 cases), 72.7%; and, stage IV (4 cases), 50%.
