Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of head and neck skin: a systematic analysis of 11 cases and review of literature.

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the skin (LELCS) is a rare tumor of unknown etiology, low malignant potential, and microscopic resemblance to undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Clinically, it presents as a flesh-colored firm nodule or plaque on the face, scalp, or shoulder of middle-aged to elderly individuals. Histologically, LELCS is composed of islands of enlarged epithelial cells with large vesicular nuclei surrounded and permeated by a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. LELCS exhibits immunoreactivity with high-molecular-weight cytokeratins and epithelial membrane antigen, in

Adenocarcinoma of the parotid salivary gland in a cow.

A 6-year-old Girolando dairy cow was presented for evaluation of a large subcutaneous facial mass. Fine-needle aspirates of the mass contained many neoplastic cells with high nuclear:cytoplasmic ratios arranged in sheets and loosely cohesive clusters with streaming erythrocytes and neutrophils in the background. Neoplastic cells were 13-25 μm in diameter and were round to cuboidal with variably distinct borders. Based on the signalment, anatomic location, and cytologic findings, differential diagnoses included salivary adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The

Cathepsin-K inhibition enhances anti-cancerous activity within oral squamous cell carcinoma cells: Uncloaking the potency of new K21 formulation.

BACKGROUND: The ability of cancer cells to be invasive and metastasize depend on several factors, of which the action of protease activity takes center stage in disease progression. PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: To analyze function of new K21 molecule in the invasive process of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell line. MATERIALS & METHODS: The Fusobacterium (ATCC 23726) streaks were made, and pellets were resuspended in Cal27 (ATCC CRL-2095) OSCC cell line spheroid cell microplate. Cells were seeded and Lysotracker staining performed for CathepsinK red channel. Cell and morphology were evaluated u

A Curious Case of Clear Cell Morphology in a Patient with Lung Cancer: Diagnostic Challenges.

An 82-year-old woman with COPD presented to the emergency department with cough, increasing sputum production, wheezing, and worsening shortness of breath for two weeks. On imaging studies, the patient was found to have a right upper lobe spiculated nodule and an endobronchial lesion with near total occlusion of the right lower lobe bronchus with sub-segmental atelectasis. Bronchoscopy with EBUS-TBNA of subcarinal and right hilar lymph nodes revealed lung cancer with clear cell phenotype. Given the predominance of clear cell morphology, the diagnosis of metastatic renal or ovarian cancer was e

Urogenital Lesions in Nonhuman Primates at 2 National Primate Research Centers.

Given their genetic and anatomic similarities to humans, nonhuman primates (NHPs) may serve as animal models for urogenital diseases of humans. The purpose of this study was to examine the frequency of spontaneous urogenital lesions occurring over a 30-year period at the Yerkes and Southwest National Primate Research Centers and to compare and contrast lesions occurring in Old World versus New World primates. Lesions occurring in the chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), baboon (Papio spp.), rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis), pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrin

Propofol inhibits the proliferation, invasion, migration, and angiogenesis of oral squamous cell carcinoma through circ_0008898-mediated pathway.

Propofol has been shown to inhibit oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) progression. However, it is not clear whether propofol mediates OSCC progression through regulating circular RNA (circRNA) network. Quantitative real-time PCR was used to detect circ_0008898, miR-545-3p, and CT10 regulator of kinase-like protein (CRKL) expression. Cell functions were determined using CCK8 assay, Edu staining, MTT assay, transwell assay, wound healing assay, tube formation assay, and flow cytometry. Protein levels were examined by western blot analysis. RNA interaction was confirmed by dual-luciferase report

Tumour Genetic Heterogeneity in Relation to Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Anti-Cancer Treatment.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) represents more than 90% of all oral cancers and is the most frequent SCC of the head and neck region. It may affect any oral mucosal subsite but most frequently the tongue, followed by the floor of the mouth. The use of tobacco and betel nut, either smoked or chewed, and abuse of alcohol are the main risk factors for oral SCC. Oral SCC is characterized by considerable genetic heterogeneity and diversity, which together have a significant impact on the biological behaviour, clinical course, and response to treatment and on the generally poor prognosis of this

Noninvasive genomic profiling of somatic mutations in oral cavity cancers.

OBJECTIVES: Somatic mutations may predict prognosis, therapeutic response, or cancer progression. We evaluated targeted sequencing of oral rinse samples (ORS) for non-invasive mutational profiling of oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A custom hybrid capture panel targeting 42 frequently mutated genes in OSCC was used to identify DNA sequence variants in matched ORS and fresh-frozen tumors from 120 newly-diagnosed patients. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves determined the optimal variant allele fraction (VAF) cutoff for variant discrimination in ORS. Beh

Time-varying association of second primary malignancy and long-term survival outcomes in patients with head and neck cancer.

A high risk of developing second primary malignancy (SPM) has been reported among head and neck cancer patients. Here, we aimed to statistically quantify the impact of SPM development on the survival of head and neck cancer patients. Our study was conducted using the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database to collect the data of 48 316 patients who received curative surgical resection for initial primary head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (IP-HNSCC) in 1975 to 2019. SPM diagnosis was treated as a time-varying covariate and multivariable Cox regression analysis was conducted to e

Necroptosis in human cancers with special emphasis on oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Necroptosis is a type of caspase independent 'programmed or regulated' necrotic cell death that has a morphological resemblance to necrosis and mechanistic analogy to apoptosis. This type of cell death requires RIPK1, RIPK3, MLKL, death receptors, toll like receptors, interferons, and various other proteins. Necroptosis is implicated in plethora of diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, Alzheimer's disease, Crohn's disease, and head and neck cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma. Oral carcinomas show dysregulation or mutation of necroptotic proteins, mediate antitumoral immunity, activat

Definitive chemoradiation for oropharyngeal squamous carcinomas: Outcomes with intensity-modulated radiation therapy using simultaneous integrated boost, in a majorly p16 negative cohort.

BACKGROUND: The literature on modern-era outcomes of oropharyngeal squamous carcinoma (OPSCC) in India is limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed records of consecutive patients with OPSCC treated using a curative SIB IMRT regimen of 66 Gy/30#/6 weeks. RESULTS: One hundred fifteen patients from July 2011 to December 2018 were analyzed. Twenty of 69 patients tested positive for p16. In p16 positive patients, the K-M probability of being disease free and alive at 2 years, with at least one follow-up 3 months after treatment, was 83% (median not reached) compared with 48% if p16 was unknown

A nomogram for predicting overall survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Floor of mouth squamous cell carcinoma (SCCFOM) is a rare but aggressive malignancy with 5-year overall survival (OS) rates below 40% in published studies. However, the clinicopathological predictors of the prognosis of SCCFOM remain undefined. We aimed to establish a model to predict the survival outcomes of SCCFOM. METHODS: We searched the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for patients diagnosed with SCCFOM between 2000 and 2017. Data on patient demographics, treatment modalities, and survival outcomes were retrieved. Risk factors for OS were evaluated

Chemoradiation therapy alters the PD-L1 score in locoregional recurrent squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck.

PD-L1 testing guides therapeutic decision-making for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We sought to understand whether chemoradiation therapy (CRT) influences the PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) and other biomarkers of response to immunotherapy. PD-L1 expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry, and bulk RNA sequencing was performed on 146 HNSCC patients (65 primary sites, 50 paired local recurrences, and 31 paired regional recurrences). PD-L1 was scored using the CPS of ≥1, ≥20, and ≥50. Overall, 98 %, 54 %, and 17 % of HNSCCs had a CPS ≥1, ≥20, and ≥50, respectively.

Major haemorrhage after non-surgical management of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: Major haemorrhage is a rare complication after chemoradiotherapy for oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. This is managed by interventional neuroradiology with endovascular embolisation of the bleeding vessel. This study aimed to describe radiological and clinical predictors of haemorrhage. METHODS: A retrospective case series was conducted of all patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas who suffered a major haemorrhage requiring embolisation during or after treatment with chemoradiotherapy or radiotherapy alone, between 2013 and 2021, in Western Australia. RESULTS:
