Adherence to a 2-layer compression system for chronic venous ulceration.

Adherence to compression therapy is fundamental for healing venous leg ulcers (Moffatt, 2004). The aim of this study was to investigate adherence and comfort associated with using a 2-layer compression system over a 6-week period for the management of chronic venous leg ulceration in patients with a history of non-adherence to other compression systems. Self-report rating scales were completed each week by the patients to record adherence and comfort of the compression system, while condition and ease of use of the system were recorded each week by the nurses involved in their care. The majori

Nurses' and family members'. Perceptions of nursing home residents' needs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of agreement between nursing home staff and families in assessing the needs of cognitively impaired nursing home residents. A convenience sample of 36 family members of nursing home residents with cognitive impairment and the nurses assigned to those patients was recruited from three nursing homes. The Nurse and Resident Perceptions Questionnaire, adapted from Lindgren and Linton (1991), was used to assess functioning in activities of daily living, physiologic, and psychosocial areas. Significant differences were found for eight items of ph

Exploring augmentative and alternative communication in intensive care units: nurses' experiences, knowledge, and training preferences in Cyprus.

PURPOSE: Nurses provide quality and safe care to critically ill patients in intensive care units (ICUs) who might also experience severe speech-language production and/or comprehension impairments. However, interpreting patients' communication efforts is not always possible for several reasons, such as lack of time or training. The current study aimed to investigate ICU nurses' Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) knowledge and determine their preference for receiving training on AAC forms of communication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and two ICU nurses from Cyprus's three

The experience of transportation to visit a nursing home resident: A case study.

Maintaining social connections in the community can be accomplished through transportation access and opportunities. This includes relationships between family and residents in nursing homes. Previous research supports the relationship between transportation, social support, and visitation of residents in nursing homes (NHs), however no empirical research to date explores this relationship of family member transportation as a means to visit their loved one in this setting. Guided by a case study approach, a sample of 11 (N = 11) family members of residents in nursing homes across North Central

RE-AIM evaluation of a community-based vaccine education and communication program to improve human papillomavirus vaccine uptake in Tonga.

There is a global need for effective strategies to improve acceptance and uptake of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, particularly in the Pacific where cervical screening and treatment options are limited. While the Pacific Island nation of Tonga has high routine childhood vaccine coverage, HPV vaccine uptake has remained low since its introduction in 2022. To improve vaccine acceptance and uptake, recent evidence supports the use of community engagement approaches like the Vaccine Champions program, which trains health and community leaders to advocate for vaccines. We assessed the reac

Implementation of a Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccination Condition of Employment in a Community Nursing Home.

The rate of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination uptake by US nursing home staff remains low despite the increased risks of viral transmission and related morbidity and mortality in this setting. This study describes vaccine uptake activities including a COVID-19 vaccination condition of employment (COE) policy in one community nursing home. This case study summarizes the timeline of vaccination uptake activities, staff vaccination rates over time, and stakeholder perspectives around the implementation of a COVID-19 vaccination COE. Organizational data were used to calculate vaccina

Does sense of coherence affect the relationship between self-rated health and health status in a sample of community-dwelling frail elderly people?

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to examine the association between self-rated health (SRH) and physical, functional, social and mental health measures in community dwelling elderly people needing nursing care. Of special interest was how coping resources (SOC) influenced this relationship. Self-rated health is a good predictor of future health status as measured by mortality and morbidity, decline of functional abilities, use of healthcare, and nursing home placement. The high mean age and the relatively high level of care-dependency in this sample, make this investigation importan

Women over the age of 85 years who live alone: a descriptive study.

New Zealand as a society is ageing. This translates to an increasing number of people particularly women, over the age of 85 years. Despite many older women living alone, they are often perceived by both society and health professionals as frail and dependent. This qualitative study was designed to explore and describe experiences of older women who lived alone in the community. A qualitative descriptive methodology underpinned the study. A sample of five older women who lived alone in their own homes was interviewed. Data were analysed using a general inductive approach. Three themes emerged

Catheterization in the community: converting to the Foley catheter tray.

With the aim of minimizing clinical incidents and improving clinical practice, the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board carried out a trial of a Foley catheter tray to be carried by district nurses as emergency boot stock. As part of the trial all nurses had to undergo training on the Foley catheter tray prior to use. The district nurses using the tray reported improvement in confidence, efficiency, convenience and patient experience. Owing to the success of the initiative, use of the Foley catheter tray as emergency boot stock is now standard practice for District Nursing/Acute Response a
