Childhood malnutrition is an urgent public health concern that negatively influences vulnerable populations and strengthens inequities in health. Child malnutrition occurs both as a result of undernutrition and overnutrition, both of which disrupt child physical growth and mental development and, in turn, lead to long-term health consequences that may extend into adulthood, as well as perpetuate cycles of malnutrition intergenerationally. The purpose of this narrative review is to evaluate nutritional support strategies through locally relevant policies, community engagement and support, healt

The double burden of malnutrition (under- and overnutrition) is a serious public health issue in childhood. The mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is a simple tool for screening nutritional status, but studies of the optimal cutoff to define malnutrition are limited. This study aimed to explore the prediction of malnutrition by MUAC in Sri Lankan schoolchildren. The participants were 538 students (202 boys, 336 girls) aged 5-10 years. Spearman's rank correlation was calculated for MUAC and both body-mass-index-for-age z-score (BAZ) and height-for-age z-score (HAZ). Receiver operating character

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between age and serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) in malnourished and well-fed pre-school Nigerian children in Zaria, northern Nigeria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum total cholesterol (TC) and TG concentrations were measured in 115 malnourished and 115 age- and gender-matched well-fed children aged one (1)-three (3) years. These consisted of 25, 30, 30 and 30 children with kwashiorkor, marasmic-kwashiorkor, marasmus and underweight, respectively with their corresponding age- and gender-matched well-fed chi

Malnutrition, present in 16-50% of ALS patients, is an independent prognostic factor for worsened survival. It is caused primarily by swallowing dysfunction, resulting from involvement of the lower sets of cranial nerves, but hypermetabolism is also implicated. Malnutrition itself can produce neuromuscular weakness and adversely affect patients' quality of life, thereby creating a vicious circle. The nutritional status of ALS patients can be assessed with dietary review and measurements of weight (W) and height (H). A body mass index (BMI = W/H2) below 18.5-20 kg/m2 indicates a state of malnut

At the Department for TB and Respiratory Diseases of the Faculty Hospital in Prague Motol at present half the patients with cystic fibrosis who in the Czech Republic reached adult age are being followed-up. The objective of the present work was to evaluate the nutritional profile of these adult patients with cystic fibrosis. The authors examined 15 patients, mean age 22.9 +/- 3.2 years. The examination included assessment of height, body weight, skinfold thickness above the triceps, brachii, the energy output transferrin, blood gases. Functional examination of the lungs was made by the method

The bone mineralization of 6 male and 18 female adolescents with a mean age of 12 years and 11 months, who had suffered severe, early, postnatal protein-energy undernutrition, was analyzed. These patients have been followed up at our Institute since their nutritional rehabilitation. Bone mineralization was measured by bone dual isotopic densitometry (Gd 153). These results were compared with those of normal school-age Chilean children of the same age and sex. Weight for height of adolescent who had suffered from undernutrition was similar to the controls, and both were over 100% of the standar

A coproparasitological survey is carried out in 3 family doctors' home-offices in City of Havana Province following the Kato-Katz technique (3 samples from each person); we found 15 children predisposed to high-load infection by Trichuris trichiura. This group was compared to a group of 20 children infected with a low parasite load, and to another group of 20 children with no parasite infection. A study of nutritional anemia was carried out to all of them including: hemoglobin, hematocrit, ferritin, serum iron, vitamin B12, and serum and erythrocyte folates. No significant differences were fou

Twenty-six children with marasmus and 27 with kwashiorkor were compared with 23 control children of matching ages. Kwashiorkor was characterized by increased phospholipids (NS), low (P < 0.01) apolipoprotein (apo) B-rich LDL, and near normal apo A-I and HDL-C. In children with marasmus apo B (P < 0.02) LDL-C (NS), apo A-I (P < 0.01), and HDL-C (P < 0.001) decreased. Fifteen children in each group were followed for 2 wk. Control values were progressively reached after 2 wk. In the younger children final apo B was higher than in control subjects (P < 0.03) but apo A-I was identical. Apo A-IV, as

Since diseases directly related to undernutrition are the major public health problems of India, nutrition research in the country has been largely directed towards elucidating their causes and identifying the most feasible methods for their prevention and control. This effort is an interdisciplinary exercise carried out in the laboratory, the clinic, and the field, with close interaction among biochemists, clinicians, and epidemiologists. Some of the identified solutions have found practical application; but, as in other areas of scientific endeavor, a gap exists between the acquisition of kn

Malnutrition is a common accompaniment of gastrointestinal malignancy. The etiology of such malnutrition is multifactorial, but, when present, is a poor prognostic sign. Simple causes of decreased intake such as obstruction are readily overcome by distal enteral or parenteral feeding. Metabolic abnormalities that limit the efficacy of parenteral nutrition in such patients have been identified and, although not uniform, give further insight into the manner in which the host and the tumor partition energy and substrate. Widespread use of adjunctive parenteral nutrition in patients undergoing che

The reliability of skin testing to assess the nutritional state was evaluated in 257 patients who received total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The nutritional state was assessed by determining body composition, by multiple-isotope dilution. Immunocompetence was simultaneously evaluated by skin testing with five recall antigens. These measurements were carried out before and at two-week intervals during TPN. A statistically significant relationship existed between the response to skin testing and the nutritional state. A body composition consistent with malnutrition was present in the anergic pat

The nutritional status of the patient with cancer of the head and neck is subject to multiple stress. The nutritional status of such a patient is an admixture of the patient's personal hygiene, his or her neoplasm, the treatment of his or her neoplasm, and the complications of such treatment. It has been suggested the restoration of positive nitrogen balance through aggressive nutritional hyperalimentation will restore immunocompetence, enhance the clinical response to treatment, and reduce the frequency of complications. Despite this anecdotal data, controlled studies are needed to show that

The appropriate intake and metabolism of vitamins and minerals are critical to maintaining homeostasis. Imbalance in essential nutrients, either through dietary excess or deficiency or disorders in metabolism, can result in a spectrum of dermatologic and systemic manifestations. Certain nutrient deficiencies produce a characteristic pattern of cutaneous eruption. Recognition of these patterns is important, as they can alert the physician to an underlying nutritional disease. We review nutritional diseases involving zinc, biotin, essential fatty acids, vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), and riboflavin th

Wernicke's encephalopathy is a neurologic disorder due to a nutritional deficiency of thiamine, characterized by ocular palsies, ataxia, and altered mental activity. While Wernicke's encephalopathy is commonly attributed to alcoholism in the adult population, it has been described in children receiving prolonged parenteral nutrition and those with malignancies and AIDS. The disease, however, is rarely diagnosed in the pediatric population during life. We report a case of Wernicke's encephalopathy in a child with prolonged starvation and aim to improve awareness of a potentially fatal but treat
