BACKGROUND: Distal tibial fractures are challenging to manage owing to limited soft-tissue coverage and compromised blood supply. Minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) are among the widely used surgical options, but the optimal approach remains unclear. MIPO preserves periosteal blood flow with smaller incisions, while ORIF offers direct visualisation but increases soft-tissue damage. With growing comparative evidence, an updated evaluation of these techniques is necessary.
AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of MIPO versus ORIF in

Condylar fractures are the most common mandibular fractures, and a variety of open and closed approaches are used for repair, each with its own inherent risks and benefits. A 27-year-old man had a severely displaced and angulated high subcondylar fracture with anterior open bite deformity. The patient underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the condyle via a combined preauricular and intraoral approach as well as maxillomandibular fixation to repair his fracture. This combined approach allows the surgeon to maximize exposure while limiting risks of permanent injury from surgery.

PURPOSE: The management of fractures of the condyle of the mandible has been a topic of debate and still no consensus exists in the literature about the most appropriate approach. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the modified Blair approach for the open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular condyle fractures.
METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 18 patients with 20 mandibular condyle fractures from 2014 to 2020. All patients were treated surgically using the modified Blair approach. Postoperative occlusion status and mouth opening were

BACKGROUND: Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for unstable ankle fractures (AF) are relatively predictable with excellent outcomes. Rehabilitation strategies are still being debated after surgical intervention for AF: non-weight bearing and cast immobilization for six weeks after the surgical repair of unstable AF or early functional treatment with partial weight bearing. This study aimed to compare early weight bearing and functional outcomes and complications.
METHODS: Between April 2014 and March 2019, 1421 patients with AF underwent ORIF at 11 institutions (TRON group). The pati

Mandibular fractures are a common injury managed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Current open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) treatment strategies are based on Champy's ideal line of osteosynthesis with the use of miniplate and load-sharing fixation techniques. Postoperative instructions for the duration of a soft diet have varied. This prospective, randomised study reviewed the outcomes of a patient led return to diet at 2 weeks and 4 weeks compared with 6 weeks (control group) following an ORIF of mandibular fractures. There was no significant difference in the incidence of compli

OBJECTIVE: To develop a post-traumatic osteoarthritic model of hip following fracture of acetabulum in rabbit for revealing biochemical mechanism of post-traumatic osteoarthritis.
METHODS: A total of 36 mature male New Zealand white rabbits were equally divided into sham group (n = 12), non-ORIF group (n = 12), and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) group (n = 12). Except for the sham group, rabbits had survival surgeries to create acetabular fractures of dorsal wall for simulating dashboard impaction mechanism. The ORIF group received open reduction and internal fixation, while frac

INTRODUCTION: The superiority of primary arthrodesis (PA) versus open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in Lisfranc injuries has been debated. Meta-analyses comparing these surgical options have reached contradicting conclusions. The goal of this article is to determine why different conclusions were reached and provide clarity on the comparable outcomes of PA and ORIF in Lisfranc injuries.
METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted by searching for "meta-analysis" AND "Lisfranc" with keywords such as "ORIF" OR "open reduction" OR "arthrodesis" OR "fusion." Five meta-analysis

Following open reduction and internal fixation for a proximal humerus fracture a 71-year-old man re-presented with wound changes consistent with infection and elevated inflammatory markers. No significant improvement was seen with concomitant intravenous antibiotics and multiple debridement procedures. This case was further complicated by soft tissue breakdown at the site of a left thigh haematoma also requiring debridement. Surgical site infections represent the most common cause of morbidity postoperatively. This case highlights the importance of considering a number of differential diagnose

We present the case of an 11-year-old girl who was presented to the Emergency Department with right elbow pain and swelling following a fall. Radiography demonstrated intra-articular displacement of an avulsed medial epicondyle ossification centre, which was not readily identified at presentation. She proceeded to an uncomplicated open reduction and internal fixation.

The aim of our study was to compare the vertical fluoroscopic view of the wrist in extension and supination (ES) to the view in flexion and supination (FS) and determine which of the two views allowed the best visualization of four selected anatomical landmarks SDLR (radial styloid, dorsal radius cortex, Lister's tubercle and distal radioulnar joint). Our case series included 50 patients who had suffered a distal radius fracture and undergone an open reduction and internal fixation procedure with a volar locking plate. For each case, two fluoroscopic views were taken: ES (wrist extension and s

BACKGROUND: Although median nerve neuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are known complications of both untreated and acutely treated distal radius fracture, median neuropathy after correction of distal radius malunion is not commonly reported in hand surgery literature. We describe a patient with severe CTS after corrective osteotomy, open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with a volar locking plate (VLP), and bone grafting for distal radius malunion.
METHODS: We report a case of severe acute CTS as a complication of corrective osteotomy with bone grafting for distal radius malunion.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the treatment of fractures of the proximal fifth metatarsal at the junction of the metaphysis and diaphysis (i.e., Jones fracture) in diabetics. Open reduction and internal fixation with bone grafting resulted in clinical and radiographic union 8 weeks after surgery in patients treated with either immediate or delayed open reduction and internal fixation. Open reduction and internal fixation with autologous bone grafting is an effective treatment regimen in the diabetic patient with a Jones fracture. An initial trial of casting can be attempted without

Background Isolated distal ulna fractures are rare injuries and are commonly associated with distal radius fractures. Though most of them can be managed conservatively, few of them require open reduction due to the interposition of various structures. Case Description In this case report, we report two cases of irreducible isolated distal ulna fractures in adolescents due to the interposition of the extensor retinaculum with its underlying tendons requiring open reduction to achieve bony union and distal radioulnar joint stability. These distal ulna fractures can be best reduced by open redu

In athletes, a hook of hamate fracture is concerning in terms of time to return to sport and effect on performance upon return. This study aims to analyze the treatment of hook of hamate fractures in athletes to determine their rates of return to play, timelines of recovery, and performance level upon return to play. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to perform this analysis. The PubMed database was queried to perform the literature search. Data were pooled and analyzed. P values <.05 were considered significant. Data were anal

Lisfranc injuries were thought to primarily occur during high-energy events, leading to a preference for fusion treatment; however, recent data have shifted this perspective by highlighting a greater occurrence of low-energy injuries and reshaping the focus on open reduction internal fixation. This multifaceted process is guided by various factors, including the nature of the injury, specific anatomic considerations, and the involved joints. Our overarching goal remains to achieve anatomic reduction, with flexibility in hardware fixation methods. In cases of comminution, bridge plating may be

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus (SCH) fractures are common pediatric injuries, typically requiring closed reduction and percutaneous pinning or open reduction. These injuries are managed frequently by both pediatric-trained (PTOS) and nonpediatric-trained (NTOS) orthopaedic surgeons. However, some literature suggests that complications for pediatric injuries are lower when managed by PTOS. Therefore, this meta-analysis sought to compile existing literature comparing patients treated by PTOS and NTOS to better understand differences in management and clinical outcomes.
