Urethral sphincteric responses to sacral root stimulation.

Deafferentation and stimulation of sacral nerves in patients with complete spinal cord lesions is a good model to study the parasympathetic influence on urethral behavior. During intradural sacral deafferentation from S2 to S4/S5 in preparation for implantation of the Finetech-Brindley anterior sacral root stimulator, sacral roots were stimulated with 3 and 30 Hz and 3 and 10 V and the bladder and urethral responses noted. Stimulation of the posterior roots at 3 Hz gives a urethral relaxation without bladder contraction. At this frequency, anterior sacral root stimulation has no effect on blad

Neuromodulation of the crab pyloric central pattern generator by serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive afferents.

In the stomatogastric nervous system of the crab, Cancer borealis, a set of 4 serotonergic/cholinergic proprioceptive neurons, called gastropyloric receptor (GPR) cells, have effects on the pyloric motor pattern. In a semi-intact foregut preparation, the GPR cells are not activated by movements of the pyloric filter; instead they respond to the slower movements of the gastric mill (Katz et al., 1989). Thus, their activity is not synchronized to the pyloric motor pattern. However, when the GPR cells are stimulated in an in vitro preparation in a manner that resembles their normal firing pattern

Effects of anti-cholinergic and cholinergic drugs on habituation to motion in rats.

The effects of the anti-cholinergic drug scopolamine, an anti-motion sickness drug, and of the cholinergics physostigmine and neostigmine on habituation to motion sickness in rats were examined using pica, measured as eating of kaolin, as a behavioural index of motion sickness in rats. Rats were rotated around two axes for 1 h once a day for 10 or 11 days. Rotation-induced kaolin intake of control rats gradually decreased from day 9 of daily rotation. Test rats were not treated for the first 3 days, given drugs on days 4-7 of rotation and then again given no drugs for the next 3 or 4 days. Rot

Cholinergic cerebral vasodilatation: lack of involvement of cranial parasympathetic nerves.

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was estimated by measurement of internal carotid blood flow (ICBF) and sagittal sinus blood flow (SSBF) in mechanically ventilated rabbits under 70% N2O/30% O2. Electrical stimulation of cranial nerves III, VII, IX, or X, with stimulus parameters adequate to excite other visceromotor outflows of these nerves, failed to elicit change in CBF. Combined bilateral section of nerves VII, VIII, IX, X, and XI had no effect on the reactivity of CBF to CO2, nor did the sectioning of these nerves affect the increases in CBF induced by physostigmine. Division of the sinus and aor

Effect of parasympathetic decentralization and paracervical ganglion excision on reproductive function in the rat.

The uterine paracervical ganglion (Frankenhauser's ganglion) contains the terminal ganglion cells of the sacral parasympathetic system and, in some species, the short adrenergic system. Histochemical studies also show numerous chromaffin cells with morphologic attributes of interneurons. The present study explores the function of cell types present in this ganglion, by seeking changes in reproductive function following either parasympathetic decentralization (transection of the cauda equina) or excision of the ganglion itself. Two well-known reproductive phenomena were observed after each surg

Cholinergic nervous system and immediate hypersensitivity. II. An analysis of pupillary responses.

We studied the pupillary responses of various subjects to carbamylcholine chloride (CCC) in order to assess cholinergic responsiveness. Using the concentration of topical CCC required to induce greater than or equal to 1 mm miosis in the dark as the end point, we compared the responses of five groups of subjects: normal controls; patients with allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, or intrinsic asthma; and a group who had reproducibly positive skin tests in the absence of symptoms. Subjects with allergic rhinitis or allergic asthma were significantly more sensitive than were normal controls. The

The heart rate recovery is impaired in participants with premature ejaculation.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is one of the most common sexual disorders in men. Excessive activity of the sympathetic nervous system is consid … with the control group (p < .05 for all). Common factors that affect equilibrium of sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems may be involved in the PE and abnormal HRR etiopathogenesis. The cause-and-effect relationship can be more clearly demonstrated with large-scale, prospective studies.

Oral lichen planus and neurogenic inflammation: new observations and therapeutic implications from four clinical cases.

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a usually chronic and relapsing mucocutaneous disease with unknown etiology. Immunosuppressive treatment is sometimes unsatisfactory. We describe four cases of reticular OLP localized on the internal side of cheek, in the territory innervated by sensory free endings of the buccinator nerve, poorly responding to immunosuppressive treatment (topical/systemic corticosteroids, topical cyclosporin). Addition of prazepam 10 mg/day to standard therapy achieved significant improvement and clinical healing in 30-40 days. Because of the complex interplay between the nervous a

[Dysautonomic features in patients with Cuban type 2 spinocerebellar ataxia].

INTRODUCTION: Dysautonomic features are the clinical signs and symptoms derived from anomalous functioning of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous systems in either the peripheral or central parts. OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical features related to dysautonomia in a patient with spinocerebellar ataxia with severe functional disability. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied a series of cases, including 21 patients with severe disability (confirmed to their bed or wheelchair, unable to walk and totally or partly dependent on other people for essential everyday activities). The patients a…

Autonomic nervous system in acute kidney injury.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a rapid loss of kidney function resulting in accumulation of end metabolic products and associated abnormalities in fluid, electrolyte and acid-base homeostasis. The pathophysiology of AKI is complex and multifactorial involving numerous vascular, tubular and inflammatory pathways. Neurohumoral activation with heightened activity of the sympathetic nervous system and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system play a critical role in this scenario. Inflammation and/or local renal ischaemia are underlying mechanisms triggering renal tissue hypoxia and resultant renal micro

Alterations in cardiac autonomic control in spinal cord injury.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) interferes with the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The effect on the cardiovascular system will depend on the extent of damage to the spinal/central component of ANS. The cardiac changes are caused by loss of supraspinal sympathetic control and relatively increased parasympathetic cardiac control. Decreases in sympathetic activity result in heart rate and the arterial blood pressure changes, and may cause arrhythmias, in particular bradycardia, with the risk of cardiac arrest in those with cervical or high thoracic injuries. The objective of this review is to give a

The role of the autonomic nervous system in hypertension: a bond graph model study.

A bond graph model of the cardiovascular system with embedded autonomic nervous regulation was developed for a better understanding of the role of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) in hypertension. The model is described by a pump model of the heart and a detailed representation of the head and neck, pulmonary, coronary, abdomen and extremity circulation. It responds to sympathetic and parasympathetic activities by modifying systemic peripheral vascular resistance, heart rate, ventricular end-systolic elastance and venous unstressed volumes. The impairment of ANS is represented by an elevatio

Effectiveness of newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) index for guiding intraoperative fentanyl administration in children under 2 years: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Assessing pain in infants and neonates is challenging due to their inability to communicate verbally. While validated subjective tools exist, they rely on interpreting the child's behavior, leading to potential inconsistencies and underestimation of pain. Based on heart rate variability, the newborn infant parasympathetic evaluation (NIPE) index offers a more objective approach to pain assessment in children under 2 years. Although promising, research on its effectiveness during surgery under general anesthesia remains limited and inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: This study compared the e

Parasympathetic Response Patterns are Associated with Metabolic Syndrome Among Older Women but Not Men.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of physiological stress responses in metabolic syndrome (MetS). PURPOSE: To examine whether patterns of autonomic response to psychological stress are associated with MetS and whether this association is moderated by sex. METHODS: 1121 men and women (Mage = 65.3 ± 6.77 years) with and without coronary artery disease (CAD) underwent an anger recall stressor task. Heart rate and heart-rate variability (HRV; HF, LF/HF) were assessed. Clusters of participants showing similar patterns of response across baseline, stress, and recovery periods were created

The frontal cortex is a heart-brake: Reduction in delta oscillations is associated with heart rate deceleration.

Prefrontal brain regions have been proposed to modulate vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) through their action on subcortical structures. This study aimed at investigating the beat-to-beat influence of the brain cortex over the heart through a high temporal resolution estimation of brain-heart coupling. Electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) from 32 scalp positions were recorded at rest for 5 min in 38 participants. To assess beat-to-beat cortical control on vagal activity, the longest and shortest inter-beat intervals (IBIs) were identified for each participant. Th
