Diurnal Variation of Visual Acuity and Refraction in Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy.

PURPOSE: Patients with advanced Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy frequently report poor vision in the morning, which improves as the day progresses. This study quantified the amount of variation in near and distance visual acuity and refraction over the course of a day. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study. Best-corrected distance visual acuity and near visual acuity were tested in participants with clinically advanced Fuchs dystrophy and in controls with healthy corneas. Subjective refraction and autorefraction were conducted in a presumed steady state in the afternoon. Measuremen

Baseline characteristics and progression of neovascular age-related macular degeneration in patients receiving over 60 intravitreal injections of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor.

Objective: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in older populations of industrialized countries. Antibody-based therapy inhibiting the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been very successful in the treatment of the neovascular form of AMD. This retrospective clinical study investigates the baseline characteristics and progression of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in patients who received over 60 anti-VEGF intravitreal injections. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 6812 eyes of 5678 patients undergoing anti-VEGF treatment at

Spontaneous Late Visual Recovery in Pediatric Central Retinal Artery Occlusion: A Case Report and Literature Review.

The authors report a rare case of pediatric central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and spontaneous late recovery, with associated literature review. A retrospective review of patient medical records and literature search of four relevant databases was conducted. A 7-year-old girl with sudden, painless loss of vision in her right eye was referred to the authors' center where she was found to have a CRAO with hand motion visual acuity. One month later, the patient developed multiple retinal hemorrhages throughout the fundus. Despite undergoing extensive investigations, a cause for her condition

Recovery of visual field defects following vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy: A case report.

RATIONALE: Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) may lead to severe visual impairment, and visual field (VF) loss in such patients has been reported. Vitrectomy is performed in PDR cases complicated with either vitreous hemorrhage or tractional retinal detachment to restore their visual acuity. However, its effect on VF defects is limited in data. Herein, we report the recovery of VF defects following vitrectomy in a patient with PDR. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 25-year-old female with bilateral PDR and vitreous hemorrhage received 2 monthly intravitreal injections of aflibercept in both eyes. Six

Medical management of acute loss of vision in tuberculous meningitis: A case report.

Blindness and vision impairment are unpredictable complications of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) that are often unrecognized in the acute stages of illness due to inability to assess vision in patients with depressed levels of consciousness or confusion. We present a patient with definite TBM confirmed by positive Xpert MTB/RIF assay of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) who developed binocular blindness two weeks after diagnosis and initiation of standard anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT). Ophthalmological exam demonstrated complete bilateral abducens nerve palsies, impaired pupillary responses to ligh

Clinical application of the multifocal visual evoked potential.

BACKGROUND: Measures of visual function thresholds such as visual acuity and visual fields are generally dependent on subjective responses and assume maintenance of fixation, attention and motivation. In the young, elderly, cognitively impaired or malingering populations, such measures may be inaccurate or difficult to obtain. The Visual Evoked Response Imaging System (VERIS) has been claimed to give more objective topographic recordings of retinal and cortical function. This paper aims to explore the adequacy of this technique in four unusual, unrelated, clinically difficult cases. METHODS:
