PFAS exposure during pregnancy: Implications for placental health and functioning.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies have linked prenatal poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposures with impaired placental structure and function. In humans, only few studies have investigated such associations. OBJECTIVE: We studied whether PFAS, individually and as a mixture, affected placental function. METHODS: In 367 pregnant women, we quantified 13 PFAS in serum collected at 19.3 gestational weeks (median). Placental weight was recorded at delivery. Histological examination of placental tissues allowed estimation of vascular perfusion (percentage of villi with syncytial knots, capill

Development and validation of a deep neural network for predicting coronary heart disease in hypertensive patients using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early identification of high-risk hypertensive patients is crucial for preventing cardiovascular events. While traditional risk scores rely on static clinical measurements, 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM)-derived time in target range (TTR) captures dynamic blood pressure control patterns that may improve risk stratification. Machine learning methods, particularly deep neural networks, offer an enhanced capability to model complex non-linear relationships in high-dimensional c

Geographic authentication of premium tobacco extracts using machine learning models trained on LC-HRMS fingerprints.

INTRODUCTION: The geographic origin of premium tobacco extracts fundamentally shapes their sensory profiles and commercial value, but authenticating these complex matrices remains a formidable analytical challenge. Conventional nontargeted analysis workflows typically rely on a minute fraction of structurally annotated metabolites, thereby discarding the vast majority of unannotated yet highly specific chemical markers. To address this limitation, this study introduces a geographic authentication framework utilizing machine learning models trained on characteristic ion feature (CIF) fingerprin

Recent advancements in feature extraction and classification based bone cancer detection - a systematic review.

Cancer is a deadly disease that occurs due to the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. Bone cancer is the third most occurring disease; approximately 10,000 patients suffer from bone cancer in India annually. It can lead to death if not diagnosed in the earlier stage. Bone cancer occurs in four stages as follows: in stage 1 cancer does not spread to other bone parts, in stage 2 cancer looks similar to stage 1 but becomes dangerous, in stage 3 cancer spreads to one or two bone parts and in stage 4 cancer spreads to other body parts. Timely diagnosis of bone cancer is challenging due to the un

Cross-national predictive correlates of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults with chronic conditions: an explainable machine learning analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rapid population aging has made depression among middle-aged and older adults an increasingly important public health concern. Although numerous risk factors have been identified, an integrative framework for clarifying how these risks are structured across sociocultural contexts remains lacking. Identifying cross-nationally stable vulnerability signals is therefore important for improving screening and prevention. This study aimed to identify cross-nationally stable and context-specific predictive correlates of depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults with at least o
