What can saliency models predict about eye movements? Spatial and sequential aspects of fixations during encoding and recognition.

Saliency map models account for a small but significant amount of the variance in where people fixate, but evaluating these models with natural stimuli has led to mixed results. In the present study, the eye movements of participants were recorded while they viewed color photographs of natural scenes in preparation for a memory test (encoding) and when recognizing them later. These eye movements were then compared to the predictions of a well defined saliency map model (L. Itti & C. Koch, 2000), in terms of both individual fixation locations and fixation sequences (scanpaths). The saliency mod

"Sequence Agnosia" in Bálint's syndrome: defects in visuotemporal processing after bilateral parietal damage.

Bálint's syndrome is characterized by visuospatial dysfunction, with failure to attend to multiple objects in space and poor spatial localization manifested as impaired reaching and saccadic targeting. Less investigated in this disorder is perceptual processing along the dimension of time. We studied the performance of a patient with Bálint's syndrome on two oddity paradigms in which she had to indicate which of three objects was different in color, shape, or structure. Her initial difficulty with processing multiple objects present simultaneously in different locations recovered, but she had

Face affect recognition deficits in personality-disordered offenders: association with psychopathy.

BACKGROUND: There is a limited literature examining face affect recognition in offenders. In line with the Integrated Emotion Systems (IES) model, existing studies suggest a psychopathy-related deficit in sad/fear recognition. However, many of these studies have small samples, and few include a healthy control group in order to examine the contribution of criminality. METHOD: We compared the performance of male criminals with dissocial (antisocial) personality disorder (PD group) and healthy male IQ-matched controls, on a morphed face affect-processing task and examined the relationship betwe

The impact of processing load on emotion.

This event-related fMRI study examined the impact of processing load on the BOLD response to emotional expressions. Participants were presented with composite stimuli consisting of neutral and fearful faces upon which semi-transparent words were superimposed. This manipulation held stimulus-driven features constant across multiple levels of processing load. Participants made either (1) gender discriminations based on the face; (2) case judgments based on the words; or (3) syllable number judgments based on the words. A significant main effect for processing load was revealed in prefrontal cort

Acquired dyslexia in a Turkish-English speaker.

The Turkish script is characterised by completely transparent bidirectional mappings between orthography and phonology. To date, there has been no reported evidence of acquired dyslexia in Turkish speakers leading to the naïve view that reading and writing problems in Turkish are probably rare. We examined the extent to which phonological impairment and orthographic transparency influence reading disorders in a native Turkish speaker. BRB is a bilingual Turkish-English speaker with deep dysphasia accompanied by acquired dyslexia in both languages. The main findings are an effect of imageabilit

Propulsion patterns and pushrim biomechanics in manual wheelchair propulsion.

OBJECTIVES: To classify stroke patterns of manual wheelchair users and to determine if different patterns of propulsion lead to different biomechanics. DESIGN: Case series. SETTING: Biomechanics laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-eight individuals with paraplegia who use manual wheelchairs for mobility. INTERVENTION: Subjects propelled their own wheelchair on a dynamometer at 2 different steady state speeds. Bilateral biomechanical data were obtained by using a force and moment sensing pushrim and a motion analysis system. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The propulsive stroke of each participant for

Visual language and handwriting movement: functional magnetic resonance imaging at 3 tesla during generation of ideographic characters.

A functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment at 3 tesla was performed to investigate the collaborative mechanism between visuospatial processing and motor execution in performing visual language generation tasks. Japanese Kanji, ideographic characters, were utilized to design tasks. The bilateral border portions between the inferior parietal lobule and the occipital lobe were involved during a Kanji puzzle task, which required subjects to combine several parts into a Kanji. The higher motor areas, such as the premotor areas and the pre-supplementary motor areas, were also activated bilat

Covert recognition in acquired and developmental prosopagnosia.

BACKGROUND: Some patients with prosopagnosia have covert recognition, meaning that they retain some familiarity or knowledge of facial identity of which they are not aware. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that prosopagnosic patients with right occipitotemporal lesions and impaired face perception lack covert processing, whereas patients with associative prosopagnosia and bilateral anterior temporal lesions possess it. METHODS: Eight patients with prosopagnosia were tested with a battery of four face recognition tests to determine their ability to discriminate between famous and unknown fac

Role of visual attention in cognitive control of oculomotor readiness in students with reading disabilities.

This study investigated eye movement and comprehension therapy in Grade 6 children with reading disabilities (RD). Both order of therapy and type of therapy were examined. Furthermore, the implications of visual attention in ameliorating reading disability are discussed. Thirty-one students with RD were identified using standardized reading comprehension tests. Eye movements were analyzed objectively using an infra-red recording device. Reading scores of participating children were 0.5 to 1 SD below the national mean. Testing took place before the start of therapy (T1) and was repeated after 1

Influence of drive and timing mechanisms on breathing pattern and ventilation during mental task performance.

Assessment of multiple respiratory measures may provide insight into how behavioral demands affect the breathing pattern. This is illustrated by data from a study among 44 subjects, in which tidal volume, respiration rate, minute ventilation and indices of central drive and timing mechanisms were assessed via inductive plethysmography, in addition to end-tidal PCO2. After a baseline, three conditions of a memory comparison task were presented. The first two conditions differed only with regard to the presence or absence of feedback of performance (NFB and FB). In the third 'all-or-nothing' (AO

Test-retest reliability of colored filter testing.

This article evaluates the reliability of colored filter testing procedures. Properly chosen colored filters, with the tint being specific to each patient, are said to be effective in the treatment of dyslexia. We investigated the test-retest reliability of colored filter testing in relationship to two specific symptom levels using a forced-choice test procedure. This research was to evaluate test-retest reliability, not the validity of colored filter testing. Forty-one participants (28 boys and 13 girls) ranging in age from 15 to 17 years served as participants. Two tests, separated by 2 week

A neurological dissociation between shape from shading and shape from edges.

We studied the ability of a neurological patient, who has deficits in various aspects of form perception, to perform region segregation tasks requiring discriminations based on several image properties that are related to the three-dimensional structure of objects. The patient could discriminate the apparent three-dimensional structure and orientation of shapes defined by shading gradients, but could not make such discriminations for shapes in which edges were depicted as lines or as luminance discontinuities. These results suggest that the neural pathways that compute shape from shading gradi

Pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency impairs object recognition in rats.

Pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD) in rats is used to model the etiology, diencephalic neuropathology, and memory deficits of Korsakoff's amnesia. We assessed the performance of rats exposed to PTD on a test of object recognition--nonrecurring-items delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS). PTD produced thalamic lesions similar to those of Korsakoff's amnesics and similar to those previously observed in PTD rats. PTD rats required more trials to master DNMS at a 4-s retention delay than did controls, and after they had done so, they performed more poorly than controls at delays of 15,

Effects of attention on visuomotor activity in the premotor and prefrontal cortex of a primate.

We examined neuronal activity in the primate premotor (PM) and prefrontal (PF) areas during a demanding spatial matching task. On each behavioral trial, a rhesus monkey moved its forelimb when a visual stimulus, called the "prime stimulus," reappeared at a previously cued location. Because it triggered a movement, the part of space cued by the prime stimulus had to be either remembered or attended during the time between prime stimulus presentations. Between the first and second appearances of the prime stimulus, behaviorally irrelevant visual stimuli could appear at one or several locations o

Brain asymmetry and human electrodermal conditioning.

Two experiments are reviewed that demonstrate effects of brain laterality on human classical conditioning. Pictures of facial emotional expressions were used as conditioned stimuli (CSs) together with shock as unconditioned stimulus (UCS). Bilateral electrodermal responses were recorded as dependent measures. In the first experiment, one group was conditioned to an angry face, and one group to a happy face. During extinction, the face-CSs were presented to the right hemisphere on half of the trials and to the left hemisphere on the other half of the trials. Results showed that the right hemisp

Symptoms of prosopagnosia in intoxicated subjects.

Two experiments were made to test whether a blood ethanol concentration of about 1 g ethanol per kg blood influences the ability to recognize faces which were shown 24 hours earlier. 18 subjects who saw the faces for the first time when sober and whose task it was to recognize the faces when under the influence of alcohol, recognized the faces significantly less frequently than controls. The controls saw the faces for the first time when sober and their task was to recognize the faces later when also in a sober state. When 20 sober subjects had to recognize faces which they had seen 24 hours e

[Follow-up of HIV infected patients with reduced pattern ERG].

We have recently reported a reduction of pattern electroretinogram (p-ERG) in patients with HIV infection. Amplitudes were reduced in HIV-infected patients with microangiopathy, but also in some cases with normal fundus. These findings suggested the existence of diffuse defects in ganglionic cell activity in HIV-infected patients. We have now started a prospective follow-up study in order to pursue the development of (a) p-ERG amplitudes and (b) funduscopic changes and visual acuity in these patients. In patients with normal fundus or microangiopathy who did not develop cytomegalovirus (CMV) r

Selection of moving and static objects for the control of spatially directed action.

Research studying visual selective attention has largely examined filtering tasks in which stationary targets are selected from stationary distractors by a physical cue such as location and identity is the reported attribute. During many interactions with the visual environment however, target stimuli are selected by what they are, whereas action is controlled by where the stimulus is located. This study demonstrates that the interference and negative priming effects observed in standard filtering tasks, which suggest that distractors are analyzed and subsequently inhibited during selection, a

Rate variables and automatized naming in developmental dyslexia.

The rate variable in rapid automatized naming (RAN) was investigated in 50 adolescent and 40 adult students with developmental dyslexia, in matched normal controls, and in learning-disabled students without reading difficulties. Visual stimuli depicting familiar colors and common objects were presented in isolation at three film speeds and three exposure times. Film speed and exposure time contributed as independent variables to error rate; and dyslexic subjects of both age groups made significantly more naming errors than controls. Dyslexic subjects also responded with longer naming latencies

Memory functioning during the first year after closed head injury in children and adolescents.

Effects of the severity of closed head injury (CHI) on verbal learning and memory and visual recognition memory were studied at base line and on a 1-year follow-up examination in 58 pediatric admissions sampled from three age ranges, 6-8, 9-12, and 13-15 years. Within each age range, recovery of memory was compared in patients with mild to moderate CHI and survivors of severe injury. Consistent with previous findings obtained in head-injured children sampled from a wide age range, the present study confirms that memory deficit persists at least 1 year after severe CHI. Impairment of visual rec
