Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and medications for opioid use disorder for persons who inject drugs: the CHORUS + randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases among people who inject drugs increased during the US overdose crisis. Although HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) decreases HIV acquisition, and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) reduce overdose deaths, uptake remains suboptimal. The CHORUS + study will test the efficacy of a comprehensive peer recovery coaching intervention to increase PrEP and MOUD initiation and adherence. METHODS: This two-arm RCT will enroll 284 people who inject opioids (PWIO) and are negative for HIV from two sites. Participants randomized to the CHORUS +

Understanding Mechanisms that Maintain Social Anxiety Disorder in Autistic Individuals Through the Clark and Wells (1995) Model and Beyond: A Systematic Review.

Given the high co-occurrence of social anxiety in autism, no reviews to date have explored how cognitive and behavioural mechanisms identified to maintain social anxiety in non-autistic individuals may operate in autistic individuals. This systematic review evaluated: (1) empirical evidence underlying the Clark and Wells (1995) Cognitive Model of Social Anxiety in autistic individuals; (2) how vulnerability factors identified from autism literature (beyond core autistic traits) may be associated with social anxiety beyond the cognitive model. Published peer-reviewed English articles until 27th

Nurses' perspectives on the provision of self-care management education to patients with heart failure: A qualitative study at Cardiac Hospital, Dar es Salaam Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Patients' education along with a motivation for developing self-care management skills is an essential component in the management of heart failure(HF). Self-care management education has been practiced by nurses in many hospitals. However, there is inadequate evidence for the provision of self-care management education in low-income countries including Tanzania. Lack of self-care management education to patients with HF during discharge is the most common reason for re-admission to hospitals. AIM: This study aimed to explore nurses' perspectives focusing on facilitators and barri

Impact of HIV knowledge and stigma on the uptake of HIV testing - Results from a community-based participatory research survey among migrants from sub-Saharan Africa in Germany.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, 3,674 new HIV diagnoses were notified in Germany; 16% of those newly diagnosed cases originated from sub-Saharan Africa (sSA). One quarter of the newly diagnosed cases among migrants from sSA (MisSA) are notified as having acquired the HIV infection in Germany. In order to reach MisSA with HIV testing opportunities, we aimed to identify which determinants influence the uptake of HIV testing among MisSA in Germany. METHODS: To identify those determinants, we conducted a quantitative cross-sectional survey among MisSA in Germany. The survey was designed in a participatory p

Analyzing the impact of social factors on homelessness: a fuzzy cognitive map approach.

BACKGROUND: The forces which affect homelessness are complex and often interactive in nature. Social forces such as addictions, family breakdown, and mental illness are compounded by structural forces such as lack of available low-cost housing, poor economic conditions, and insufficient mental health services. Together these factors impact levels of homelessness through their dynamic relations. Historic models, which are static in nature, have only been marginally successful in capturing these relationships. METHODS: Fuzzy Logic (FL) and fuzzy cognitive maps (FCMs) are particularly suited to

Participation Patterns, Family Routines and Environmental Factors Prior to Pediatric Psychiatric Hospitalization.

Children admitted to psychiatric wards often experience limited participation in daily activities vital for development. This cross-sectional study compared participation in home and community settings among hospitalized children (HC) with those with neurodevelopmental disorders (ND) and typically developing peers (TD). The study involved 141 parents using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth and the Family Routines Inventory. Occupational therapists completed the Short Child Occupational Profile following a visit to the HC homes. Results showed significantly lower

Mental illness and personal recovery: A narrative identity framework.

This article presents a metamorphic model to describe the manifold role of narrative identity, a person's internal life story, across the course of mental illness and personal recovery. First, early adversity and negative co-authoring may contribute to the development of a fragile life story, which itself may combine with life stressors to increase the likelihood of mental illness. Second, mental illness may negatively impact the development of narrative identity, which in turn may exacerbate the devastating effects of mental illness on daily functioning. Finally, positive changes in narrative

Self-Efficacy for Interprofessional Experiential Learning Through an International Service Trip: A Mixed-Methods Study.

This pilot mixed-methods educational study examines the impact of interprofessional experiential learning on self-efficacy during a service trip to Guatemala. Participants were recruited from occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech pathology programs at a university. They engaged in a 9-day international interprofessional learning service trip. They completed pre- and post-surveys with open-ended questions to measure and reflect on the impact of their service trip on self-efficacy. Nine of 14 traveling students completed both pre- and post-trip surveys. Confidence in both interprofe

The Association of Quality of Life with Psychosocial Factors in Adolescents with Tourette Syndrome.

Individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS) have poorer quality of life (QoL) than their peers, yet factors contributing to poor QoL in this population remain unclear. Research to date has predominantly focused on the impact of tics and psychiatric symptoms on QoL in TS samples. The aim of this cross-sectional, multi-informant study was to identify psychosocial variables that may impact adolescent QoL in TS. Thirty-eight adolescents aged 13 to 17 with TS and 28 age-matched controls participated with a caregiver. No group differences were found on QoL, although the TS group reported reduced QoL com

"They either leave you or they get involved in it": Familial factors influencing drug use amongst Appalachian people.

West Virginia, the only state entirely in Appalachia, is considered the epicenter of the opioid crisis. Children raised in families affected by opioid use disorder can develop their own substance use disorder later in life. The continuing opioid crisis coupled with social and health disparities suggest families in West Virginia are vulnerable to generational cycles of substance misuse. This qualitative study uses content analysis to present emergent themes discerned from participant interviews on the opioid epidemic and impacts of a restrictive opioid prescribing law in West Virginia. Self-concept, creativity and developmental dyslexia in university students: Effects of age of assessment.

Educational experiences often influence self-concept. Thus, readers with dyslexia can have low self-esteem and self-efficacy, and perceive themselves as less intelligent than their peers. They may develop creativity to succeed despite their difficulties but findings are inconsistent and rarely consider the effect of age of assessment on self-perception. This study included 145 university students (Mage = 24.43 years), 72 with dyslexia; of these, 53% had been assessed in childhood (Mage = 11.89 years), 47% in adulthood (Mage = 27.38 years). A survey assessed self-esteem, self-efficacy, creativi

When Does Co-Rumination Facilitate Depression Contagion in Adolescent Friendships? Investigating Intrapersonal and Interpersonal Factors.

Research supports the notion that adolescents' mental health is impacted by peers via contagion processes. A growing area of interest has been how co-rumination may influence depressive symptoms within friendships. The current study examined particular conditions under which co-rumination is especially likely to facilitate depression contagion. Participants were adolescents (N = 480, 49% female, M age = 14.6 years, 59.5% European American) paired in friendship dyads and assessed over 9 months. Characteristics of the adolescent (personal distress), of the friend (excessive reassurance seeking),

Early adversity, hypocortisolism, and behavior problems at school entry: A study of internationally adopted children.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is influenced by early life adversity; however, less is known about the potential for recovery following marked improvements in care. The present study examined longitudinal changes in children's cortisol reactivity in the laboratory (4 assessments over 2 years) after adoption. Post-institutionalized (N=65) and post-foster care children (N=49) demonstrated blunted reactivity relative to non-adopted peers (N=53). Furthermore, post-institutionalized children exhibited no evidence of expected adaptation to repeated sessions in the 2 years following ad
