Predicting multiple mental health outcomes in adolescents using explainable machine learning models.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, and stress, are an increasing public health concern, yet the factors associated with different mental health outcomes may vary across domains. This study investigated shared and outcome-specific predictive features of depression, anxiety, perceived stress, and psychological well-being using explainable machine learning models. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,088 adolescents aged 13-18 years recruited from secondary schools in Wuhan, China, using multistage cluster sampling. Participants comp

Daily academic and sport-related strain and mental-health-related states among university students in sport-related majors: a 14-day ecological momentary assessment network study.

University students enrolled in sport-related majors may simultaneously manage academic requirements and regular training or competition, yet the short-term organization of their physical, academic/performance-related, affective, and cognitive states remains insufficiently understood. This study used a 14-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) design with three smartphone assessments per day and multilevel vector autoregressive modeling. The original recruitment pool included 72 students from one university in Chongqing, China. Five participants were excluded for repeated responses outside

Predicting Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in Adult Men Based on Nutritional and Lifestyle Variables: A Comparative Analysis of Machine Learning Methods.

Mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) are rising globally. Understanding how diet and lifestyle influence these conditions is vital for targeted interventions. This study explores the potential of machine learning (ML) to identify key risk factors and improve mental health predictions in adult males. This cross-sectional study gathered dietary data from 400 adult males using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The dataset contained 59 predictor variables, and DAS was classified as either normal or indicative of some degree of disorder. The predictive performanc

Stress, Anxiety, and Depression in the First-year Students of Medical Education: A Prospective Cohort Study from a Women's Medical College in South India.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Medical students around the world have been found to have high rates of depression and anxiety as compared to the general population. This study aimed to assess these in medical students immediately after they joined medical school and six months later. This study also aimed to assess if there was any association with stress, anxiety, and depression scores at six months follow-up with coping styles, self-esteem, personality, family functioning, and academic performance. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We enrolled 154 first-year undergraduate medical students in this study with a b

Abbreviated assessment of psychopathology in patients with suspected seizure disorders.

PURPOSE: Psychopathology is common in patients undergoing investigation for seizure-related disorders. Psychometric examination using self-report instruments, such as the Symptom Checklist 90 - Revised (SCL-90-R), can assist diagnosis. The SCL-90-R, however, is a lengthy instrument and might not be tolerated by all patients. We assessed several abbreviated forms of the SCL-90-R in patients undergoing video encephalographic monitoring (VEM). METHOD: Six hundred eighty-seven patients completed the SCL-90-R, and scores were computed for the full SCL-90-R and five abbreviated forms. Correlations

Effect of serotonin uptake inhibitors in anxiety disorders; a double-blind comparison of clomipramine and fluvoxamine.

A double-blind comparative study of clomipramine and fluvoxamine was performed in 50 patients suffering from anxiety disorders (DSM-III). Patients were treated for 6 weeks with either 150 mg of clomipramine or 100 mg of fluvoxamine. The results show that both drugs at the dosages used are equipotent in reducing anxiety symptoms as assessed with the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Clomipramine differed from fluvoxamine in its efficacy with respect to associated depressive symptomatology in that it had a more pronounced effect on the Self Rating Depressi

Virtual reality to reduce periprocedural anxiety during invasive coronary angiography: rationale and design of the VR InCard trial.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing invasive coronary angiography (ICA) experience anxiety due to various reasons. Procedural anxiety can lead to physiological and psychological complications, compromising patient comfort and overall procedural outcomes. Benzodiazepines are commonly used to reduce periprocedural anxiety, although the effect is modest. Virtual reality (VR) is a promising non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety in patients undergoing ICA. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A single-centre open-label randomised controlled trial is conducted assessing the effectiveness of add-on VR t

Striosome-Like Structural Connectivity Is Reduced in the Rostral Putamen in Anxiety Disorder.

Anxiety disorders affect roughly a third of adults, and treatment of anxiety-related symptoms costs more than any other mental health condition. Symptoms often begin in adolescence and are usually lifelong. Identifying shared neuroanatomical features of anxiety is essential for understanding its causes and improving treatments. Developmental abnormalities in the striatum, an obligate node in cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical networks, could predispose to the diverse symptoms of anxiety. The striatum is comprised of two interdigitated tissue compartments, striosome and matrix, that have differen

Are children really more creative than adults? A mixed-methods examination of creative performance and experience.

It is widely believed that children are more creative than adults, yet direct empirical tests of this assumption are scarce. A qualitative pre-study indicated that creativity is commonly attributed to preschoolers and associated with intrinsically motivated engagement, informing the design of the main study. 92 preschool children and 70 adults completed a divergent thinking task and two drawing tasks varying in structure (free vs. goal-directed). Independent raters evaluated all products for novelty, effectiveness, and overall creativity; participants reported motivation, enjoyment, confidence

Recent Insight Into the Subtypes of Social Anxiety Disorder.

Systems for subtyping individuals with social anxiety disorder have been the focus of much research attention as a means to improve assessment and treatment of the disorder. This article highlights recent revisions to social anxiety disorder (SAD) subtypes from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) to DSM-V, reviewing empirical evidence that served as the impetus for the revisions. Recent research examining the validity of the DSM-V system and alternative subtyping systems is reviewed. Overall, there appears to be greater empirical support for a dim

Behaviour changes in a transgenic model of Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder, caused by an expanded polyglutamine region of a protein called huntingtin with unknown function. Transgenic mice expressing the N-terminal of huntingtin, containing 82 glutamines, exhibit a progressive disorder, which resembles to the human disease. In this study, we tested the longitudinal behaviour changes in this transgenic line in open-field and elevated-plus-maze tests. The motor performance deteriorated at 12 weeks of age and the disease progressed as indicated by the decreased total distance covered, the decreased mean ve

Panic patients in the non-panic state: physiological and cognitive dysfunction.

Panic attacks and the antipanic effect of antidepressants are claimed to distinguish panic disorder (PD) from generalised anxiety disorder. However, most studies showing neurochemical disturbances in PD overlook the non-panic state. We compared panic patients in the non-panic state with controls on biochemical, psychological and physiological measures. There were no differences on the neuroendocrine tests. Self-ratings of bodily and psychological symptoms of anxiety were significantly higher in patients and they scored worse on word recall. Patients had significantly more skin conductance fluc

Seizure forecasting: The long and winding road to clinical translation.

Seizure forecasting has progressed from theoretical aspiration to a rapidly advancing research domain, yet clinical translation remains limited. Over the past decades, advances in algorithm development, chronic electroencephalography (EEG), wearable sensors, and the characterization of seizure cycles have demonstrated that seizure risk is not random but fluctuates according to identifiable biological rhythms and patient-specific patterns. Forecasting algorithms have shown promising performance across diverse retrospective datasets, including intracranial EEG, subscalp recordings, wearable phys
