Primary peritonitis and meningitis in nephrotic syndrome in Riyadh.

Primary peritonitis among children with the nephrotic syndrome is increasing following a decline when antibiotics and steroids were introduced. Meningitis has not been reported in such patients. Six nephrotic children with primary peritonitis and two with pneumococcal meningitis are reported. Peritonitis occurred in relapsing long standing cases while meningitis occurred in recently diagnosed cases. Steroid therapy was not found to be a contributing factor in the causation of the septic episodes. Long standing ascites was not a precursor to the development of peritonitis. All cases had hypopro…

[The "open abdomen" method of treatment of postoperative peritonitis].

The authors stress the therapeutical difficulties encountered in patients with severe postoperative peritonitis, necessitating multiple interventions for the solution of viscero-peritoneal problems, and of the abdominal wall. The authors' personal experience is presented with the method of the "opened abdomen", which is applied abroad under the improper name of "coeliostomy". The authors describe their procedure, and also describe a complementary method, of the socalled "semi-open abdomen", which is in fact a narrowing of the surgical wound with threads of inxodable wire. Four of six patients …

[Results of continuous permanent irrigation in diffuse purulent peritonitis].

In a prospective study continuous peritoneal lavage was carried out in 30 patients with diffuse purulent or fecal peritonitis using a volume of 20-50 1/24 h during 5-7 days. Bacteria were recognised in the effusate until day 5. Protein losses per 24 hours amounted to 4,1-46 g. A mean value of 14,5 +/- 14 g was determined. The fractional protein clearance of IgG had increased compared to other proteins. A mortality of 26,7% was obtained. Death causes were the consequences of septic shock. In none of the investigated cases remaining empyemas in the peritoneal cavity could be shown. There was no …

[Prevention of suppurative complications of appendiceal peritonitis (author's transl)].

The high incidence and severity of suppurative complications consecutive to appendiceal rupture in children can justify this review. Mixed colonic flora, with a predominance of "E. coli" among and "B. fragilis" among anaerobes, is constantly recovered from the original purulent exudate as well as from that of suppurative complications. It seems therefore wise to complete surgical treatment with an adequate early antibiotic association direction to the particular flora. Gentamycin and Clindamycin seem to fulfill satisfactorily these requirement. On the contrary, peritoneal irrigation either wit

Spontaneous peritonitis due to Hemophilus influenzae in an adult.

Hemophilus influenzae, usually pathogenic in the pediatric population, caused septicemia and peritonitis in the cirrhotic adult described here. Susceptibility to this unusual adult pathogen was perhaps related to liver disease or corticosteroid treatment. This organism has not previously been associated with the syndrome of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in an adult.

[Transperitoneal resorption in acute and chronic peritonitis (author's transl)].

Two forms of peritonitis have been examined on 60 rats (Wistar) in three groups. Group 1 = acute peritonitis, group 2 = chronic peritonitis and group 3 = control. All animals have had an injection of an aminoglycosid antibiotic and a proteinase inhibitor into the peritoneal cavity. One intended to measure the influence of the proteinase inhibitor for different kinds of inflammation of the function of resorption of the peritoneum. Serum concentration of the antibiotic after 30, 60, and 90 min was measured. In clinical dosage the resorption of protein-bonded aminoglycosid antibiotics was decreas…

[Biliary peritonitis. Clinical and statistical findings in 37 cases].

Following an aetiopathogenetic and physiopathological discussion of biliary peritonitis, a statistical analysis of the main clinical symptoms observed is presented on the basis of 37 personal cases with a view to highlighting diagnostic factors capable of identifying a disease process which may easily be confused with other acute abdominal diseases. The need to intervene as quickly as possible is finally noted.

Feline infectious peritonitis. Proteins of plasma and ascitic fluid.

Electrophoreses of sera, plasma and ascitic fluids of cats with natural or experimental infectious peritonitis show important modifications. Special stainings of electrophoreses and chromatographic and immunoelectrophoretic technics characterized some of the modified proteins. In the experimental disease, fibrinogen, haptoglobin, transferrin, and probably orosomucoid are increased; in the natural disease, in addition to these modifications, the gamma-globulins are strongly increased; the immunoglobulins found in the often abundant ascitic fluid belong to the IgG class. Increased proteins such …

Plasma protein alterations in cattle suffering from acute peritonitis.

Modification of the normal plasma protein picture has been studied in plasma samples from cows suffering from spontaneously arisen (17 cases) or experimentally induced acute peritonitis (5 cases) using polyacrylamide electrophoresis. Considerable differences were found in the postalbumin region during peritonitis. One protein component increased in size, while another disappeared. Two weak components in normal samples were replaced by four discrete protein bands. These modifications were not detected in any of 10 plasma samples from cows suffering from other diseases than peritonitis or in any…
