The Relationship of Personality Organization and Resilience With Treatment Motivation and Early Recovery Rates in Patients With Opioid and Polysubstance Use Disorders.

Introduction: Personality organization, defense mechanisms, psychological resilience, and treatment motivation are key psychological constructs that influence both the development and treatment outcomes of substance use disorders (SUD). The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between treatment motivation, acute remission rates, personality organization, and psychological resilience in patients diagnosed opioid use disorder (OUD) and polysubstance use disorder (PSUD). Method: The study included 30 patients with opioid use disorder (OUD), 30 with polysubstance use disorder (PSU

Teacher Personality Predicts Emotional Well-Being and Academic Achievement in Students with Specific Learning Disorders.

Background/Objectives: Students with specific learning disorders (SLDs) are at increased risk for emotional and academic difficulties. While teacher characteristics can influence student outcomes, few studies have examined the role of teacher personality in supporting students with SLDs. This study investigated whether teacher personality traits predicted student emotional well-being and academic achievement in a school-based intervention context. Methods: Participants were 64 students with SLDs (Mage = 13.28) nested within 21 teachers. Students completed measures of emotional well-being at ba

The elephant in the room: Is betrayal trauma associated with borderline personality disorder?

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has been found to be closely linked to childhood trauma, particularly betrayal trauma. AIM: In our study, we aimed to investigate the association between betrayal trauma and anxiety among young adults. METHODS: We assessed a total of 305 young adults using a Google form utilizing three assessment tools: the 10-item McLean Screening Instrument for Borderline Personality Disorder (MSI-BPD), the 12-item Brief Betrayal Trauma Survey (BBTS), and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) to evaluate borderline personality traits, betrayal tra

Gene by neuroticism interaction and cognitive function among older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Both apolipoprotein E (ApoE) ε-4 allele(s) and elevated trait neuroticism, the tendency to experience distress, are associated with cognitive function among older adults. We predicted that neuroticism moderates the association between ApoE and cognitive function and also explored whether other personality dimensions (openness to experience, agreeableness, extraversion, and conscientiousness) affect the association between ApoE status and cognitive function. METHOD: Five-hundred and ninety-seven older adults (mean age of 78 years) enrolled in the Ginkgo Evaluation of Memory study c

The mental health of primary care physicians in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany: the prevalence of problems and identification of possible risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The generally high job-related stress level among physicians may lead to various health impairments in the long run. Apart from job-related stress, stress during leisure time and certain personality traits might be risk factors for health impairments. However, very little research on the health situation of primary care physicians (PCPs) in Germany is available. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to systematically assess the stress experience and the health situation of German PCPs. One main focus was on mental health. METHODS: In 2009, a state-wide survey among pra

Outreach health-care services for people experiencing exclusion in high-income countries.

Inclusion health aims to prevent and address health and social inequalities for people experiencing exclusion, such as people experiencing homelessness, people who have a history of contact with the criminal justice system, people who use drugs, sex workers, vulnerable migrants, victims of modern slavery and human trafficking, and Romany Gypsy, Roma, and Travellers communities. These populations have poor health outcomes and disproportionate health inequities, partly resulting from inadequate health-care access. Outreach services can improve health-care access, but there is little evidence of

Islamic Jurisprudence, Biomedical Ethics, and the Social Construct in Relation to Intersex People: A Scoping Review.

In Islamic jurisprudence, intersex people are known as khuntha-those who have both male and female multiplicative organs. Taking into account the fragmented evidence on the role of science in the treatment of the khuntha, the socioethical demands, and expectations of people depending on their gender, this study aims to better understand the existing literature on the khuntha people in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA)-the perception, acceptance, and treatment from families, communities, and health care providers. This study used a scoping review framework and was guided by the Pre

The story so far: scoping review of narratives in deaf children.

Narrative language samples can be used to measure language development in children, but research on narrative development in deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children is scarce, limiting knowledge of developmental stages and best practices for collection and analysis. This scoping review included 39 articles that explored recent methodologies and achievements in oral or signed narratives of DHH children, including comparisons with hearing peers and within-group analyses of early auditory experience, device use, and other measures. Articles featured DHH participants aged < 4 to 18 years, varying

How Should Clinicians Navigate Decision Making About Genital Reconstructive Surgeries Among Intersex and Transgender Populations?

Genital reconstructive surgeries (GRS) are available for a variety of indications and populations, including transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals and those with intersex traits/differences in sex development (I/dsd). Despite the common outcomes of GRS for TGD and I/dsd individuals, decision making about this surgical care differs between these populations and across the lifespan. Sociocultural perspectives on sexuality and gender dominate the ethics of GRS, and reform is needed within clinical ethics to center the autonomy of TGD and I/dsd individuals in informed consent processes.

Perceived Support Needs of School-Aged Young People on the Autism Spectrum and Their Caregivers.

With increasing demands for health, disability and education services, innovative approaches can help distribute limited resources according to need. Despite an increased focus on support needs within the clinical pathway and policy landscape, the body of research knowledge on this topic is at a relatively early stage. However, there appears to be a sense of unmet support needs and dissatisfaction with the provision of required support following an autism diagnosis amongst caregivers of young people on the spectrum. The primary aim of this study was to explore the perceived support needs of Au

Development of socio-emotional competence in bonobos.

Social and emotional skills are tightly interlinked in human development, and both are negatively impacted by disrupted social development. The same interplay between social and emotional skills, including expressions of empathy, has received scant attention in other primates however, despite the growing interest in caring, friendships, and the fitness benefits of social skills. Here we examine the development of socio-emotional competence in juvenile bonobos (Pan paniscus) at a sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, focusing on the interplay between various skills, including empat

Toward a typology of health-related informal credit: an exploration of borrowing practices for paying for health care by the poor in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Borrowing money is a common strategy to cope with health care costs. The impact of borrowing on households can be severe, leading to indebtedness and further impoverishment. However, the available literature on borrowing practices for health is limited. We explore borrowing practices for paying for health care by the poor in Cambodia and provide a typology, associated conditions, and the extent of the phenomenon. METHODS: In addition to a semi-structured literature review, in-depth interviews were conducted with representatives of 47 households with health-related debt and 19 mana

The role of parent-child bonding, attachment, and interpersonal problems in the development of deviant sexual fantasies in sexual offenders.

To understand the origin, development, and functions of deviant sexual fantasy in sexual offenders, the present article investigates three areas of the literature on sexual offenders (i.e., parent-child relationships, attachment, and interpersonal problems), hypothesizing a possible path through which dysfunctional parent-child relationships might lead to deviant sexual fantasies. The review of the literature provides indirect evidence that an insecure attachment style developed in response to dysfunctional parenting practices may generate feelings of inadequacy and inferiority to others and a

Aggression: its relation to desire and self-interest.

Aggression continues to be a problematic, ill-defined concept for most contemporary analysts. Questions about the nature and origin of aggression remain unanswered. On the one hand, aggression is conceived of as an instinctual drive; on the other, it is thought to originate as an instrument of reaction to external sources of frustration and environmental failures to meet developmental needs. Aggression has also been dichotomized as either the benign activity of assertiveness, or the darker destructive force of hostility, believed by many to arise from separate motivational systems. There is a

A neuropsychological approach to the assessment of adults with learning disabilities in vocational rehabilitation.

A description of cognitive, academic, and personality characteristics of adults with learning disabilities (LD) referred for services through the state/federal vocational rehabilitation system is presented. This study builds on the work of Minskoff, Hawks, Steidle, and Hoffmann (1989) and validates their conclusions that, as a group, adults with LD participating in vocational rehabilitation are homogeneous relative to other groups of adults with LD. By taking a neuropsychological approach to the assessment process, the current study further subdivided the assessment categories described by Min

Poststructuralist historicism and the psychological construction of anxiety disorders.

When applied to the construction of anxiety disorders, theories of poststructuralist historicism emphasize acts of interpretation that constitute and construct the disorders and problematize the processes by which meaning is constructed. An examination of the historical formulations of anxiety disorders, and in particular, agoraphobia, provides the opportunity for reanalyzing traditional approaches to the classifications of disorders. Psychological issues of paradox, attachment, and personal identity, which are crucial to current conceptualizations of agoraphobia, are acutely problematized wit

Adaptation and well-being.

An overview is given of the strategies individuals use to overcome misfortune and to restore their subjective well-being. Using adaptation-theory as a frame of reference, three groups of adaptive mechanisms are described, i.e., shifting intrapsychic criteria, cognitive reconstruction, and future-time perception. The differences and similarities with related theoretical perspectives (for instance, 'coping' and 'control') are identified. Many other theoretical notions are briefly discussed and given a place in the presented framework. In the concluding section the possible role of moderating fac

Recent development in alcoholism:sociology.

This chapter reviews several domains of sociological research conducted in the field of alcohol studies during the last decade. The domains are organized within the sociostructural, social constructionist, and distribution of consumption theoretical perspectives. Discussions of the current state of the field and definitional and measurement issues are also included. Within the sociostructural perspective, sociocultural theories, social deviance theories, age, gender, ethnic, and occupational group differences, and other related deviant behaviors are examined. Several examples of applications o

Characteristics common to females who exhibit anorexic or bulimic behavior: a review of current literature.

This paper reviews recent literature on the characteristics of females who exhibit anorexic or bulimic symptoms. Although researchers categorize bulimics as either binge/restrictors or binge/purgers, this paper does not distinguish between the two with regard to characteristics. Personal, cognitive, and physical characteristics, as well as external influences, are examined for each. An additional purpose of the paper is to provide an overview of risk factors that may predispose an individual to bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa.
