Systematic work in the mouse and chicken has mapped out two neural crest-derived pathways of melanocyte precursor migration. With these in mind, this study reappraises the patterns of congenital pigmentary disorders in humans and identifies three recurrent patterns consistent across genetically different diseases. Only two of these are seen in diseases known to be melanocyte cell-autonomous. The segmental pattern correlates well with the classical dorsolateral population from animal studies, demonstrating respect of the midline, cranio-caudal axial mixing, unilateral migration and involvement

Systemic conditions may have pigmentary associations. Prompt recognition of these associations allows the practitioner to initiate the appropriate workup and therapy when indicated. This contribution highlights some of the clinical features of neurofibromatosis 1, LEOPARD syndrome, acanthosis nigricans, hypomelanosis of Ito, incontinentia pigmenti, CHILD syndrome, and piebaldism to assist the dermatologist in making the proper diagnosis.

Granulomatous pigmented purpuric dermatosis is a rare entity. Historically, it has been seen in Asians. In this article, we report the case of a white man with this unusual variant. A 65-year-old, white man presented with a 1-year history of asymptomatic purpuric to brown papules on both lower legs and more confluent on dorsum of feet. He had an underlying history of hypertension and hyperlipidemia. Skin biopsy revealed a granulomatous lympho-histocytary inflammatory infiltrate in papillary dermis and superficial reticular dermis with extravasation of red blood cells and siderophages. Periodic

Dowling-Degos disease (DDD) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited pigmentary disorder of the flexures with a reticulate aspect and with presence of prominent comedone-like lesions and pitted scars. The diagnosis includes acanthosis nigricans as well as other reticulate pigmentary disorders classified into: dyschromatrosis symmetrica hereditaria (DSH), dyschromatosis universalis hereditaria (DUH) and reticulate acropigmentation of Kitamura (RAPK). We present a 35-year-old woman, which presented with flexural hyperpigmentation considerate as acanthosis nigricans. At a close clinical and histopa

Initially described as the 'complex of myxomas, spotty skin pigmentation and endocrine overactivity,' Carney complex (CNC) is known as an autosomal dominant multiple neoplasia syndrome involving skin and cardiac myxomas, pigmented skin lesions and endocrine tumors. Pigmented cutaneous manifestations in CNC are important diagnostically because they can be used for the early detection of the disease and, thus, the prevention of life-threatening complications of CNC related to heart myxomas and endocrine abnormalities. Specific for the disease skin lesions are present in more than half of the CNC

INTRODUCTION: Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides is a rare clinical form of the disease, first described in 1978. Since then, only a hundred odd cases have been documented.
CASE REPORT: A young 19 year-old African woman had presented with hypochromatic macules since the age of 9 and for which the diagnostic enquiry had finally concluded in hypopigmented mycosis fungoides.
DISCUSSION: The particularities of this form of mycosis fungoides, grade I according to the TNM classification, are principally its onset in black-skinned persons or of Asian origin, and the age of early onset with a predomina

We describe benign pigmented tumors of the lids, including benign lesions of the epithelium such as papillomas, seborrheic keratosis, and inverted follicular keratosis; precancerous lesions of the epithelium such as xeroderma pigmentosum and actinic keratosis; melanocytic lesions such as Ota nevus, lentigo, and lentigo maligna; and nevi and other lesions simulating a melanoma such as pigmented hidrocystoma, angiomas, and epithelial cyst. For each of these lesions, we describe the clinical and histopathological aspect as well as the therapeutic guidelines.

Black esophagus is an uncommon entity that has been described only a few times previously. It is defined as a dark pigmentation of the esophagus associated with histologic mucosal necrosis. Most cases have no known etiology, although ischemia, nasogastric tube trauma, infection, gastric outlet obstruction, gastric volvulus, and hypersensitivity to antibiotics have all been suggested as possible causes. Herein we report the case of a young, healthy, athletic man who developed black esophagus due to severe vomiting after alcohol overindulgence and summarize the other published cases to date.

Malignant melanoma is a tumor arising from melanocytes. Epidemiological data indicate rapid and progressive increase of malignant melanoma cases in Poland and other countries. Early diagnosis in malignant melanoma is the most important for the prognosis. Therefore the best treatment is ultraviolet prevention--sunscreen prophylactic, educational campaigns. Early diagnosis of malignant melanoma is based on ABCDE rules, seven point check Glasgow scale, dermatoscopy (a modern method in the differential diagnostics) and the knowledge of predisposing factors. There are several methods of treatment o

Increased public awareness of ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced skin cancers has lead to new interest in technologies for protection from sun exposure. Although many sun protection formulations are available, few of them attempt to achieve that provided by melanin itself, i.e., wide-spectrum absorbance of radiant energy coupled with anti-oxidant activity from a single product. In that regard, technologies in two separate areas are at or near the commercialization stage: 1) hormonal enhancement of natural skin melanin content, and 2) inclusion of natural and synthetic melanins in cosmetic form
