Assessing social competence and antisocial behaviors in children: item response theory analysis of the home and community social behavior scales.

BACKGROUND: The Home and Community Social Behavior Scales (HCSBS) is a rating scale that assesses social competence and antisocial behavior among children and youths between ages 5-18. The present study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the HCSBS by applying item response theory (IRT). METHODS: The HCSBS was completed by parents of 551 Norwegian children refereed to three independent interventions towards problem behaviors. Data used in this study was collected before the interventions started. IRT was carried out in R version 4.0.0 to investigate HCSBS items, subscales and …

The Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale: Updated Factor Structure, Measurement Invariance, and National Caregiver Norms.

OBJECTIVE: To provide the first caregiver-report national norms for the Disruptive Behavior Disorders Rating Scale (DBDRS) and an updated evaluation of its factor structure and measurement invariance across child sex, informant sex, and child age. METHODS: Caregivers of children aged 5-12 years (N = 962) based in the United States completed the four DBDRS subscales. Using both severity scoring and dichotomous scoring procedures, confirmatory factor analyses supported a four-factor model of inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms, oppositional defiant symptoms, and conduct disorder symp

Contemporary screen time modalities and disruptive behavior disorders in children: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional studies have demonstrated associations between screen time and disruptive behavior disorders (conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder); however, prospective associations remain unknown. This study's objective was to determine the prospective associations of contemporary screen time modalities with conduct and oppositional defiant disorder in a national cohort of 9-11-year-old children. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 11,875). Modified Poisson regression analyses were conducted to estimate the as

Aggression subtypes relate to distinct resting state functional connectivity in children and adolescents with disruptive behavior.

There is increasing evidence for altered brain resting state functional connectivity in adolescents with disruptive behavior. While a considerable body of behavioral research points to differences between reactive and proactive aggression, it remains unknown whether these two subtypes have dissociable effects on connectivity. Additionally, callous-unemotional traits are important specifiers in subtyping aggressive behavior along the affective dimension. Accordingly, we examined associations between two aggression subtypes along with callous-unemotional traits using a seed-to-voxel approach. Si

Effects of Aggression Replacement Training on Problem Solving, Anger and Aggressive Behaviour among Adolescents with Criminal Attempts in Turkey: A Quasi-Experimental Study.

The research was conducted by a pretest and post-test conducted in a quasi-experimental design which aimed to determine effectiveness of Aggression Replacement Training (ART) on problem solving, anger and aggressive behaviour among adolescents with criminal attempts in Turkey. The study included 65 adolescents with criminal attempts (32 intervention, 33 control). There was no difference between the groups in terms of average age (16.13±1.10 in the experimental group and 16.21±0.89 in the control group). After the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly decreased Trait Anger l

The competency of responses given by maritally violent versus nonviolent men to problematic marital situations.

The present study was designed to examine the social skills of maritally violent men by comparing the responses offered by violent and nonviolent men to potential marital conflicts. Problematic marital situation vignettes were presented to three subject groups: 22 maritally violent husbands, 17 nonviolent and maritally distressed husbands, and 17 nonviolent and nondistressed husbands. Subjects were asked what they would do or say in each of the situations; their responses were coded for level of competency. Violent men offered responses which were less competent than those offered by nonviolen

An evaluation of contingency strength and response suppression.

Typically, functional analyses of severe problem behavior have been conducted in two ways: (a) The target response is reinforced immediately after it occurs, or (b) the target response is reinforced on some schedule thought to mimic a naturally occurring schedule. We evaluated the effects of contingency strength in reducing levels of problem behavior with 2 participants who had been diagnosed with developmental disabilities. Results showed that under a neutral contingency, one in which the probability of reinforcement for aggression was equal to the probability of reinforcement for the nonoccu…

Heterogeneity in Response during Multisystemic Therapy: Exploring Subgroups and Predictors.

Multiple studies have shown that Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is, at group level, an effective treatment for adolescents showing serious externalizing problem behavior. The current study expands previous research on MST by, first, examining whether subgroups of participants who respond differently to treatment could be identified. Second, we investigated if the different trajectories of change during MST could be predicted by individual (hostile attributions) and contextual (parental sense of parenting competence and deviant and prosocial peer involvement) pre-treatment factors. Participants we…

Parental gambling frequency and adolescent gambling: A cross-sectional path model involving adolescents and parents.

INTRODUCTION: Nowadays, most of the research studies in the field of adolescent gambling are focused on individual factors related to problem gambling. The aim of this study was to test an integrated model to explain adolescent problem gambling involving both individual (i.e., correct gambling knowledge, superstitious thinking, and gambling-related cognitive distortions) and environmental factors (i.e., parental gambling frequency). In detail, the aim was to better understand the role of parental gambling behavior on adolescents' gambling frequency and problem gambling severity, to draw indica

Illicit drug use, alcohol use and problem drinking among infrequent and frequent road ragers.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationships between illicit drug and alcohol use, problem drinking, and road rage. Particular attention is devoted to the association between these behaviors and frequent involvement in road rage activities. The data are taken from the 2002 Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Monitor, a representative telephone survey with a sample of 2421 adults aged 18 and older in Ontario. A cluster analysis was performed and analysis of variance procedures were used to test for group differences. The cluster analysis revealed five distinct groups

The Role of Exposure to Depictions of Bystander Intervention on Crime Dramas and Reality Dating Television on Bystander Intervention Behavior.

Sexual violence is a rampant problem on college campuses. One of the most popular ways to curb this issue in universities is bystander intervention training. Bystander intervention behavior involves identifying a problem and acting as a third party to de-escalate a situation. In this study, we explore how media can play a role in bystander intervention behavior, specifically where sex-related situations involving alcohol. The literature suggests that both crime dramas and reality dating television shows can influence sex- and relationship-related behaviors and attitudes. Based on that, we inve

Problem-solving skills, locus of control, and the contraceptive effectiveness of young women.

It was proposed that the lack of insight into the risk-taking behavior of many sexually active women who do not want to get pregnant may reflect the lack of an adequate framework from which to investigate the problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between contraceptive effectiveness and several cognitive factors. The sample consisted of 155 single women, 15.3-25.7 years of age, from a Planned Parenthood clinic and an abortion clinic. Contraceptive effectiveness, operationally defined as the number of unplanned pregnancies in a woman's history, was significantly and

Gabapentin for self-injurious behavior in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome.

Self-injurious behavior is a common clinical problem in children with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, an X-linked disorder of purine metabolism. This behavior is not observed in other conditions associated with increased serum concentrations of uric acid, hypoxanthine, and xanthine. Various neurotransmitters appear to play a pivotal role in self-injurious behavior. The authors present a patient with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, whose self-injurious behavior was effectively treated with gabapentin, and discuss possible mechanisms of action.

Environmental tobacco smoke exposure and child behaviors.

RATIONALE: Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) may be linked with behavior problems in childhood, but previous research has relied primarily on parent report of exposure, and results are inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between exposure to ETS and child behavior problems among children with asthma. METHODS: The sample included 220 children who were enrolled in an asthma intervention trial and regularly exposed to ETS at home. Serum cotinine was used to measure exposure to tobacco smoke, and behavior problems were assessed by

Collecting Real-Life Psychophysiological Data via Wearables to Better Understand Child Behavior in a Children's Psychiatric Center: Mixed Methods Study on Feasibility and Implementation.

BACKGROUND: In the field of mental health care, the incorporation of wearable devices into routine clinical practice continues to face significant challenges, despite the presence of supporting scientific evidence. Crossing the wasteland between the trial world and the real world is full of obstacles that often only become apparent during the implementation process. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper was to evaluate the feasibility of using wearables in real-world clinical settings for children with severe developmental problems to help understand and manage disruptive behavior and to gai

Neighborhood assets, parenting, and child disruptive behavior in low-income Black families.

Neighborhood assets, such as access to recreational facilities, density of residence, and safety, were examined in relation to parenting and disruptive behavior in early childhood. Examining data from a low-income Black preschool sample, this study investigated how self-reported neighborhood assets and observed parenting behaviors interactively predict observed disruptive behavior in children. Findings revealed a significant relationship between parenting and child behavior, where parenting with high sensitivity and engagement and parenting with less verbal and physical interference and intrus

Treatment of childhood disruptive behavior disorders and callous-unemotional traits: a systematic review and two multilevel meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: Children with callous-unemotional (CU) traits are at high lifetime risk of antisocial behavior. It is unknown if treatments for disruptive behavior disorders are as effective for children with CU traits (DBD+CU) as those without (DBD-only), nor if treatments directly reduce CU traits. Separate multilevel meta-analyses were conducted to compare treatment effects on DBD symptoms for DBD+CU versus DBD-only children and evaluate direct treatment-related reductions in CU traits, as well as to examine moderating factors for both questions. METHODS: We systematically searched PsycINFO, P

Developmental pathways from preschool temper tantrums to later psychopathology.

Temper tantrums are sudden, overt negative emotional displays that are disproportionate to the eliciting event. Research supports that severe temper tantrums during the preschool period are associated with preschool psychopathology, but few studies have identified which characteristics of preschool tantrums are predictive of distal psychopathological outcomes in later childhood and adolescence. To examine this question, we used a prospective, longitudinal dataset enriched for early psychopathology. Participants (N = 299) included 3-to 6-year-old children (47.8% female) assessed for tantrums an
