[Alcohol polyneuropathy].

The Alcoholic Polyneuropathy occurs in about 10-30% of alcoholics. It is the second most frequent type of polyneuropathies after the diabetic form. The clinical pattern is a symmetric sensory or symmetric motor sensory manifestation type. In almost all cases there is a pressure pain of the calves. In the beginning the disturbance of the proprioceptive sensation is predominant. Disturbances of the autonomic nervous system deal with the sympathetic as well as the parasympathetic nervous system. Morphologically there is a primary axonal degeneration. A direct toxic influence of the alcohol itself

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in Rambouillet sheep: characterization of the clinical disease.

A chronic progressive, neurodegenerative disease has been identified in 4 closely related flocks of purebred Rambouillet sheep. Blindness, circling, proprioceptive deficits, reduced cognition, and poor body condition are the main clinical signs. Prominent lesions include markedly decreased cerebral size and weight, enlarged cerebral ventricles, and intraneuronal accumulations of autofluorescent pigment. Affected sheep usually die between 1 and 2 years of age. The clinical signs and postmortem findings are consistent with neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis.

Vestibular inputs mask the directional specificity of neck proprioceptor afferent signals in sympathetic cardiovascular regulation during postural changes.

During postural changes, arterial blood pressure is regulated by multiple sensory systems, including vestibular and cervical proprioceptive inputs, but their interaction remains poorly understood. We examined the involvement and interaction of these inputs in urethane-anesthetized rabbits (n = 24). Responses to 45° head-down tilt (HDT), passive neck flexion (NF), and passive neck extension (NE) were compared between control and bilateral vestibular lesion (VL) groups. In control animals, HDT evoked transient, second-to-second suppression of renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) during the ea

Limb state accounts for differences between motor imagery and action in motor cortex.

The motor cortex is involved not only in movement execution but also in motor imagery, a process leveraged by decoding algorithms for brain-computer interface (BCI) applications in individuals with severe motor impairments. Previous work has shown that population activity during execution and imagery occupies partially overlapping regions of neural state space while also engaging distinct subspaces unique to each motor state, suggesting that decoders trained in one condition may not generalize to the other. Moreover, movement execution likely includes neural representations of both motor outpu

Visual, visuomotor, and kinesthetic abilities in football players: their relationship with sport-specific performance and trainability.

Success in football (soccer) rests on physical and technical capacity and on the perceptual and sensorimotor systems that let players read the game, act quickly, and control the body and the ball. This review examines three linked ability domains: visual (the quality and use of visual input, from static and dynamic acuity to peripheral awareness, object tracking, and visual search), visuomotor (the coupling of perception to action, including reaction time, eye-foot coordination, and visually guided movement), and kinesthetic (proprioception, joint position sense, kinesthetic differentiation, a…

Sensorimotor adaptation to sustained lower visual field occlusion during continuous locomotion with and without obstacle negotiation.

The importance of having visual feedback of the lower-limb to locomotion control, has typically been examined by intermittently occluding the lower visual field (lvf) in repeated obstacle crossing trials. A consistent finding is that foot clearance increases following lvf occlusion. However, there is some evidence that the increase in clearance diminishes with further repetition. This calls into question the importance of lvf feedback in the control of locomotion. We present two studies investigating how foot clearance is affected as a result of sustained lvf occlusion during continuous locomo

Audition and balance: The impact of echolocation on postural control.

The links between the perception of acoustic signals and postural control remain largely unexplored, and the control models proposed to date have yet to assign these sensory inputs a role alongside visual, proprioceptive, and vestibular information. Research on this topic has produced varied conclusions, likely due to significant methodological differences. Our study makes novel contributions by aiming to determine the impact of the auditory system-specifically through the perception of echoes-on postural control during quiet standing and to identify the potential link between auditory percept

Eyes and hand are both reliable at localizing somatosensory targets.

Body representations (BR) for action are critical to perform accurate movements. Yet, behavioral measures suggest that BR are distorted even in healthy people. However, the upper limb has mostly been used as a probe so far, making difficult to decide whether BR are truly distorted or whether this depends on the effector used as a readout. Here, we aimed to assess in healthy humans the accuracy of the eye and hand effectors in localizing somatosensory targets, to determine whether they may probe BR similarly. Twenty-six participants completed two localization tasks in which they had to localize

Is there a relationship between somatosensory impairment and the perception of pain in stroke survivors? An exploratory study.

Pain and somatosensory impairments are commonly reported following stroke. This study investigated the relationship between somatosensory impairments (touch detection, touch discrimination and proprioceptive discrimination) and the reported presence and perception of any bodily pain in stroke survivors. Stroke survivors with somatosensory impairment ( N  = 45) completed the Weinstein Enhanced Sensory Test (WEST), Tactile Discrimination Test, and Wrist Position Sense Test for quantification of somatosensation in both hands and the McGill Pain Questionnaire, visual analog scale and the Neuropath

Relationships between sensory processing patterns and metabolic risk factors among community dwelling people with metabolic syndrome: A cross-sectional and correlational research design.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of other serious health problems, particularly cardiovascular diseases and stroke. Sensory processing patterns (SPPs) are internal factors shaping behaviors and emotions, both healthy and unhealthy. There is a lack of studies directly examining the relationship between the SPPs and metabolic risk factors. METHOD: This study aimed to investigate SPPs and their association with metabolic risk factors in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MetS). One hundred and seventeen individuals with MetS completed questionnaires on demographic chara

Source Localization of Somatosensory Neural Generators in Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder, where differences are often present relating to the performance of motor skills. Our previous work elucidated unique event-related potential patterns of neural activity in those with ADHD when performing visuomotor and force-matching motor paradigms. The purpose of the current study was to identify whether there were unique neural sources related to somatosensory function and motor performance in those with ADHD. Source localization (sLORETA) software identified areas where neural activity differed between those

The Impact of Modifiable Preoral Factors on Swallowing and Nutritional Outcomes in Healthy Adults: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Swallowing has previously been characterized as consisting of four phases; however, it has become apparent that these four phases are not truly discrete and may be influenced by factors occurring prior to bolus entrance into the oral cavity (i.e., preoral factors). Still, the relationship between these factors and swallowing remains poorly understood. The aim of this review was to synthesize and characterize the literature pertaining to the influence of preoral factors on swallowing and nutritional outcomes in healthy individuals. METHOD: We performed a scoping review, searching the

Static Balance in Hereditary Spastic Paraplegias: a Cross-sectional Study.

Motor and somatosensory pathway dysfunction due to degeneration of long tracts in hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSP) indicates that postural abnormalities may be a relevant disease feature. However, balance assessments have been underutilized to study these conditions. How does the static balance of individuals with HSP with eyes open and closed differ from healthy controls, and how does it relate to disease severity? This cross-sectional case-control study assessed the static balance of 17 subjects with genetically confirmed HSP and 17 healthy individuals, evaluating the center of pressure

Characterization of neurological disease progression in a canine model of CLN5 neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.

Golden Retriever dogs with a frameshift variant in CLN5 (c.934_935delAG) suffer from a progressive neurodegenerative disorder analogous to the CLN5 form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL). Five littermate puppies homozygous for the deletion allele were identified prior to the onset of disease signs. Studies were performed to characterize the onset and progression of the disease in these dogs. Neurological signs that included restlessness, unwillingness to cooperate with the handlers, and proprioceptive deficits first became apparent at approximately 12 months of age. The neurological sign

The influence of fascial manipulation on function, ankle dorsiflexion range of motion and postural sway in individuals with chronic ankle instability.

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive deficits may attribute to functional Chronic ankle instability (CAI) with impairments in balance and postural control. Physical therapy interventions such as taping, bracing, manual therapy, and balance training play an essential role in managing ankle instabilities. Fascial Manipulation (FM) is a manual therapy technique considered to restore function by improving the joint range of motion and proprioception. However, the effects of FM on Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ADROM) and postural sway in athletes with chronic ankle instability are unclear. OBJECTIVE: …

Understanding Human Neural Control of Short-term Gait Adaptation to the Split-belt Treadmill.

Many studies of split-belt treadmill adaptation have been focused on the biomechanical changes that occur in response to walking on belts at different speeds. This process of adaptation, and the ensuing aftereffects that are present when participants return to typical treadmill walking, have inspired the potential use of the split-belt treadmill as a rehabilitation tool. However, a full systematic review of the current split-belt treadmill literature has not yet been published to consolidate what is known about how the human central nervous system (CNS) controls adaptation to this type of symm
