Myoelectric activity and sequencing of selected trunk muscles during isokinetic lifting.

Trained weight lifters lift heavy loads without a concomitant degree of acute low-back injuries. To study the process by which large loads are lifted with minimal injury, integrated electromyographic signals were recorded from four large muscle groups: gluteus maximus, quadriceps, latissimus dorsi, and erector spinae in 4 weight lifters and 11 asymptomatic control subjects. These signals were recorded during a floor-to-knuckle-height isokinetic lift (dead lift) at 30.5 and 45.7 cm/sec. The signals were normalized for the height of the lift and the maximal isokinetic integrated electromyographi

Impact of tyrosine kinase inhibitors on glucose control and insulin regulation in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia.

Treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), especially nilotinib, often results in hyperglycemia, which may further increase cardiovascular disease risk in patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The mechanism underlying the TKI-induced glucose dysregulation is not clear. TKIs are suggested to affect insulin secretion but also insulin sensitivity of peripheral tissue has been proposed to play a role in the pathogenesis of TKI-induced hyperglycemia. Here, we aimed to assess whether skeletal muscle glucose uptake and insulin responses are altered in nondiabetic patients with CML rece

ACTA1-myopathy with prominent finger flexor weakness and rimmed vacuoles.

Actinopathy is a group of clinically and pathologically heterogeneous myopathies due to mutations in the skeletal muscle sarcomeric α-actin 1-encoding gene (ACTA1). Disease-onset spans from prenatal life to adulthood and weakness can preferentially affect proximal or distal muscles. Myopathological findings include a spectrum of structural abnormalities with nemaline rods being the most common. We report a daughter and father with prominent finger flexors and/or quadriceps involvement. Muscle biopsies revealed rimmed vacuoles in both patients, associated with type 1 fiber atrophy in the daught

Camptocormia due to inclusion body myositis.

Inclusion body myositis is the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in elderly individuals. It typically causes proximal and distal limb weakness with forearm flexors and quadriceps being the most severely affected muscles. Axial musculature is infrequently involved. Here, we report an 80-year-old man who presented with an 18-month history of progressive truncal weakness causing stooped posture while standing and walking. Neurologic examination revealed no limb weakness. magnetic resonance imaging studies showed atrophy and findings, suggesting fatty replacement of paraspinal muscles.

Tendon transfers for peripheral nerve injuries of the lower extremity.

1. Nerve injuries in the lower extremity not infrequently result in paralysis of the muscles innervated by the injured nerve. 2. Disability caused by residual paralysis can be reduced by appropriate muscle transfers. 3. Deformity must be corrected before muscle transfer. 4. The most useful transfers in the lower extremities are the transfer of the tibialis posterior tendon anteriorly for correction of the equinovarus deformity of peroneal nerve injury; the transfer of the tibialis anterior with or without the peroneus longus to the calcaneus to prevent calcaneus deformity caused by loss of the

Pain-related function, muscle stiffness, and muscle activation in adults with patellofemoral pain.

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a prevalent knee condition affecting adolescents and active adults, characterized by diffuse anterior knee pain exacerbated by weight-bearing activities and knee flexion. The onset and improvement of PFP are believed to be related to the condition of the quadriceps muscles. However, there remains a lack of rapid, convenient, and accurate clinical tools for assessing the characteristics of muscles. Our research aimed to explore muscle stiffness in three states (resting, stretching, and contraction), as well as to evaluate muscle activation, and pain-rela…

Differences in lower-limb biomechanics during single-leg landing considering two peripheral fatigue tasks.

Dynamic knee valgus (DKV) occurs during landing after a fatigue task involving the lower extremity. However, the manner in which different peripheral fatigue tasks affect DKV remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the DKV via electromyography during single-leg landing considering the hip-joint fatigue task (HFT) and knee-joint fatigue task (KFT) performed by healthy men. We recruited 16 healthy male participants who performed a single-leg jump-landing motion from a height of 20 cm before and after an isokinetic hip abduction/adduction task (HFT) and knee extension/flexion task (KFT).

Load- and frequency-dependent impairments to isotonic power are greater than isometric torque following concentric-eccentric fatiguing contractions in humans.

Prolonged low-frequency force depression (PLFFD) is the disproportionate loss of force in response to low frequencies (e.g., <20 Hz) of activation compared to high frequencies (e.g., >50 Hz) following fatiguing contractions. While traditionally assessed using isometric contractions, the effect of PLFFD during dynamic contractions is much less explored. The purpose was to assess PLFFD at two loads (unloaded and 12.5% of maximal voluntary contraction) during dynamic isotonic and isometric contractions following a fatiguing task. Eighteen participants (23.3 ± 1.6 yr, 6 females) performed continuo

Effect of long-term maximum strength training on explosive strength, neural, and contractile properties.

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to compare explosive strength and underpinning contractile, hypertrophic, and neuromuscular ac … oup was attributable to higher evoked explosive strength, that in turn appeared to be due to larger quadriceps muscle size, rather than any differences in neuromuscular activation. In contrast, the inferior relative explosive strength of LT-MST appeared to be underpinned by slower intrinsic/evoked contractile properties.

The effect of hypertonic saline evoked muscle pain on neurophysiological changes and exercise performance in the contralateral limb.

Non-local muscle pain may impair endurance performance through neurophysiological mechanisms, but these are relatively unknown. This study examined the effects of muscle pain on neuromuscular and neurophysiological responses in the contralateral limb. On separate visits, nine participants completed an isometric time to task failure (TTF) using the right knee extensors after intramuscular injection of isotonic saline (CTRL) or hypertonic saline (HYP) into the left vastus lateralis. Measures of neuromuscular fatigue were taken before, during and after the TTF using transcranial magnetic stimulat

Central and peripheral fatigue during passive and exercise-induced hyperthermia.

PURPOSE: Hyperthermia was induced during prolonged exercise (ExH) and passive heating (PaH) to isolate the influence of exercise on neuromuscular function during a maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) of the quadriceps under heat stress. The influence of cardiovascular strain in limiting endurance performance in the heat was also examined. METHODS: On separate days, eight males cycled to exhaustion at 60% maximal oxygen uptake or were immersed in a water bath (∼41°C) until rectal temperature (Tre) increased to 39.5°C. The ExH and PaH interventions were performed in ambient conditions

[Selective training of the vastus medialis muscle using electrical stimulator for chondromalacia patella].

Chondromalacia patella is closely related with subluxation and tilt of patella, as well as with muscular atrophy of quadriceps, especially in vastus medialis muscle. 364 cases of chondromalacia patella were treated with selective training of the vastus medialis muscle using electrical stimulator in our hospital. 211 cases were followed up after treatment from 6 months to 3 years. Among them excellent and good results were seen in 130 cases (62%), fair results were seen in 69 cases (33%) and no change was seen in 12 cases (5%). Significant reduction of CA (P < 0.01) and LPA (P < 0.001) were obs

[A case of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with peripheral neuropathy and autonomic symptoms].

We report a 28-year-old man with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with peripheral neuropathy and autonomic symptoms. Muscle biopsy from the quadriceps femoris muscle showed myopathic changes with ragged-red fibers and abnormal mitochondria. He experienced recurrent and acute weakness in his bilateral lower limbs. Needle electromyogram revealed neurogenic changes, and the amplitude of muscle action potential was low in the right posterior tibial nerve. Sural nerve biopsy showed a marked loss of both large and small myelinated fibers, and moderate to severe axonal degeneration was diagnosed. He e

Quadriceps and ankle weakness in inclusion body myositis: impact on descending balance control and rehabilitation strategies - a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM), a progressive neuromuscular disorder, is characterized by quadriceps and ankle muscle weakness, leading to impaired balance control and increased fall risk during functional activities. Existing research highlights inconsistent evidence on fall risk reduction and a lack of standardized rehabilitation protocols, creating gaps in effective management. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence on the impact of muscle weakness on balance and fall risk and evaluate rehabilitation strategies, including task-specific interventions, to improve functi
