More Than Health: Long-Term Care Insurance Reshaping Family Support in Aging China.

China's rapidly aging population has strained traditional family-based elder care, leading to the introduction of Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI) as a government-supported solution. Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and employing Difference-in-Differences (DID) and Triple-Difference (DDD) methodologies, this study explores LTCI's impact on intergenerational financial transfers within households. The findings demonstrate that LTCI significantly increases financial support from elderly parents to adult children by reducing elder care-related economic bur…

Identification of cognitive impairment using the Lancet Commission's risk factors and Medicare administrative data.

INTRODUCTION: Prediction models based on administrative data may present a scalable opportunity to identify risk of cognitive impairment, but their accuracy relative to models using richer information is uncertain. METHODS: We developed and validated models to identify the likelihood of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia using the Health and Retirement Study linked to Medicare data from 2000 to 2016 (N = 63,740). Predictors covered most risk factors identified by the 2024 Lancet Commission. Model performance was assessed using multiple metrics, including the area under the receiver …

Cellular and molecular representations: Following the lesson of David Goodsell.

David Goodsell's images have helped, over the last 30 years, thousands of students all over the world to imagine the cellular world by representing molecules, proteins, complexes, viruses, bacteria, and cellular processes. His contributions to the development of Molecular Graphics (MG) have been invaluable, and his retirement is the last (for now) of his kind acts: opening space for the next generation of scholars in the art and science of MG. Compared to the '90s, we have a much wider range of objects, places, processes and information that can serve as the basis for our images, and we also h…

Network Types for End-Of-Life Care and Home Deaths Among Older Adults in Europe During COVID-19 Pandemic.

The study identified care network types comprising informal and formal care providers during the end-of-life period, and examined their relationship with home deaths. End-of-life interviews were conducted with proxies during the two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). The sample included 486 participants who passed away during the pandemic and received care during their final year. Latent Class Analysis identified three care network types: "mixed-care", mostly consisting of adult children in an informal network; "spouse", dominated b…

The relationship between widowhood and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults: Does living alone make a difference?

The experience of widowhood and that of living alone are significant life events that are strongly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. Nevertheless, few studies have examined the relationship between widowhood, living alone, and depressive symptoms among Chinese older adults, particularly with regard to the duration of widowhood. This study included 4,644 older adults aged 65 and above from the 2015, 2018, and 2020 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Linear regression models were used to examine the relationship between widowhood, living alone, and depress…

Social Support, Social Strain, and Self-Perceptions of Aging.

The current study examined changes and variation in self-perceptions of aging (SPA) and how these perceptions vary according to sources of support and strain from spouses, children, family, and friends. We used random intercept cross-lagged panel models to model within-person changes in SPA and support/strain over twelve years (2008-2020) among 22,160 older adults from the Health and Retirement Study. There was a bidirectional, positive association between spousal support and SPA. More positive SPA was associated with lower spousal strain, though spousal strain did not affect SPA. Surprisingly…

The "Fixed period," the wildfire news, and an unpublished manuscript: Osler's farewell speech revisited in geographical breadth and emotional depth.

William Osler, the founding Chair of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins College of Medicine, left for Oxford in 1905. He delivered a valedictory lecture February 1905 at Johns Hopkins in which he referred to a novel by Anthony Trollope called The Fixed Period. Osler stated that almost all important work was done prior to the age of 40 and the retirement age should be 60, at least for professors. In jest, he said that perhaps men should be euthanized by chloroform at age 60, which he recalled as the plot of the novel. The so-called Fixed Period address created a media controversy with numerous artic…

Factors Associated With Falls Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults With Osteoarthritis: A Sex Subgroup Analysis.

Osteoarthritis elevates the risk of falling among older adults due to joint pain and stiffness, especially among women, yet sex influences in these associations remain understudied. This study investigated factors associated with falls by sex. A sample of community-dwelling older adults with osteoarthritis from the 2016 Health and Retirement Study (2624 females; 1271 males) was analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression, controlling for sociodemographic characteristics such as geographic residence and health-related issues. For women with osteoarthritis, higher risk of falling was asso…

Does Social Support Alleviate the Caregiving Burden of Adult Children? Evidence from Chinese Long-Term Care Insurance Pilot Program.

In China, and many other developed nations, public long-term care insurance (LTCI) is a commonly adopted approach to meet long-term care needs, but its impact on the burden of family caregivers remains uncertain. This study investigated whether a parent having LTCI alleviates the caregiver burden for the adult child caregiver. Data derived from the 2011, 2013, and 2018 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (N = 4595 adult child caregivers). Guided by the stress-appraisal model, Difference-in-Difference (DID) methods were used to investigate the spillover effects of LTCI on caregiver s…
