BACKGROUND: Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" (LSCS) usually affects one side of the face and head in the frontoparietal area with band-like indurated skin lesions. The disease may be associated with facial hemiatrophy. Various ophthalmological and neurological abnormalities have been observed in patients with LSCS. We describe an unusual case of LSC.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 23 year old woman presented bilateral LSCS and facial atrophy. The patient had epileptic seizures as well as oculomotor and facial nerve palsy on the left side which also had pronounced skin involvement. Clinical feature

This study presents the detailed construction and the principle of performance of high frequency (HF) ultrasound scanner for skin examination. The aim of this study was to show a difference between diseased and healthy skin and to evaluate the usefulness of the scanner in monitoring of therapeutic efficacy of morphea and lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). We examined 48 patients aged between 15 and 64 years; 25 patients with plaque-type morphea, nine patients with linear morphea and 14 patients with LSA. In the course of 18 months all patients were examined before, during and after treatmen

We reported a 44-year-old Japanese woman with generalized multiple sclerotic plaques, which showed histological findings of morphea. This patient also had an erosive lesion on her mouth; its histological findings were consistent with lichen planus. A sclerotic lesion on her thigh showed the histological findings of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA). These data suggest that similar etiologic events or closely related pathologic processes are involved in morphea, lichen planus, and LSA.

INTRODUCTION: Subcutaneous tissue is an uncommon primary localization for T-cell lymphomas. Panniculitis with recurrent papulonodules are reported in most cases.
CASE REPORT: We report a case in which small-cell pleiomorphic non-Hodgkin lymphoma developed initially in subcutaneous tissue followed by secondary systemic extension. The first clinical manifestation was a sclerodermiform syndrome involving the four limbs.
DISCUSSION: This type of lymphoma appears to have a polymorphic clinical presentation. Physicians should be aware of this type of lymphoma and use immunohistological techniques

A 21-year-old housewife with maturity onset type diabetes of young people developed scleredema diabeticorum, scleroderma-like skin thickness on forearms and dorsum of hands, digital sclerosis and cheiroarthropathy. She had diabetes mellitus since the age of 11 years. Her grandfather on the mother's side, her mother and 3 of 5 her mother's brothers and sisters have diabetes mellitus. Blood glucose was 295 mg/dl. Urinary glucose was 5.3 g/day. Nail fold capillary microscopy revealed a progressive systemic sclerosis pattern. Histologically, hematoxylin and eosin sections from back and forearm ski

Abnormalities of the capillary microcirculation may be important in the pathogenesis of venous ulceration. In this study the characteristics of capillary vasomotion in venous disease have been studied using laser Doppler flowmetry. The amplitude and frequency of vasomotion in the skin microcirculation as measured by laser Doppler flowmetry was determined in 101 subjects. These comprised 43 subjects with venous disease and lipodermatosclerosis (LDS), 14 subjects with uncomplicated varicose veins (VV), and 44 normal controls. In 43 of these 101 limbs, vasomotion was also measured after heating t

Patients with localized morphoea have an increased incidence of auto-immune disorders, but this is not related to the age of onset, duration of disease nor the site or number of lesions. The patients have an increased incidence of tissue antibodies and these are more common when more than one lesion is present. The relatives of the patients have also been found to have an increased incidence of auto-immune disorders. These findings suggest an immunological basis for the disease and indicate that the patients should be investigated and followed up to detect the evidence of other auto-immune dis

In order to elucidate the possible spirochetal origin of morphea and lichen sclerosus et atrophicans (LSA), we investigated biopsy specimens from 13 patients with morphea and 13 patients with LSA. Four patients with acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans (ACA), three with erythema chronicum migrans (ECM), and 11 patients with other inflammatory dermatoses served as controls. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections were stained by an avidin-biotin-immunoperoxidase method, using serum of a patient with ACA that contained IgG antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi. As positive control substrate, form

The distinctions between eosinophilic fascitis (Shulman's syndrome) and scleroderma may sometimes be unclear. We describe a patient with generalized morphea who also had peripheral blood eosinophilia, fibrosis and inflammation of fascia, and hyper-globulinemia, features usually attributed to Shulman's syndrome. The latter diagnosis should be restricted to those patients whose history, clinical and laboratory findings, and response to therapy closely resemble Shulman's original description. Scleroderma and eosinophilic fasciitis may represent slightly differing aspects of the same disease spect

Sixteen patients had biopsy-proved inflammatory sclerosis of the panniculus or fascia, which usually was seen in a generalized distribution. Although the sclerosis involved the digits of five patients, it was the result of centrifugal spread of the sclerosis and was not accompanied by ulcers, calcinosis, distal phalangeal resorption or telangiectasia. Four patients may have had digital vasopasm in the extremities involved in the sclerotic process. Five patients also had cutaneous lesions of dermal morphoea or lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. Four patients had a reduced carbon monoxide diffusing

The physician who specializes in pulmonary diseases has a most helpful aid in the form of chest roentgenography. This examination is secured routinely in many hospitals and clinics today. The roentgenogram is very accurate in finding pulmonary lesions. Accuracy in determining the type of lesion depends on the experience of the physician who is studying the patient.Pulmonary lesions occur in many systemic diseases. They may occur in some of the collagen diseases and at times they may be the first and also the most striking findings noted during the examination of a patient. For this reason, att

Early generalized morphea can clinically mimic mycosis fungoides. The microscopic features of early inflammatory morphea may show variable degrees of infiltration and do not have the characteristic dermal collagen sclerosis. We report the case of a 63-year-old female patient who presented with a 2-month history of an asymptomatic skin rash. Physical examination revealed multiple erythematous to dusky patches on the trunk and thighs, resembling the patch stage of mycosis fungoides. Two skin biopsies were performed, both of which showed prominent interstitial lymphoid infiltration in the reticul

Calcinosis cutis, although common in systemic sclerosis, has been rarely reported in patients with morphea. We describe four patients with calcinosis cutis arising within morphea plaques, discuss their treatments and outcomes, and review previously published cases. Current management recommendations for concomitant morphea and dystrophic calcinosis cutis are based on limited data and expert opinion, which has primarily focused on reduction of active inflammation and reduction of symptoms related to calcinosis or ulceration. In most cases, no improvement of calcinosis was noted. The use of intr

A 12-year-old female with oligoarticular juvenile inflammatory arthritis developed an atrophic linear plaque involving the left medial forearm and proximal arm 7 months after intra-articular triamcinolone injection for arthritis. The plaque spontaneously resolved without treatment over approximately one year. It is important to recognize this rare complication of intra-articular steroid injection in order to avoid potential misdiagnosis as linear scleroderma and subsequent immunosuppressive treatment.

Patients with autoimmune disorders are predisposed to develop a second immunologic disease, frequently with systemic involvement. We present a patient who developed lesions of discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) limited to the face, and, concurrently, a linear morphoea involving her right axilla. No criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus or systemic scleroderma were present in the patient. To our knowledge, no patients with concomitant DLE and linear morphoea, without systemic involvement, have been previously reported in the literature.

En coup de sabre is a rare subtype of linear scleroderma that characteristically affects the skin, underlying muscle, and bone of the frontoparietal region of the face and scalp. It typically presents in the first two decades of life, and may be associated with focal neurological deficits. We present a case of late-onset en coup de sabre of the frontal bone where the diagnosis was further complicated by a history of breast cancer, prior trauma to the region, and use of topical medication.
