Multi-Level Assessment to Reach Out to Rural Breast Cancer Survivors.

Rural breast cancer survivors experience gaps in post-treatment education and support. We report the development and delivery of Reach Out to Rural Breast Cancer Survivors Program. Community-based participatory research and multi-level assessment were used to (a) engage rural community leaders, survivors, and providers; (b) analyze and report results of discussion groups to understand survivorship concerns and preferences; (c) integrate discussion group findings to develop, tailor, and deliver Reach Out; and (d) evaluate Reach Out with regard to satisfaction and helpfulness. In total, 16 rural

Overcoming the hurdles: Understanding motivation and supporting adult learners with poor literacy and dyslexia in the homelessness sector.

Literacy difficulties are often reported by adults with experience of homelessness. Yet, research on their learning experiences and clarity on how best to support this group is lacking. The present study explored the experience of homeless literacy learners (HLLs) and asked what motivated them to engage with literacy support and the teaching-related factors perceived to be most effective. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 HLLs (aged 31-68) engaged in literacy provision at a homelessness charity in the United Kingdom. Thematic analysis of the data revealed five key themes: chall

Prevalence of adolescent problem gambling, related harms and help-seeking behaviours among an Australian population.

Epidemiological studies have consistently reported prevalence rates ranging between 0.9 and 23.5% for problem gambling among young people. With such a large range reported in the literature, it is clear that more research in this area would be of value. The current study investigated the prevalence rate of adolescent gambling and problem gambling and explored types of harm-related and help-seeking behaviours associated with gambling specific to this population in an Australian setting. A self-administered battery of questionnaires was distributed to 252 students aged 12-18 years, attending fou

[Memory training: an important constituent of milieu therapy in senile dementia].

At the Memory Clinic in Basel we provide long-term memory training as part of our "milieu therapy". Mildly demented elderly out-patients attend weekly group sessions of 60 min for a special semistructured memory training. The goal is to relearn and practice strategies which help to preserve or extend the phase of autonomy and thus life quality and self-esteem. In several studies we tested the efficiency of the training on mood, global mental status, short-term memory, cognitive flexibility, and quality of life by comparing the performance of groups of patients attending the memory training to

Applicability of acceptance and commitment therapy-based mobile app in depression nursing.

Due to the high burden of depression, new models and methods of mental healthcare need to be developed. Prior research has shown the potential benefits of using technology tools such as mobile apps as self-help or combined with psychological treatment. Therefore, professionals should acquaint themselves with evidence-based apps to be able to use them with clients and guide the clients in their use. The purpose of this study was to explore how an acceptance and commitment therapy-based mobile app was perceived as a self-management tool among nurses, and how it could be applied in the prevention

Pattern of cannabis use in ecstasy polydrug users: moderate cannabis use may compensate for self-rated aggression and somatic symptoms.

Cannabis is one of the most common 'co-drugs' for ecstasy users. The aim of the present study was to explore self-reported psychobiological problems in ecstasy polydrug users in relation to their pattern of cannabis use. Two hundred and eighty ecstasy polydrug users were allocated into five cannabis groups according to the frequency of their cannabis use. The control group comprised 121 alcohol-tobacco users. There were no significant group differences with regard to age, diagnosed family psychiatric history and level of self-rated stress experienced during 6 months prior to the study. The pre

The mediation of disability by self efficacy in different samples of chronic pain patients.

PURPOSE: A path analytic model conceptualizing self efficacy as a mediator of disability was tested. This model could help explain the circumstances under which disability develops more in some chronic pain patients than in others. METHOD: Questionnaires from 479 chronic pain patients were collected prior to an initial consultative visit with a pain specialist at three pain clinics. These patients represented three separate samples. One sample from a tertiary care hospital (n = 226), one from a community-based clinic (n = 137) and a third sample from combined settings, but excluding patients

Current trends in slot machine gambling: Research and policy issues.

This paper introduces a special issue of theJournal of Gambling Studies on slot machine gambling, and overviews some current trends concentrating on research and policy issues. It is demonstrated that throughout the world, research findings have linked slot machines with pathological gambling. Indeed slot machines are now the predominant form of gambling activity by pathological gamblers treated in self help groups and professional treatment centres in numerous countries. This paper briefly examines the research on slot machines and pathological gambling and then goes on more specifically to e

Tailored Personas for Self-Care in Older Adults With Intrinsic Capacity Decline: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Strengthening self-care is critical to preventing older adults with declining intrinsic capacity (IC) from progressing to disability. However, self-care among older adults with IC decline demonstrates heterogeneity, and standardized interventions often fail to fully meet the needs of this heterogeneous group. This study aimed to examine the self-care characteristics and needs of older adults with IC decline and develop tailored personas. We conducted an explanatory sequential mixed-methods study. The quantitative phase collected numerical data from a sample of 350 community-dwelling older adul
