Chlamydia pecorum-Induced Arthritis in Experimentally and Naturally Infected Sheep.

Chlamydia pecorum is an obligate intracellular pathogen with a wide host range including livestock such as sheep, cattle, goats, and pigs as well as wildlife species such as koalas. Chlamydial polyarthritis is an economically important disease resulting in swollen joints, lameness, stiffness, and weight loss in young sheep. In the present study, tissues from sheep experimentally or naturally infected with Chlamydia pecorum were assessed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry. Carpal, hock, and stifle joints as well as spleen, liver, kidney, lymph nodes, lung, and brain of 35 sheep from dif…

Echinococcus canadensis G8 Tapeworm Infection in a Sheep, China, 2018.

We report a sheep infected with Echinococcus canadensis G8 tapeworm in China in 2018. This pathogen was previously detected in moose, elk, muskox, and mule deer in Europe and North America; our findings suggest a wider host range and geographic distribution. Surveillance for the G8 tapeworm should be conducted in China.

Microscopic alterations in Fasciola hepatica from sheep treated with albendazole.

Currently, albendazole is one of the most commonly used drugs because of its affordability. The objective was to evaluate the histopathology of Fasciola hepatica specimens. For this, the efficacy test was performed on sheep treated with albendazole at the dose recommended for F. hepatica, in which the helminths recovered at necropsy were counted and separated for histology. Spermatogenic cells from parasites recovered from treated and control sheep were examined by microscopy. The fecal egg-count reduction test revealed 97.06% efficacy of albendazole in the treatment of F. hepatica. Changes in…

Prevalence of cerebral toxoplasmosis among slaughtered sheep in Semnan, Iran.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii. Felids are definitive hosts and all warm-blooded animals can be intermediate hosts. Some animals such as sheep, goats and pigs are sensitive to infection. In sheep production systems, toxoplamosis can cause abortion and economic loss. In public health, this disease can be transmitted to humans by the consumption of undercooked infected meat or other organs. In this study, T. gondii DNA was detected by B1 gene amplification in 140 randomly-selected brains of slaughtered sheep in Semnan, Iran. The prevalence of ovine cerebral toxop…

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in sheep from northern China.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important zoonotic parasite causing significant health problems to humans and animals. In recent years, a number of investigations about the seroprevalence of T. gondii in China have been reported, but little is known on the prevalence of toxoplasmosis in sheep in northern China. In the present study, a total of 288 sheep serum samples were collected from Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin and Hebei provinces of northern China for T. gondii antibody survey using a latex agglutination test (LAT). Of these, 87 (30.2%) serum samples were positive for antibodies to T. gond…

Tissue-engineered tendon constructs for rotator cuff repair in sheep.

Current rotator cuff repair commonly involves the use of single or double row suture techniques, and despite successful outcomes, failure rates continue to range from 20 to 95%. Failure to regenerate native biomechanical properties at the enthesis is thought to contribute to failure rates. Thus, the need for technologies that improve structural healing of the enthesis after rotator cuff repair is imperative. To address this issue, our lab has previously demonstrated enthesis regeneration using a tissue-engineered graft approach in a sheep anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair model. We hypot…

Endodontic regeneration and tooth revitalization in immature infected sheep teeth.

AIM: To examine the response of immature sheep teeth with infected root canal systems to a commonly used pulp regeneration/revitalization protocol. METHODOLOGY: Immature mandibular right first incisors in four sheep were mechanically exposed and the pulps infected. The mandibular left first incisors remained intact as controls. Five weeks later, the experimental root canals were chemo-mechanically cleaned and dressed with a triple-antibiotic paste for 4 weeks, before bleeding was induced inside the canal by mechanically irritating the periapical tissues. A collagen dressing was packed coronal…

Venovenous perfusion-induced systemic hyperthermia: five-day sheep survival studies.

OBJECTIVE: Since hyperthermia selectively kills lung cancer cells, we developed a venovenous perfusion-induced systemic hyperthermia system for advanced lung cancer therapy. Our objective was to test the safety and accuracy of our venovenous perfusion-induced systemic hyperthermia system in 5-day sheep survival studies, following Good Laboratory Practice standards. METHODS: Our venovenous perfusion-induced systemic hyperthermia system, which included a double-lumen cannula (Avalon Elite, Rancho Dominguez, Calif), a centrifugal pump (Bio-Pump 560; Medtronic Inc, Minneapolis, Minn), a heat exch…

Intrauterine Candida albicans infection elicits severe inflammation in fetal sheep.

BACKGROUND: Preventing preterm birth and subsequent adverse neonatal sequelae is among the greatest clinical challenges of our time. Recent studies suggest a role for Candida spp. in preterm birth and fetal injury, as a result of their colonization of either the vagina and/or the amniotic cavity. We hypothesized that intraamniotic Candida albicans would cause a vigorous, acute fetal inflammatory response. METHODS: Sheep carrying singleton pregnancies received single intraamniotic injections of either saline (control) or 10(7) colony-forming units C. albicans 1 or 2 d prior to surgical deliver…

Handmade cloned transgenic sheep rich in omega-3 Fatty acids.

Technology of somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) has been adapted worldwide to generate transgenic animals, although the traditional procedure relies largely on instrumental micromanipulation. In this study, we used the modified handmade cloning (HMC) established in cattle and pig to produce transgenic sheep with elevated levels of omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids. Codon-optimized nematode mfat-1 was inserted into a eukaryotic expression vector and was transferred into the genome of primary ovine fibroblast cells from a male Chinese merino sheep. Reverse transcriptase PCR, gas chromatography, and c…

Pathological features of systemic necrotizing vasculitis (polyarteritis nodosa) in sheep.

Polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a systemic vasculitis of unknown aetiology affecting small- and medium-sized arteries of multiple organ systems without involvement of pulmonary arteries. This report describes four cases of PAN in sheep from different flocks. Three of these animals displayed clinical signs of locomotor disturbance. Gross necropsy findings included bilateral nodular thickening of vessels together with thromboses and aneurysms at several locations. Microscopically, small- to medium-sized arteries of the kidneys, ovary, uterus and skin were consistently involved and other locations …

Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii in clinically healthy German sheep flocks.

BACKGROUND: Current epidemiological data on the situation of Coxiella (C.) burnetii infections in sheep are missing, making risk assessment and the implementation of counteractive measures difficult. Using the German state of Thuringia as a model example, the estimated sero-, and antigen prevalence of C. burnetii (10% and 25%, respectively) was assessed at flock level in 39/252 randomly selected clinically healthy sheep flocks with more than 100 ewes and unknown abortion rate. RESULTS: The CHECKIT™ Q-fever Test Kit identified 11 (28%) antibody positive herds, whereas real-time PCR revealed th…

Hydrodynamic ultrasonic sinus floor elevation--an experimental study in sheep.

PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the pressure forces appearing to elevate the sinus membrane by comparing the hydraulic and pneumatic pressure. Also, the relation between the time and volume of the applied liquid and the achieved lift-volume were determined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 190 fresh, half sheep heads were used for the present investigation. An ultrasound surgical device (Piezotome; Acteon, Bordeaux, France) was tested to evaluate the pressure increase at different flow rates. The elevation volume at different flow rates and activation times of the ultra…

Invited review: Current state of genetic improvement in dairy sheep.

Dairy sheep have been farmed traditionally in the Mediterranean basin in southern Europe, central Europe, eastern Europe, and in Near East countries. Currently, dairy sheep farming systems vary from extensive to intensive according to the economic relevance of the production chain and the specific environment and breed. Modern breeding programs were conceived in the 1960s. The most efficient selection scheme for local dairy sheep breeds is based on pyramidal management of the population with the breeders of nucleus flocks at the top, where pedigree and official milk recording, artificial insem…

Glottal airflow resistance in excised pig, sheep, and cow larynges.

This study was to investigate glottal flow resistance in excised pig, sheep, and cow larynges during phonation at different oscillation ranges and to examine the relation of the glottal flow resistance to the laryngeal geometry and vocal fold vibration. Several pig, sheep, and cow larynges were prepared, mounted on an excised larynx bench, and set into oscillation with pressurized, heated, and humidified air. Glottal adduction was controlled by either using two-pronged probes to press the arytenoids together, or by passing a suture to simulate the lateral cricoarytenoid muscle action. Each exc…
