A hard pill to swallow? Parental health shocks and children's mental health.

Based on comprehensive administrative health record data from Austria, this study examines how children's mental health responds to a severe parental health shock. To account for the endogeneity of a serious parental illness, our sample is restricted to children who experience the health shock of a parent at some point in time and we exploit the timing of shocks in a dynamic DID setting. We find a positive causal effect of parental health shocks on children's mental health care utilization. Affected children have higher medical attendance for the treatment of mental illnesses, consume more psy

Prognostic Performance of Shock Index, Whole-Blood Lactate Concentration, Rectal-Interdigital Temperature Gradient, and ATT Score in Cats with Trauma-Induced Shock.

Trauma-induced shock is a frequent and life-threatening complication in feline patients. Early detection of tissue hypoperfusion is fundamental for improving clinical outcomes; however, due to species-specific physiological responses in cats, conventional markers like the shock index often fail to accurately reflect shock severity. This prospective clinical study aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of the shock index for predicting mortality in traumatized cats and to analyze the relationship between clinical outcome and whole-blood lactate concentrations, the rectal-interdigital temperatur

[Pre-clinical management of shock patients].

The preclinical diagnosis of shock is still based on the patient's history, the physical examination, the injury pattern and a few hemodynamic parameters available in the emergency set-up. The clinical picture is characterised by hypotension and tachycardia, tachypnoe and dyspnoea as well as cerebral impairment. Results from recent clinical trials indicate, that a adapted and specific therapeutic approach for the various shock forms is necessary. In case of traumatic hypovolemic-hemorrhagic shock it is of particular relevance if penetrating trauma and/or uncontrolled bleeding exists. Under the

[THE BONE DEFECT HEALING UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF RADIAL EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCK-WAVE THERAPY IN EXPERIMENT].

In experiment on 24 rabbits the processes of reparative osteogenesis in perforated defect of proximal tibial metaphysis under the influence of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy were studied. In accordance to data of clinical, roentgenological and morphological investiagations, conducted in terms 5, 15, 30 and 45 days of observation, there was established, that under the influence of extracorporeal shock-wave therapy in the bone marrow in the traumatic region a vasodilatation, as well as the blood cells exit from capillaries and sinusoid vessels with creation of massive regions of osseous endos

A 10-second fluid challenge guided by transthoracic echocardiography can predict fluid responsiveness.

INTRODUCTION: The accurate assessment of intravascular volume status for the therapy of severe hypovolemia and shock is difficult and critical to critically ill patients. Non-invasive evaluation of fluid responsiveness by the rapid infusion of a very limited amount of volume is an important clinical goal. This study aimed to test whether echocardiographic parameters could predict fluid responsiveness in critically ill patients following a low-volume (50-ml crystalloid solution) infusion over 10 seconds. METHODS: We prospectively studied 55 mechanically ventilated patients. Echocardiography wa

Supraventricular tachycardia in the pediatric trauma patient: a case report.

Any injured patient who is cool and tachycardic is considered to be in shock until proven otherwise.(1) We describe the diagnostic challenge when evaluating persistent tachycardia in the setting of multiple system trauma with hemorrhagic shock. This is a unique case of a 17-year-old patient with the secondary condition of cardiogenic shock due to supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) complicating ongoing hemorrhagic shock from a facial laceration. She had sustained tachycardia despite aggressive resuscitation and required medical cardioversion 30 minutes after arrival to the emergency department.

The effect of lesion volume on cerebral vasomotor tone after focal brain injury and shock.

We have previously shown that the volume of a focal brain injury influences cerebral blood flow. We hypothesized that the cerebral vasomotor tone after traumatic brain injury and shock is related to lesion volume and that the size of the lesion would affect vasomotor reactivity. Swine were randomized to receive either a large or small cryogenic injury followed by shock, and were studied for 5 h postresuscitation. A small brain injury and shock produced a significant and sustained increase in bihemispheric pial arteriolar diameter when compared to the large lesion group and controls. A large br

[Acid hydrolase activity and permeability of lysosomal membranes of cardiomyocytes and hepatocytes in extreme states].

Activity of some lysosomal enzymes was studied in the primary heart cell culture of newborn rats under conditions of hypoxia and in isolated ischemic perfused heart, in liver and heart tissues of dogs after traumatic shock and after experimental myocardium infarction as well as in liver tissue of rats after 10 min experimental heart arrest and during the postresuscitation period. Decrease in cAMP and elevation in cGMP levels, impairment of the adenylate cyclase hormonal regulation, decrease in activity of cAMP-dependent protein kinases were shown to correlate distinctly with an increase of aci

[Acute rhabdomyolysis in the child].

Rhabdomyolysis results from muscular fibre lysis with release of cellular contents (myoglobin, enzymes, electrolytes) into the plasma. Traumatic (crush syndrome) and non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis have been mostly reported in adults. Traumatic rhabdomyolysis are mostly due to ischemic and reperfusion injuries. Non-traumatic rhabdomyolysis include several factors: muscular compression (comas), cytotoxic injury (infections and poisonings), ischemia (shock, cardiorespiratory arrest) or excessive muscular activity (seizures, strenuous exercise). The main etiologies reported in children are: anoxic-i

Thoracic endovascular aortic repair for traumatic and non-traumatic rupture of the descending thoracic aorta: A 15-year single-centre experience.

BACKGROUND: Ruptures of the descending thoracic aorta are life-threatening emergencies with traumatic and non-traumatic causes. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) has become a key treatment, but long-term outcome data remain limited. This study aimed to review our experience with TEVAR in patients with traumatic or non-traumatic rupture and identify factors associated with post-TEVAR survival. METHODS: Between 2001 and 2016, 56 patients (21 with traumatic rupture and 35 with non-traumatic rupture) underwent TEVAR at the West-German Heart and Vascular Center Essen, Germany. Data exami

Successful Embolization of Collaterals from the Round Ligament Artery during Uterine Artery Embolization for Traumatic Uterine Leiomyoma Rupture: A Case Report.

We describe the case of a 48-year-old woman who presented with traumatic rupture of a giant leiomyoma and massive hemoperitoneum caused by slipping and falling in the bathroom. She was in shock on arrival, and resuscitation was performed. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed massive intra-abdominal hematoma and extravasation from the subserous leiomyoma. Uterine artery embolization was performed, but she went into shock again after 6 h. The second contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed persistence of extravasation. During 2nd UAE, an angiogram revealed extravasation originating

[A case of treatment on traumatic pseudoaneurysm of internal carotid artery occurred epistaxis].

We reported a case of traumatic pseudoaneurysm of internal carotid artery accompanied by skull base fracture, for which Guglielmi detachable coil(GDC) embolization surgery was very effective for recovery. A 53-year-old man met a traffic accident and was admitted to our hospital with blindness and epistaxis accompanied with shock. Balloon occlusion test showed a positive sign of traumatic pseudoaneurysm of internal carotid artery, and under the diagnosis GDC embolization surgery was performed on six days after the onset. The patient has completely recovered and keeps his wellness untill now aft
