A controlled, randomised trial comparing single to multiple application lidocaine analgesia in paediatric patients undergoing urethral catheterisation procedures.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate if discomfort levels are statistically significant when two different topical and intraurethral precatheterisation analgesia strategies are used. The primary objective of this research project was to examine methods to decrease pain experienced by paediatric cystogram patients. BACKGROUND: Paediatric patients undergoing urinary catheterisations frequently report discomfort. To alleviate catheterisation discomfort in children, some institutions have either used sedation techniques or topical analgesia strategies. Standardisation of top

The effects of precision intervention based on user profile on the improvement of postpartum parenting behavior for rural‑to‑urban floating women: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rural-to-urban floating women often face great challenges in postpartum parenting, which negatively affects the well-being of these women and their infants. User profiles allow tailored support, making precision interventions possible. Consequently, a randomized controlled trial (RCT) protocol was designed to evaluate the effects of user profile-based precision intervention on improving postpartum parenting behaviors for rural-to-urban floating women. METHODS: This single-blind, three-arm multicenter RCT will enroll 360 mothers. The control group (n = 120) will receive standard po

The effect of a mindfulness-based stress reduction program on stress and quality of life in mothers of children with physical disabilities: A single-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mothers of children with physical disabilities often experience caregiving-related stress that may negatively affect their psychological well-being and quality of life. Mindfulness-based interventions may help reduce stress by improving awareness and emotional regulation. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the effect of a mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) program on parental stress, mindfulness, and quality of life in mothers of children with physical disabilities. METHOD: This single-blind randomized controlled trial included 62 mothers randomly assigned to either t

Impact of school nurse education on factors influencing HPV vaccine communication with parents.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause six cancer types but can be prevented with timely vaccination in early adolescence. However, despite the wide availability of the HPV vaccine, uptake remains suboptimal among US adolescents. School nurses are invaluable resources to students and their families regarding adolescent immunization needs. As part of the All for Them vaccination program, we assessed the impact of the continued nurse education (CNE) intervention on school nurses' HPV vaccine communication with parents. Seventy-two school nurses and nurse administrators in Texas participated in the

Social determinants of youth with mild intellectual disability in outpatient care for mental health disorders: a case-control study.

This study examined the unique role of multiple social determinants of mental health (SDOMH) associated with mental health disorders (MHD) for children with mild intellectual disability (MID), advancing understanding in a fragmented research area. Using a population-based case-control study design, four groups aged 0-17 years (Mage = 10.6, 35.6% female) were studied: children receiving outpatient mental health care for MHD with MID (n = 505) and without MID (n = 2767), each with a matched control group from the general population (n = 2525 and n = 13,835, respectively). Through multivariate lo

Environmental Predictors of Within-Person Changes in Callous-Unemotional Traits among Justice-Involved Male Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Youth who display elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits are at risk for negative developmental outcomes. Previous studies demonstrate that environmental conditions contribute to elevated levels of CU traits, but the majority of this work focuses on a single source of environmental influence. To better understand how environmental conditions contribute to changes in CU traits during adolescence, the current study examined the time-varying relation between CU traits, parent, peer, and community conditions. METHOD: Using data from the longitudinal Pathways to Desistance study (N =

Do chromosomal inversion carriers really need preimplantation genetic testing?

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the rates of euploidy, aneuploidy, and mosaicism in preimplantation genetic testing for structural rearrangements (PGT-SR) cycles from chromosomal inversion carriers. In addition, this work also focused on assessing the impact of some contributors on the incidence of parental originating aneuploidy and mosaicism. METHODS: This retrospective review enrolled chromosomal inversion carrier couples of whom the females were under 38 years old undergoing PGT-SR at a single academic reproductive center. Subgroups were divided according to the gender of carriers,

A pilot feasibility and acceptability study of an Internet-delivered psychosocial intervention to reduce postoperative pain in adolescents undergoing spinal fusion.

BACKGROUND: Spinal fusion surgery is a common and painful musculoskeletal surgery performed in the adolescent population. Despite the known risk for developing chronic postsurgical pain, few perioperative psychosocial interventions have been evaluated in this population, and none have been delivered remotely (via the Internet) to improve accessibility. AIMS: The aim of this single-arm pilot study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the first Internet-based psychological intervention delivered during the perioperative period to adolescents undergoing major spinal fusion surger

Reasons for admission and variance of body weight at referral in female inpatients with anorexia nervosa in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) at hospital admission in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) represents a prognostic marker for mortality, chronicity and future body weight. The current study focused on the associations between BMI standard deviation score (BMI-SDS) at admission and reasons for seeking inpatient treatment. Further interest was given to the relationship between premorbid weight and weight at admission, as well as the effect of both weight at referral and reasons for admission on treatment outcome. METHODS: Data ascertained in the German Register of Children and Adolescents w

Clinical significance of family accommodation and parental psychological distress in a sample of children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder aged 8-17 years old.

BACKGROUND: Family Accommodation (FA) refers to the involvement of family members (especially parents) in the compulsive behaviors of childr … obal, social and role functioning but also a high level of individual psychological distress in the single parent. The presence of FA should therefore be carefully investigated and considered in planning assessment and treatment of OCD in children and adolescents.

In South Africa, deat … mpact on material need, including access to food, clothing and essential services, whilst loss of a single parent seems to have a more variable impact. At present, there are very few child headed households, but this constitutes a risk in the longer term. CONCLUSIONS: Orphans appear to be more vulnerable in terms of material need. Scales, diagnoses, and child psychopathology: I. CBCL and DISC relationships.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the relationship between scales and structured diagnostic interview diagnoses, the authors used a two-stage screening method to study 201 military families with one or more children ages 5 to 17. METHOD: Parents and children were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC 2.1); parents also completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) while the children completed other self-report symptom scales. RESULTS: Results indicate only a modest ability of scales to discriminate among discrete DISC-derived DSM-III-R diagnoses. Inclusion of diagnostic i

Social and environmental factors influencing contraceptive use among black adolescents.

In 1979 survey among sexually active unmarried black adolescents from Chicago found that 28 percent of the young women and 18 percent of the young men used a contraceptive at first intercourse. Statistically significant differences in such contraceptive use among teenage women were found for three social and environmental characteristics: social class, parents' marital status and neighborhood quality. Thus, 41 percent of the young women from the highest social class used contraceptives at first intercourse, but only 17 percent of those from the lowest class did so. The proportions were 35 perc

Faith, family, and stigma after parental divorce: psychological well-being among Indonesian Muslim adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND: Parental divorce can disrupt adolescents' identity, security, and belonging. In Muslim-majority Indonesia, divorce is also interpreted through cultural expectations of family unity, filial respect, family reputation, and religious meaning. These meanings may intensify stigma, but they may also provide adolescents with moral language for patience, hope, and self-restraint. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how Indonesian Muslim adolescent girls make sense of psychological well-being after parental divorce, with attention to Islamic cultural meanings, family relationships, stigma, and

The effect on women's health of extending parental leave: a quasi-experimental registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Parental leave policies have been hypothesized to benefit mothers' mental health. We assessed the impact of a 6-week extension of parental leave in Denmark on maternal mental health. METHODS: We linked individual-level data from Danish national registries on maternal sociodemographic characteristics and psychiatric diagnoses. A regression discontinuity design was applied to study the increase in parental leave duration after 26 March 1984. We included women who had given birth between 1 January 1981 and 31 December 1987. Our outcome was a first psychiatric diagnosis following the

Improving mealtimes for paediatric intensive care children and families: A quality improvement initiative.

BACKGROUND: Many critically ill children can be fed orally at some point during their paediatric intensive care (PICU) stay, but reduced appetite and other factors may impact their intake. At home, oral feeding is usually delivered by parents, so involving parents more actively during mealtimes in the PICU may contribute to improved patient/family satisfaction. AIM: To assess the impact of a new "room service" initiative involving parents on mealtime quality and on both family and health care professional (HCP) satisfaction. METHODS: A prospective, single-centre, before-and-after interventio

"Will they be good enough parents?": Ethical dilemmas, views, and decisions among assisted reproductive technology (ART) providers.

BACKGROUND: Many adults may make less-than-ideal parents, but important ethical questions arise concerning whether assisted reproductive technology (ART) providers should thus ever refuse treatment to certain patients, and if so, when, and how to decide. METHODS: In-depth interviews of approximately 1 hour each were conducted with 27 ART providers (17 physicians, and 10 other health providers). RESULTS: Clinicians often struggle with whether to attempt to assess and predict patients' potential future parenting abilities, and if so, how, and how to proceed if doubts arise. Providers face prof
