An observational study of the association between sleep disturbance, fatigue and cognition in the post-acute period after mild traumatic brain injury in prospectively studied premorbidly healthy adults.

The literature examining the relationship between sleep disturbance, fatigue, and cognition in premorbidly healthy civilian adults after mTBI is very limited. The current study aimed to investigate the relationships of sleep disturbance and fatigue with cognition while controlling for psychological distress and age. Using a prospective observational design, we assessed 60 premorbidly healthy individuals approximately 8 weeks after mTBI. Participants were assessed with the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory as well as measures of speed of information proce

Adverse Events Associated with Melatonin for the Treatment of Primary or Secondary Sleep Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Melatonin is widely available either on prescription for the treatment of sleep disorders or as an over-the-counter dietary supplement. Melatonin has also recently been licensed in the UK for the short-term treatment of jetlag. Little is known about the potential for adverse events (AEs), in particular AEs resulting from long-term use. Concern has been raised over the possible risks of exposure in certain populations including pre-adolescent children and patients with epilepsy or asthma. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the evidence for AEs associated wi

Sleep disturbances in fibromyalgia: A meta-analysis of case-control studies.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are common in fibromyalgia, but the features of sleep disturbances are not well understood. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies to compare the sleep outcomes of individuals with fibromyalgia and healthy controls. METHODS: We systematically searched eight databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Airiti Library and Wanfang Data) for articles published before April 2016. RESULTS: Twenty-five case-controlled studies and a total of 2086 participants were included in the meta-analysis. Sleep was

Tension-type headache and sleep.

This review describes empirical evidence for a bidirectional relationship between tension-type headache (TTH) and sleep. In its most severe form, chronic TTH (CTTH) affects 2-3 % of the population and can be very disabling. Sleep dysregulation triggers episodic TTH, and sleep disorders may complicate and exacerbate headache. The majority of CTTH sufferers also have insomnia, and longitudinal data suggest that insomnia is a risk factor for new-onset TTH. Similarly, observational studies suggest that sleep disturbance is a risk factor for new-onset TTH and for progression from episodic to chroni

Beyond the mean: A systematic review on the correlates of daily intraindividual variability of sleep/wake patterns.

Features of an individual's sleep/wake patterns across multiple days are governed by two dimensions, the mean and the intraindividual variability (IIV). The existing literature focuses on the means, while the nature and correlates of sleep/wake IIV are not well understood. A systematic search of records in five major databases from inception to November 2014 identified 53 peer-reviewed empirical publications that examined correlates of sleep/wake IIV in adults. Overall, this literature appeared unsystematic and post hoc, with under-developed theoretical frameworks and inconsistent methodologie

Sleep Disturbances in Children with Attentional Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Specific Learning Disorders.

Sleep disturbances may be a significant source of distress for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, and consequently also for their families. Crucially, sleep disturbances might be influenced by comorbidity. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and specific learning disorder (SLD) often co-occur, and consequently, investigating sleep disturbances in children with comorbidity of ADHD and SLD is essential. Our study aimed at detecting sleep difficulties in a group of 74 children with ADHD, 78 children with SLD, and 76 children with ADHD and SLD by using the Sleep Disturbances S

Evaluation of depressive symptoms and sleep alterations in college students.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that sleep alterations could favor subsequent depression development. In order to identify the simultaneous occurrence of these parameters in young people, in this work we evaluated the prevalence of depressive symptoms, sleep habits, and possible sleep disturbances in college students. METHODS: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and a Sleep Habits Questionnaire were applied to students registered at the Autonomous University of Yucatan, Merida (mean age 20.2 +/- 2.6 years). The final sample was composed of 340 (53%) women

Fiat Lux: The Light Became Therapy. An Overview on the Bright Light Therapy in Alzheimer's Disease Sleep Disorders.

BACKGROUND: A system of photosensitive retinal ganglion cells provides 'non-visual' information on the circadian sequences of light to the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which, as the 'master clock', synchronizes the chronobiological mechanisms of all the biological clocks. Damage to SCN structure alters circadian behavioral and hormonal rhythms and interferes with a regular sleep-wake pattern. Several studies have shown that, in aging and in Alzheimer's disease (AD), circadian rhythms change their synchronization with the environment and behavior loses sync with light. OBJECTIVE: The current

Sleep Disorders in Hereditary Ataxias.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this review, we aim to describe the main sleep disorders observed in patients with different forms of hereditary ataxias and discuss the main pathophysiological mechanisms. RECENT FINDINGS: Several pathological studies have demonstrated that the degenerative process in patients with hereditary ataxias may involve not only the cerebellum, but also other areas of the nervous system, and explain noncerebellar symptoms, such as sleep disorders. Hereditary ataxias are neurodegenerative disorders with heterogeneous genetic and clinical presentation. This group of diseases usua

Sleep fragmentation intensifies sleep architecture disruption and fatigue after traumatic brain injury.

Sleep/wake disturbances (SWDs) are common following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can have deleterious impacts on recovery. Regulation of the time spent in non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREMS) and rapid eye movement sleep (REMS) is a complex process that is influenced by both biological and environmental factors. We hypothesize that extrinsic factors such as environmental stimuli amplify SWDs after brain injury. Here, we examine the acute, sub-acute, and chronic effects of TBI with and without mechanical sleep fragmentation (SF) on sleep/wake time-in-state and architecture in established mo

Sleep hygiene and its relation to sleep in adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with ADHD often experience sleep problems that exacerbate functional impairment. Sleep hygiene may be particularly challenging in this group. To better understand sleep hygiene practices and their relation to sleep problems in this group, this study compares sleep hygiene across adolescents with ADHD without sleep problems (ADHD-), adolescents with ADHD and co-occurring sleep problems (ADHD+), and non-ADHD peers (NT), and examines group differences in the associations between sleep hygiene and sleep parameters using objective (actigraphy) and subjective (sleep diaries) a

The Role of Essential Oils on Sleep Quality and Other Sleep-related Issues: Evidence from Clinical Trials.

Essential oils (EOs) are a volatile mixture of bioactive compounds extracted from aromatic plants. The composition of EOs varies, which majorly depends on the extraction methods and plant parts. Aromatherapy using EOs has been reported for its several beneficial effects in humans. Aromatherapy is considered a complementary and/ or adjuvant therapeutic approach for treating several illnesses, especially to improve mental health and well-being. The incidence of sleep disorders, specifically insomnia, is nowadays increased, possibly due to urbanization and lifestyle. The studies showed that EOs-b

A prospective case-control study of excessive fragmentary myoclonus in the upper and lower extremities: Clinical characteristics and electrophysiological correlates.

BACKGROUND: Excessive fragmentary myoclonus (EFM) is an incidental finding in video-polysomnography (VPSG) and listed among "Sleep Related Movement Disorders - Isolated symptoms and normal variants" in the ICSD-3. We aimed to prospectively evaluate EFM in the upper and lower extremities in a large sleep laboratory cohort and to investigate clinical characteristics and peripheral nerve pathology in patients with and without EFM. METHODS: Two-hundred consecutive sleep laboratory patients with EFM according to ICSD-3 criteria were included and matched to 100 patients without EFM for age, sex and

Review: Identification and Management of Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders as a Transdiagnostic Feature in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances are highly frequent features in a range of child and adolescent psychiatric conditions. However, it is commonly not clear if such sleep problems represent symptomatic features of, comorbidities of, or risk factors for these conditions. It is believed that underlying dysfunction in the daily biological (circadian) clock may play important roles in the etiology of many sleep disorders, and circadian rhythm changes are reported in a number of neuropsychiatric conditions. The aim of this review was to explore the key identifying features of circadian rhythm disorders

Automatic sleep staging: from young adults to elderly patients using multi-class support vector machine.

Aging is a process that is inevitable, and makes our body vulnerable to age-related diseases. Age is the most consistent factor affecting the sleep structure. Therefore, new automatic sleep staging methods, to be used in both of young and elderly patients, are needed. This study proposes an automatic sleep stage detector, which can separate wakefulness, rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and non-REM (NREM) sleep using only EEG and EOG. Most sleep events, which define the sleep stages, are reduced with age. This is addressed by focusing on the amplitude of the clinical EEG bands, and not the affect

Sex differences in the effect of subjective sleep on fear conditioning, extinction learning, and extinction recall in individuals with a range of PTSD symptom severity.

Sleep has been found to play a key role in fear conditioning, extinction learning and extinction recall, and sleep disturbances are linked to many mental disorders including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Previous studies examining associations between sleep and fear or extinction processes primarily focused on objectively measured sleep architecture. Little research has so far focused on subjective sleep measures and particularly in clinical populations, which often experience subjectively poor sleep, including PTSD. Here we investigated whether subjective sleep disturbance, sleep ons
