Angioleiomyoma of the oral cavity extended to submandibular space; an unusual tumor in an unusual deep-seated space: a case report.

Angioleiomyoma (AL) is a benign neoplasia originating from smooth muscle and very uncommon in the oral cavity. The most frequent subtype in the oral cavity is the vascular one. AL usually occurs in the extremities: only around 12% are found in other areas such as head and neck. It presents as an asymptomatic, slow growing nodule lodging in the palate, tongue or lips. The diagnosis is essentially by histological exam and special specific stains are helpful to confirm the origin and to distinguish it from other tumors. We present a case of AL found in unusual site: attached to the submandibular

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma.

Pulmonary metastases from benign-appearing smooth muscle tumors of the uterus are rare, and are termed benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML). Affected patients usually present with single or multiple lung nodules and are usually women who have undergone hysterectomy. Only a few cases of BML with lung cysts have been reported, with 2 patients presenting with spontaneous pneumothoraces. We report a case of BML in a 29-year-old woman with an abnormal preoperative chest radiograph who several years after hysterectomy developed spontaneous bilateral pneumothoraces.

[Sinonasal-type hemangiopericytoma].

Sinonasal-type hemangiopericytomas are rare tumors believed to derive from perivascular modified smooth muscle cells. They have a predilection for the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, where they grow as polypoid masses. Affected patients experience epistaxis, nasal obstruction, sinusitis and bone erosion along with a wide array of other nonspecific findings. The overall excellent survival is achieved with complete surgical excision. Up to 30% of the cases develop recurrence, often many years after initial surgery. Malignant behavior is uncommon. A case of a 59 year old woman is presented.

Myxoid leiomyoma of the vulva: a case report.

A case of myxoid leiomyoma of the vulva in a 29-year-old pregnant woman was encountered. The leiomyoma was a well-circumscribed solitary mass measuring 4 x 4 x 4.5 cm and, microscopically, composed of spindle-shaped cells and an abundant matrix characterized by a myxoid change. These spindle-shaped cells were arranged in a plexiform pattern. The cytological findings on the aspiration biopsy and the histological features were well correlated. Review of the reported smooth muscle tumors of vulval origin indicates that the myxoid change occurs invariably in younger women and, in some cases, assoc…

Clinicopathologic and recurrence characteristics of leiomyoma with bizarre nuclei, which is rare type of uterine smooth macule tumors.

OBJECTIVES: LBN is a rare variant of uterine smooth muscle tumors. Although LBN is a benign variant of leiomyoma, recurrent cases have been reported. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the clinicopathological features of LBN cases and to define the characteristics of recurrent cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-six cases with LBN identified in the final pathology were included in the study. The patients' physical examination findings, imaging reports, postoperative complications, and medical data related to recurrence, metastasis, disease-free survival, and overall survival after LBN diagno…

Aberrant expression of Cyr61, a member of the CCN (CTGF/Cyr61/Cef10/NOVH) family, and dysregulation by 17 beta-estradiol and basic fibroblast growth factor in human uterine leiomyomas.

Uterine leiomyomas are the most common tumors of the reproductive tract, afflicting women between the ages of 30--55 yr. Although considered to be the leading cause of hysterectomies in the United States, little is known of the etiology and mechanisms of pathogenesis in leiomyomas. Accordingly, rapid analysis of differential expression (RADE) was employed to identify genes that are abnormally expressed in leiomyomas. Of the several genes identified, Cyr61, a member of the CCN family of growth and angiogenic regulators, was shown to be markedly down-regulated at the messenger ribonucleic acid (

Conventional renal cell carcinoma with renal capsular leiomyoma: a diagnostic dilemma.

Primary renal leiomyomas are very rare benign tumors of the kidney, arising from smooth muscle cells of the renal capsule, pelvis or blood vessels. Simultaneous occurrence of a leiomyoma with conventional renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the same kidney is an extremely rare incidence. Herein we describe a case, which to the best of our knowledge is the second reported case in the English literature. This 70-year-old female presented in surgical out-patient department with the complaints of hematuria and abdominal pain. Subsequently, on computed tomography a multifocal mass was noted in the right

Unilateral primary ovarian leiomyoma masqueraded as ovarian fibroma: A histopathological diagnosis.

Leiomyoma is the commonest benign mesenchymal tumor of the uterus, which can be developed at any site where smooth muscle cells are found. The broad ligament is the most common and ovary is one of the rarest extrauterine sites, accounting for 0.5-1% of all benign ovarian tumors. Herein, we report a case of ovarian leiomyoma in a perimenopausal female, clinically presented with heavy menstrual bleed, radiologically diagnosed as subserosal uterine fibroid. Intraoperatively, it was considered as ovarian fibroma but finally diagnosed as ovarian leiomyoma on histomorphology, which was confirmed on

Agressive inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the liver with underlying schistosomiasis: a case report.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) occurs infrequently in the liver. It is controversial whether it represents a low grade mesenchymal neoplasm or a reactive inflammatory lesion. Local recurrence and metastasis are rare and some tumors are associated with infectious agents. We report on a case of a large and partially resected IMT with local recurrence and diaphragm and kidney infiltration detected on routine surveillance two years later. Histologically, the tumor showed spindle cells without atypia, mitosis or necrotic areas in a myxoid and collagenized background with inflammatory cell

Hemangiopericytoma of the infratemporal fossa: progression toward malignancy in a 30-year history.

Hemangiopericytoma is a rare vascular tumor first described by Stout and Murray in 1942 and characterized by a proliferation of Zimmermann's pericytes, smooth muscle cells arranged around blood vessels. This tumor presents as a slowly enlarging painless mass. Diagnosis with certainty is often a difficult one because of the close likeness with other spindle cell tumors; it requires the help of immunohistochemical techniques and sometimes ultrastructural techniques. Only 15% of hemangiopericytomas are localized in the cervicofacial region; in particular, occurrence in the infratemporal fossa is

Peritoneal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus macrourus).

An 8-yr-old, male brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus macrourus) presented for necropsy examination in good nutritional status. It had received treatment for Strongylus spp. infection 1 yr earlier, and it had a short episode of diarrhea 2 days before death. Postmortem examination revealed disseminated, variably discrete, soft to firm, white-gray nodules over the omentum, mesentery, intestinal serosa, and at the liver surface. Histologically, these tumors were mainly arranged as proliferating spindle cells growing in interlacing fascicles or in a storiform pattern associated with ropy collagenous

Case Report: A dual challenge: navigating cardiac leiomyosarcoma and benign pulmonary mass.

Leiomyosarcoma is frequently found in the retroperitoneum, mesentery, omentum, uterus, or subcutaneous tissue. However, primary cardiac leiomyosarcoma is rare and even more uncommon is its coexistence with a benign tumor. We report a case involving a 61-year-old female with a right ventricular outflow tract leiomyosarcoma in conjunction with a benign mass located in the main pulmonary artery. Echocardiography revealed a 2.5 × 2.2 cm isoechoic mass in the right ventricular outflow tract and a 3.8 × 1.8 cm irregular isoechoic mass in the main pulmonary artery. Computed tomography angiography (CT

Pancreatic PEComa: Case Report of an Extremely Rare Tumor.

Pancreatic perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms with only a few reported cases. Their non-specific clinical presentations and imaging features often lead to misdiagnosis. We report a case of a 63-year-old female with intermittent left upper quadrant pain. Imaging revealed a hypervascular mass in the pancreatic tail, initially suspected to be a neuroendocrine tumor. The patient underwent distal pancreatectomy with splenectomy. Histopathological examination showed that the tumor consisted of epithelioid and spindle cells with clear cytoplasm, a rich vascu

Immature Chondroid Choristoma: Clinicopathologic, Immunohistochemical, and Molecular Study of an Unusual Benign Skin Tumor.

An unusual benign skin tumor is reported occurring in a 68-year-old woman with no significant medical history. The lesion presented as a small skin nodule in the neck. Histologic examination showed a well-circumscribed superficial dermal nodule composed of a solid proliferation of large, round cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and small centrally placed nuclei displaying a vaguely chondroid appearance. Immunohistochemical studies showed strong positivity of the tumor cells for S100 protein and vimentin and negative staining for SOX10, melanoma cocktail, HMB45, Melan-A, cytokeratin AE1

Intranodal leiomyoma in a young child: report of a rare spindle cell lesion.

ABSTRACT Primary spindle cell lesions of lymph nodes, with the exception of Kaposi's sarcoma, are rare. Intranodal palisaded myofibroblastoma has been described as a spindle cell tumor with prominent amianthoid fibers, intralesional hemorrhage, and intracellular or extracellular inclusions. Another spindle cell lesion, intranodal leiomyoma, has been reported only occasionally. We report the case of a 6-year-old boy with a mass in the neck without other systemic complaints. Excision biopsy of the lymph node revealed a spindle cell tumor with lymph nodal tissue at the periphery. The tumor showed

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer: update on clinical and molecular characteristics.

Hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell cancer (HLRCC, also known as multiple cutaneous and uterine leiomyomatosis, MCUL) is a highly penetrant autosomal dominant tumor predisposition syndrome characterized by benign leiomyomas of the skin and the uterus. Renal cell carcinomas, occurring in a subset of the HLRCC families, are exceptionally aggressive. Therefore careful, frequent surveillance strategies are recommended. Association of malignant smooth-muscle tumors, leiomyosarcomas, with HLRCC has been observed but the risk appears to be smaller than initially estimated. To date inactivating h

Angiomyofibroblastoma of the spermatic cord: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Angiomyofibroblastoma is a benign soft tissue tumor with tendency to arise in the vulva. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 36-year-old Greek Caucasian man presenting with a left inguinal painless mass. This is the second case of angiomyofibroblastoma of the spermatic cord. At operation, a 4.5 cm well-circumscribed solid tumor was found adherent to the spermatic cord. The tumor consisted of spindle-shaped cells proliferating in short fascicles between numerous medium-sized blood vessels with thin and hyalinized walls. Neoplastic cells had eosinophilic cytoplasm with neither mitotic
