Drug use and health behaviour among German men who have sex with men: Results of a qualitative, multi-centre study.

BACKGROUND: Men who have sex with men (MSM) are a risk group for new HIV infections. Drug use among men who have sex with men is often accompanied by risky sexual behaviours. Local AIDS help centres and gay advice centres are recording an increase in drug use among MSM clients in Germany. This study examines reasons for drug use and drug use contexts for MSM, including syndemic factors and experiences of social support. METHODS: The study is based on a qualitative research approach. We conducted 14 structured, in-depth interviews with substance-using MSM in three German cities. An interview g

Between hope and harm: Digital coping during the anticipatory phase of violent loss.

Violent loss poses profound psychological challenges when families endure uncertainty before death is confirmed. This study extends coping theory into the digital realm by examining how coping unfolds through online networks during the anticipatory phase of bereavement following the Nova Festival massacre in Israel. Grounded in a social constructionist approach, in-depth interviews with bereaved family members, partners, and friends explored digital coping during the two weeks of uncertainty after the attack. Findings reveal a complex matrix of individual and collective digital coping strategi

"The cancer bond": exploring the formation of cancer risk perception in families with Lynch syndrome.

This study explores the social context of hereditary cancer risk perception in three families, an African-American family, a Mexican-American family, and a Caucasian family, each with Lynch Syndrome documented by a mismatch repair gene mutation. Communication network assessments measured family communication about cancer experiences and genetic testing information among a total of 26 participants. Participant narratives were evaluated to gain insight into how family cancer experiences and genetic testing information have shaped perceptions of cancer risk. Analysis of communication networks ind

The community epidemiology work group approach.

"Drug abuse" provides many unique challenges to the research community. Some of these involve fundamental epidemiologic issues, such as measuring the extent of the problem, identifying and assessing changes in patterns and trends, detecting emerging "drugs of abuse", characterizing vulnerable populations and determining health and social consequences. A number of research methods are employed to address these issues. This paper describes one of these--a model in which ongoing surveillance of "drug abuse" is maintained through a network of community-based researchers, local officials, academics

Gambling as Work: A Study of German Poker Players.

The study addresses the question whether professional gamblers can be considered an occupational group from a sociological perspective. It combines survey data on poker players from the German state North Rhine-Westphalia with sociological theory in order to explain the oxymoron of professional gambling. The descriptive analysis of the survey data is supplemented by ego-centric network data of the poker players to analyze whether hobby and professional players maintain different forms of social relationships. Even when semiprofessionals and professional players are grouped together for the pur

Exploring the lived experiences of adolescent mothers in Burera and Nyarugenge districts, Rwanda: a phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy remains a major public health concern globally, with approximately 21 million girls aged 15-19 becoming pregnant each year. Sub-Saharan Africa bears a disproportionate burden due to structural, social, and health-system challenges. In Rwanda, 8% of girls aged 15-19 have experienced pregnancy. Despite national policies aimed at improving sexual and reproductive health services, limited evidence exists on the lived experiences of adolescent mothers in different community contexts in Rwanda. This study explored the experiences, coping strategies, and support syste
