Motivations for Polysubstance Use with Methamphetamine and Opioids Among People Who Use Drugs in Seattle, WA: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: The United States has seen a remarkable increase in the use of both methamphetamine and opioids, used concurrently or simultaneously. This trend has been particularly marked in urban centers on the West Coast. The motivation for co-use among people who use drugs in this important region is not yet clear. METHODS: We conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with people who regularly used both methamphetamine and opioids recruited from a syringe services program in downtown Seattle. In addition, SSP staff participated in a focus group discussion (FGD) to share experiences and p

Social and economic marginalization in the context of a public health emergency: HIV care disruptions experienced by black sexual minority men (BSMM).

BACKGROUND: HIV in the United States disproportionately affects Black sexual minority men (BSMM), including disparities in HIV care engagement and outcomes. During public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, marginalized populations such as BSMM may face additional barriers to HIV care engagement. METHODS: We examined associations between HIV care engagement (current antiretroviral therapy use, healthcare visits for HIV, viral load testing, viral load suppression) and experiencing COVID-19-related disruptions to HIV care in a sample of BSMM living with HIV in 2022 (n = 172). We

Drug-Related Deaths Among Young People in a Scottish Region: A Socio-Ecological Autopsy Approach to Understanding the Context of Drug Deaths.

AIMS: Social, structural and systemic factors are critical to understanding drug-related deaths among adults. The relevance of these factors to young people is not known. This study explores the life experience, drug using histories and the interactions of a group of young people with agencies and services prior to their death. Our approach seeks to look beyond the immediate cause of death and identify broader contextual factors that may have contributed to a death through a "whole-life view". METHODS: The study developed a socio-ecological autopsy approach informed by social autopsy methods

Facial first impressions and partner preference models: Comparable or distinct underlying structures?

Given the frequency of relationships nowadays initiated online, where impressions from face photographs may influence relationship initiation, it is important to understand how facial first impressions might be used in such contexts. We therefore examined the applicability of a leading model of verbally expressed partner preferences to impressions derived from real face images and investigated how the factor structure of first impressions based on potential partner preference-related traits might relate to a more general model of facial first impressions. Participants rated 1,000 everyday face

TOWARD A CRIMINOLOGY OF INMATE NETWORKS.

The mid-twentieth century witnessed a surge of American prison ethnographies focused on inmate society and the social structures that guide inmate life. Ironically, this literature virtually froze in the 1980s just as the country entered a period of unprecedented prison expansion, and has only recently begun to thaw. In this manuscript, we develop a rationale for returning inmate society to the forefront of criminological inquiry, and suggest that network science provides an ideal framework for achieving this end. In so doing, we show that a network perspective extends prison ethnographies by …

Developmental dyslexia.

This review uses a levels-of-analysis framework to summarize the current understanding of developmental dyslexia's etiology, brain bases, neuropsychology, and social context. Dyslexia is caused by multiple genetic and environmental risk factors as well as their interplay. Several candidate genes have been identified in the past decade. At the brain level, dyslexia is associated with aberrant structure and function, particularly in left hemisphere reading/language networks. The neurocognitive influences on dyslexia are also multifactorial and involve phonological processing deficits as well as

Suicide to harass others: clues from mythology to understanding suicide bombing attacks.

Suicide by revenge, the Samsonic suicide, and the suicide by devotio, all described in classical mythology and also reported in the ethnographic literature, belong to the same class of suicidal behaviors as kamikaze suicide and the suicide bombing attack: suicide to harass and burden others or suicide with a hostile intent. The lack of a social dimension to share in a positive manner may lead an individual to integrate him/herself in another social structure, e.g., a military organization, which allows the individual to express his/her desires and personal identity only by destroying others an…

Social support sources for people with palliative care needs at home: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Recent literature suggests an increase in attention for the social dimension of palliative care. However, who provides social support to patients with palliative care needs at home and their relatives is often unclear, and insight in the role of the community and professionals with a main focus on social support, not being health care professionals, is lacking in this respect. Therefore, in this study we explore social support for people with palliative care needs residing at home and their relatives, provided by the community and professionals from the welfare domain, and want to

Pushing the boundary of child well-being: A spatial examination of child mortality in transition zones of extreme economic inequality and material hardship.

How do patterns of socioeconomic inequality shape the risk of child fatality in urban areas? Research has shown that both intentional and unintentional child deaths are concentrated in areas of social disadvantage. Yet in densely populated cities, child fatality risk may not follow smooth spatial patterns and instead exhibit abrupt shifts across neighborhood boundaries. This study applies a dissimilarity-based Bayesian spatial conditional autoregressive (CAR) model to detect localized discontinuities in child mortality risk associated with structural inequality. Using a continuous dissimilarit

A cross-sectional study of health and well-being among newly settled refugee migrants in Sweden-The role of health literacy, social support and self-efficacy.

Structural barriers such as inadequate housing, lack of employment opportunities, and discrimination are known to adversely affect the health of newly settled refugee migrants. However, these barriers remain largely unresolved and unaddressed. Thus, there is a need to better understand how other factors, such as individual-level health resources, may influence health and mitigate ill health in the early post-migration phase. In this study, we aimed to explore the relationship between health outcomes and individual health resources including health literacy, social support, and self-efficacy in

The architecture of quality of life after stroke: a network comparison of mild-to-moderate versus severe functional impairment.

BACKGROUND: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after stroke is multidimensional, yet conventional analyses often overlook the complex interactions among its domains and how these might differ by functional status. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to model and compare the network architecture of HRQoL between stroke survivors with mild-to-moderate versus severe functional dependence. METHODS: In this multi-center cross-sectional study, 451 inpatients were assessed using the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life (SS-QOL) scale across 12 domains. Participants were stratified into a Mild-Moderate group

Disentangling the configurational drivers of nursing science popularization: a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis using WeChat data.

BACKGROUND: Effective communication of nursing science through social media platforms represents a critical strategy for bridging the gap between professional nursing knowledge and public health needs. However, empirical research on nursing science popularization through international social media platforms remains limited, with existing studies often focusing on single determining factors without examining their complex interactions. METHODS: This study employed fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to identify configurational pathways that drive effective communication of nursin
