The co-existence of horseshoe kidney (HSK) and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is rare and demands a special diagnostic workup and a meticulous surgical procedure. Ten patients with HSK associated with AAA are reported. All underwent aortic replacement with successful preservation of multiple renal arteries. One patient died at the 7th postoperative day from myocardial infarction. HSK does not represent a contraindication for aortic repair. The technical adaptation of the Impulse-Oscillometry (IOS) to different conditions of measurement allows a wide range of applications so that even questions of peripheral user groups using lung function tests can be answered. Thus, the variable connection of the IOS head via fold hose opens the field of bedside measurements and additional applications in pediatrics, intensive care and veterinary medicine. Rhinomanometric examinations are possible with little expenditure and high practicability using nasal tips.

OBJECTIVE: To present epidemiologic data on the relatively rare malformation choanal atresia, based on a large collection of material and with special stress on the significance of the so-called CHARGE (coloboma, heart defect, choanal atresia, retarded growth and development, genital anomaly, and ear defect with deafness) association.

Besides the treatment of postoperative pain, working together with the anaesthesiologist, orthopaedic doctors are mostly involved in diseases of the locomotor system where pain is a leading feature. Painful orthopaedic diseases are very frequent. They afford a special diagnostic procedure. The pain treatment consists of special orthopaedic therapy and local injections with low doses of local anaesthetics and steroids at the site of pain. This treatment helps to avoid the use of high-dose systemic analgesics and perhaps avoids the need for operations.

The authors report a case of the rare occurrence of congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (Ondine's curse) and long segmental colonic aganglionosis (Hirschsprung's disease). A review of 24 reported cases showed that the proportion of females having this concurrence is higher than for ordinary Hirschsprung's disease. It also appears that the aganglionic segment is much longer in these cases than in ordinary Hirschsprung's disease.

This study presents six patients with hypothalamic hamartomas diagnosed on the basis of magnetic resonance imaging. Histological confirmation was performed in three patients who underwent surgery. For women with PKU, elevated maternal blood levels of phenylalanine even at conception can lead to fetal damage. The initial experience of a specialized management team organized to provide expedient care for all acute major gastrointestinal bleeding in protocolized fashion at a large referral center is presented.
